Ducks Sign Nick Bonino
Sunday, 03.21.2010 / 6:25 PM / News
The Ducks have signed center Nick Bonino to a two-year entry-level contract. Per club policy, no terms of the deal were disclosed.
Bonino, 21 (4/20/88), just completed his junior season at Boston University (BU), scoring a team-leading 11-27=38 points in 33 contests. His 27 assists, 120 shots and +18 rating were also team highs. The 6-1, 190-pound center ranked tied for 10th among Hockey East players in scoring. The BU Terriers fell to the University of Maine in the Semifinals of the Hockey East tournament on Friday, Mar. 19.
Bonino’s 2009-10 season highlights include a career-best four assists on Jan. 16 vs. Merrimack and an assist on the game-winner in BU’s 3-2 win over Boston College at the Sun Life Frozen Fenway on Jan. 8 at Fenway Park. Bonino also notched three assists to reach 100 career points as a Terrier in a 6-2 win over the University of Massachusetts on Jan. 29. In addition, he was named to the Hockey East honor roll this season on four separate occasions (Oct. 12, Nov. 30, Dec. 14 and Jan. 18).
A native of Hartford, CT, Bonino won the NCAA Championship with BU in 2008-09. He helped the Terriers capture the Frozen Four tournament by scoring the game-tying goal with 18 seconds remaining to force overtime on Apr. 11, 2009 vs. Miami (Ohio). He finished second on the club with 18-32=50 points in 44 games and was one of only seven college hockey players in 2008-09 to register 50-or-more points. Bonino was named the Reebok Hockey East Player of the Month for February, scoring 6-8=14 points with a +9 rating in nine games.
Selected by San Jose in the sixth round (173rd overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Bonino was acquired by Anaheim with goaltender Timo Pielmeier in exchange for left wing Travis Moen and defenseman Kent Huskins on Mar. 4, 2009. In his first year at BU, Bonino led all Hockey East freshmen in goals, scoring 16-13=29 points in 39 games. Before enrolling at BU, he was the 2007 United States Hockey Report Prep Forward of the Year. He captained Avon Old Farms (Avon, CT) to the 2007 New England Division 1 Prep championship, scoring 24-42=66 points in 26 games.

- Based on what 3hock and others who know the team well have said, this team needs a Captain next year with the credibility to enforce discipline. I think that guy is Warsofsky. Arguably the best player on the team, a guy who has won a nat'l championship and a gold medal at the World Juniors, someone who knew he'd be a Terrier when he first put on skates, etc.
- Assuming Bonino and Shattenkirk are both gone, I wonder if C. Cohen will have any interest or be a good influence in the locker room. So maybe it's best if he goes too.
- Nieto, Coyle and Gill are all skilled players who are not well-suited to the 4th line. If I'm not mistaken, Cisse, if he comes next year, is a little more of a power forward.
- Some uncommited D-men out there: Austin Coldwell, Des Moines (USHL); Dan Furlong, Sioux Falls (USHL); Nick Amies, Cowichan Valley (BCHL) [#135 on mid-term rankings]; John Caldwell, Belmont Hill (MA) [#204 on mid-term rankings]; Logan Roe, Kent (CT) [#103 on mid-term rankings but listed by Heisenberg as an 11' recruit]; Jared Wiedemann, Dexter (MA) [#161 on Mid-term rankings]; Craig Boekenfohr, Camrose (AJHL). Disclaimer: this is not an exhaustive list and not an original one either - most have been mentioned by College Hockey Recruit Exchange, among others.

Maybe a question for Rogie, but are there any quality potential recruits left out there on defense?
We're going to need some, stat.
