The official men's hockey page on Facebook says there will be "very cool" news coming in "the next 24 hours or so".

I find such teasing to be cruel, especially since promised "big news" has turned out to be a bit less than thrilling in the past.

But that doesn't mean I'm not excited.

New uniforms perhaps? Or maybe they are putting the names on the away sweaters

        The news:

        http://www.ritathletics.com/news/201...825100316.aspx

The RIT men’s hockey team will play the Robert Morris Colonials on Thursday, December 30 at 3 p.m. at the Consol Energy Center, brand new home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. This contest will replace the game that was originally scheduled on Friday, February 18 at Robert Morris and is part of the Penguins’ weeklong celebration of hockey in the week leading up to the 2011 Bridgestone Winter Classic.

That's fantastic news, if a little odd. That means two trips to Pittsburgh for the Tigers this year, each for only one game. And the December 30 game is only two days before our home game vs. Merrmack.

          Still, national exposure, baby.

This is the first game in a double header! The second game is an AHL game, Scranton Wilkes-Barre Penguins vs Hershey Bears!

Hmm, Pinner plays for the Bears. =) And DeMichiel might be too.

Really, this is fantastic, but it really puts the kibosh on my plans to go down to Pittsburgh to catch the weekend series in February.

It looks like the New Years Day showdown against Merrimack at the Ritter is going head-to-head with an Amerks game at home against Syracuse. Given the holiday, hangovers, school's out, and die-hard Amerk fans being occupied at the BCBS, this home date is shaping up to be a low draw for RIT.

I have heard that Merrimack Sophomore Stephane De Costa is a player to watch this year. That could help make it interesting.

You have to bet that Mike Emerick will allude to these two games during The NBC broadcast of The Winter Classic.

Doc did mention RIT advancing to the Frozen Four during the NHL Sunday game of the week on NBC, so I think you will be right. Always awesome to hear a legend mention the Tigers.

The allure of the Winter Classic is outdoor hockey. I don't understand how putting these games inside makes them part of the Winter Classic. Why not let them use the outdoor rink while it's available?

My wife suggested that the Steelers schedule makes it impractical to get the ice ready in time any earlier than Jan 1. The Steelers play at home Thursday night (the 23rd), so that would give them just six days to get the ice ready for the college/AHL game on the 30th. And if they want to have high school games and such as well, that makes the window even smaller.

Last year at Fenway, the Red Sox schedule wasn't exactly an issue. =)

Indeed. Now we need Pinner to make the Caps roster by then so he can play in the Classic.

With Penn State seemingly all but set to add a team and the inevitable Big Ten Hockey conference formed, any thought that RIT would consider jumping to a new CCHA to play with teams like Miami and Notre Dame?

Obviously, the biggest benefit would be better competition and opponents.

The biggest drawback would be that it would be EXTREMELY difficult to be a constant factor in the conference due to lack of scholarships.
