Also it does the gophers good to at least come up to North Dakota to see an elite hockey program once a year.Last edited by SoCalSiouxFan; 03-19-2010, 02:27 PM."For me, college hockey was obviously the best step I could have taken to get to the next level." - Jonathan Toews, North Dakota/Chicago Blackhawks

Re: WCHA Final Five: Hello Empty Seats
Speaking of empty seats, it looks to me like Friday attendance at the WCHA Final Five was equal or better than the other tournaments combined, again.
WCHA 27,300 (13 in the afternoon and 14 in the evening)
CCHA: 9,800 (single ticket)
HEA: 12,500 (single ticket)
AHA: 1,800 (single ticket)
ECACHL: not published - a bad sign in itself.
Total: 24,100 plus ECACHL.
Kinda makes you wonder how the other leagues make a go of it.
I've been impressed with the relatively large number of Gopher fans who've turned out.

Re: WCHA Final Five: Hello Empty Seats
People need to keep in mind the 14,000+ they said were there yesterday afternoon and night were sold numbers. There were more than 4,500 empty seats in that arena. I do agree Iam surprised at how many Gopher fans have shown up. Of course half of them are to gutless to have their colors on.I am Tommyboy, and I approve this message.

The Herb Brooks National Hockey Center..... I wonder who originally came up with that.

Originally posted by moose97 View PostAdd in the 15,300 from Thursday's UND, UMD game, and it's even worse. If they just get the 27,000 today, that's still close to 70,000 for the five games (and I'd guess the attendance would be better today than yesterday). No where near the record 92,000 from a few years ago, but not the "Hello Empty Seats" predicted, and no where near what is seen at the Joe or Fleet Center...
I don't know about that. These are paid attendance figures. There were tons of empty seats last night, In fact there was one section on the 200 level that contained only the UND band.
I was personally a little surprised by the Sconni turnout. Not much red in the building, But I guess their diehards went to basketball? They usually travel MUCH better. Sioux/SCSU turnout was impressive.
But you are correct, no where near what happens out east. But 22,000 in lost ticket sales does add up. The Big problem is next year imho. I had 4 of the 8 in my group bail and I probably won't renew those tickets. I suspect there are quite a few Gopher fans in that same position. I'll always keep my 4, but I got stiffed for $600+ this season by people bailing on me. I gave the 4 I was stuck with away, but they are not the type to go when they have to pay for it.Sports Alleigance

Re: WCHA Final Five: Hello Empty Seats
It ceases to amaze me how clueless people are. Any time anyone anounces attendance figures it is SOLD tickets. Figure it out finally. Plus, it's all that really matters. That's where the money comes from.

I haven't been impressed with the turnout of Badger fans at the Final 5 in several years. I don't know what it is, maybe we've come to just expect them to lose on Friday afternoon and not make the trip. I do think if they had won yesterday and played tonight, there would have been a better turnout of Badger fans than Friday, but still...not a good showing.
I also don't undertand why everyone who paid for the cheap seats on the end hasn't just moved around to the sides for a free in game upgrade. The only really full rows on the upper level sides have been when a row win the Kelloggs prize pack and everyone races over there to get in on the action.
The only highlight of Friday was running into someone on the sidewalk after the Badger game with "Shirtless Guy" on his tech jersey, who turned out to ineeded be THE Shirtless Guy.

The reason for the talent in the west? Because MN didn't rely on Canada.

But my point wasn't that it is too small, it isn't. I just expect a smaller rink to be more intimate than it is. There are way too many seats too far away for the size of the rink so it isn't that great for atmosphere IMO.
The thing is, sitting up high isn't all that bad for hockey. I sure don't mind it, but it does make the building feel much more open than it is for the capacity compared to other NHL arenas. It would also be poor for basketball for those reasons."...the great state University of Wisconsin should ever encourage that continual and fearless sifting and winnowing by which alone the truth can be found."
