I guess we'll see about the Verizon when the schedule comes out. If I were a betting man, I would guess that we'll see Maine at the Verizon again this year.

Of course, now that I've said that, it will be BC.

I would be willing to bet the same as you.

Not to change the subject, but I'd like to take a moment and thank Mowers10 and Snively65 (as well as BU-Grad and Go-UML (I think)) for donating to me for the 24 Bowl (and to Darci for donating to one of our other members).

For those that don't know, a week from today, I will be bowling in a charity bowl-a-thon to benefit the Travis Roy foundation (thus, the link in my sig). I'm bowling with a group of fellow UNH fans, including my sister (legal_hit), and our friends Nick and Ankur, who used to post as Wildfan and whiteout, respectively. Fittingly, our team name is UNH.

There are two ways to donate - you can follow the link in my sig and make a one-time donation, or you can email me at mpedone@gmail.com and make a per-pin pledge (eg 10 cents/per pin for 1 game, which would probably work out to about $13 - I average about 130 pins). Every dollar counts (there is no floor) as we try to reach our team goal of $2000, and I try to reach my personal goal of $500 (I'm more than halfway there!).

There are prizes for getting donations, so please donate, and help UNH win something in April!

(And, for those that don't know what the Travis Roy Foundation is: The Travis Roy Foundation was established in 1997 to help other spinal cord injury survivors and fund spinal cord injury research. The Foundation has thus far awarded over half a million dollars in research grants through an extensive fund-raising effort from thousands of volunteers.)

I'm checking with my friend at the VWA to see if they have UNH v. Maine on the schedule.

@ freak: I hate facebook . . . but, I have been reading the responses, and waiting to see what happens. At the moment, I'm not sure what you've proposed will work, but before I say no I wanted to give myself time to seriously consider it, and I am trying to come up with alternatives to offer. I like where your heads at . . .

I've been thinking a bit more about the "plants" and it reminded me of the UNH Sixx from about 10 years ago. They were a little creepy, which is probably why they didn't last long. But, I was thinking something similar could exist again in a different way. Maybe there could be some sort of contest in the fall, perhaps at a football game, for the best fans. The prize could be guaranteed tickets to all home hockey games without having to wait in line. Or, if not a contest, maybe even auditions, like I presume they had for the Sixx. Whatever it is, they'd need to prove themselves to be energetic UNH hockey fans. The idea is that these would be people who would participate in the cheers and get the other students riled up. Oh, and they'd wear street clothes, no masks.

            Just an idea.

ETA - Obviously this would require cooperation from Athletics, but I think it would be reasonable.
That would be an OK idea, BUT they need to be more visible at sporting events, leading.

They had the "unmasking" at the end of the year and the general thinking was: 1) what is the UNH Sixx and 2) who cares. I don’t know anybody that ever saw them on campus leading any “spirt”. It was an idea at the time, and I’m happy it was attempted but the implementation left something to be desired.

It needs to be less about candy and more about leading.

I still think tapping into the RAs is the way to hook freshman early, increase the students and potential drive a bit of demand. As for the sucks, and b!t@h just tell the freshman that those are NU and Umass things that we don't want to be lame and copy. Or something similar.

Neither am I, but I'm sick of not trying something different, and then having this same discussion year after year.

I'll keep you updated, but will work from the assumption that you guys won't be there to be safe.

That would assume that the RAs care at all, when they often have trouble getting kids to floor socials...IN their own building when it doesn't conflict with partying.

This might work a bit. Over winter break when there were few students in attendance, I shamed one kid into not yelling either one. He was in front of a buddy and I, and whenever he would yell those, I would go off about all the Northeastern alums in attendance and how it didn't make sense. By the middle of the 2nd period he had reverted to just "skate, sit down" and "sieve."

I haven't read through the whole discussion yet, but some thoughts bring me back to my first year (my first freshman year ) which was the first year of the Whitt..

I had never been to a college hockey game, and didn't know anything about UNH hockey when I came to school... my roommate took me to a UNH/NU game and we sat on the opposite side of the current student section... Following that game, I made it to as many as possible and migrated over towards the other side and stood for every game, picking up as much of the cheers/chants, etc from the crowd and from the blue haired clown dudes that led the way. They were, IMHO the key in keeping things together.

Mid way through the season, I somehow got an email sent through the old school email system that had what to and what not to do at a UNH hockey game... all of the cheers, the timings, etc. The student involvement combined with the excitement of the games, made for some of the best times of my (long) time as a student at UNH, and maybe with a kick in the pants, the kids can get back into it...

Actually I think that UNH is backing off on a league game at the Verizon. Haven't had one there the last two years and I think the message has gotten across that you are doing the team no favors by scheduling a game on neutral ice. The Dartmouth game is enough, and I think that message has gotten through, as evidence by the pathetic ticket sales. We'll see.

They played Maine there last season, and at the time UNH had gone something like 8-2-0 against Maine in their last 10 matchups with the only losses at the Verizon...

Actually, as Gib notes (and I did earlier as well), we played Maine there last year. And 2 years before that.

I don't recall if you were involved in the Athletics sponsored "Spirit Focus Groups," but the Verizon issue as it came out of those groups is what tCBG, 29, and I were discussing. The Verizon issue was a major complaint in these SFGs the first couple years.

My recollection is that Dot told us that ADs compromise was that in years where UNH hosted Maine only once, that Dartmouth would be the only game in Manchester.

As I pointed out earlier, since that time, the pattern has held. UNH hosted two games vs Maine last year, and 2 years before that, and split them between the Whitt and the Verizon.

tCBG and 29 recall the connection being to years in which UNH hosted the NCAA regional in Manch, which also happens to fit the pattern.

I hope, of course, that the AD has indeed come around on the Verizon issue, and that it will just be Dartmouth from now on.

Bobby Butler report card from Ottawa's website:
"Newcomer Bobby Butler, who impressed in his first two NHL games last week, will sit out tonight, with Ryan Shannon drawing back into the lineup. "He's got a nice offensive touch, some creativity and I liked his board work as well," (Senators Head Coach) Clouston said of Butler. "There's some definite positives there for sure."

I have not been on the board for about 2 weeks... (wonders why)

Has there been talk of butler taking the Hobey? or is it going to the kid in Wisconsin? I thought Butler had better numbers than everyone other than Nyquist, but Nyquist is a Junior, and Maine didnt make it to the Dance.

Unh was pre ranked 4th in HE and wasnt projected to make the dance, and knocked off Cornell.

They wouldn't of been there without Butler.
