Congratulations to Miami University Redhawks for winning the 2010 Regular Season CCHA Championship!

What a great game. BGSU played one heck of a game! Miami played pretty well, but not up to our standards, IMO. Hammond played his rear end off and was only slightly outplayed by Riechard.

Can't wait for tomorrow....can't lose focus on prep for the CCHA Tournament.

Way to go boys, 2009-10 CCHA champs. Completely dismantled the conference this season, 21 game unbeaten streak, no regulation losses in 23 games. Wow.

One down, two more championships to go. Lets not lose focus and stay on a roll heading into March/April.

IHF - I am considering posting a poll for Miami fans only on whether to initiate you into the group, since we all seem to agree that you make some absolutely great points. lol.

I guess the thing that annoys me the most with PW's column (and it isn't as if she's the only one) is that it seemed to me that she read something into Bucci's article that wasn't there. Could he have used another word? Perhaps.

But I think IHF said it perhaps the best:

Brendan seemed like the kind of person that probably found a reason to LIKE someone. It seemed like those around him felt the same way about him. Isn't that the most important message of all?

Agreed. She even boasts to some degree each week about those that love to hate her. That's not really the goal here, but rather, impartial reporting that props up, and reports upon, the teams in the league. That her unyielding allegiance to a certain team from the city in which I reside colors her commentary is as transparent as it is unfortunate.

That's why Jackets Required is better.

Allow an interloper to chime in on the PW debate. I too wondered a little about Bucci's use of the word flamboyant, and whether or not it was the "right" word to use. But I did not try to interpret any "big world" meaning beyond that. His two columns on Brendan were both important and heartfelt. That's the important thing to me. The thing I found fault with was how she found a way to intertwine that with Darby Hendricson's comments about how the women's teams "got the ice ready" for the men's game at Camp Randall. Somehow this is a slight to all female athletes and women's sports? His context was COMPLETELY understandable to me. Much like how race car drivers talk about the rubber being ground into the track in the preliminary races before the main event on Sunday and how that helps, this seems to be his context. And whether or not Paula likes it, the men's game WAS the main attraction. 55,000 people showed up for Red's and Mike's teams.

People spend waaaay too much time pointing out the negative's, or what THEY perceive as the negatives, and lose sight of what is good. Brendan came out, hoping his doing so would help bring about some change in the world and how we treat each other. Buccigross told us his story originally, because it was an important story to tell. He told us later how now he sees all the good and important things Brendan WOULD have done won't be done by him. Perhaps that will help spur someone else to take up that task. Isn't that a good thing? It doesn't need to be turned into a forum for how women are "second class citizens." Besides, I've got news for Paula. In 21st century America, it still brings more abuse and discrimination your way to be gay than to be female. But lets face it, if you want to hate someone there is always a reason. He's gay. She's black. You're white. I'm a Marine. Pick a reason. Brendan seemed like the kind of person that probably found a reason to LIKE someone. It seemed like those around him felt the same way about him. Isn't that the most important message of all?

I am beginning to wonder whether Paula somehow feels validated by irritating people/fan groups, like she is not a legitimate columnist unless she does. I know there is a place for that (editorial commentary), but I am not sure a weekly hockey league column (often riddled with factual errors) is the place. JMHO.

Well said '628 and RHBM, especially RHBM's last paragraph. I have not commented on Paula negatively, and, in a case or two, actually defended her. For me, this was a new low for her. I don't want to get into psycho-babble, but I am beginning to wonder whether Paula somehow feels validated by irritating people/fan groups, like she is not a legitimate columnist unless she does. And then of course, let's see, Paula Weston or John Buccigross, whom shall I read to be moved, enlightened, informed, educated, entertained? I'd say that's a pretty easy one for me.

I will admit that while reading Bucci's column I found his choice to use flamboyant to be one flaw in what was otherwise an impeccably written and moving piece. Not because I personally read the sentence as a slight on other homosexuals behavior, but because I knew that was how the majority of his demographic would.

That being said I was very put off reading Paula's column this morning, as was previously noted it was in no way the forum to offer that social commentary.

For me the strength in Buccigross' remembrance of Brendan was that he did not need to differentiate between Brendan being a strong, courageous, person versus a strong, courageous, gay, person.

Curious to see if anyone else was bothered by Paula's column today (or bothered to read it). I thought it was fine until she took a shot at Buccigross for his use of the word "flamboyant." Evidently that word is a sexist word because she sees it as connotative of "homosexual."

I just wrote out a very long post defending the column and trying to explain my interpretation of her argument. However, I'll just sum it up because it's just seemed too empty.

I don't think Paula meant that the use word "flamboyant" is sexist or homophobic, but rather that the social connotation the word has acquired means that the use of the word in a completely different context, such as the context of the Buccigross quote, will undoubtedly be misconstrued to suggest that someone who is flamboyant would not be accepted in the sports world.

Regardless, while I understand her attempt to use the tribute to Brendan to further the very message that he had fought for during his life, it ultimately seems disrespectful to his memory and to those mourning his loss to twist the news of his tragic death into an soapbox speech. And the subtitle for this part of the column is probably the worst part of it all.
