If Maine wants to compete they will have to opt in. With a newish Alfond, new softball, new soccer, new field hockey and soon a new BBall facilty, the U would look pretty bad if they can't come up with the money. Not sure how the U faired in Mills new budget but I'd guess not that well. Hopefully the funding for the scholarships is private. Just remember title IX though so its going to cost more than just 8 schollies in Mens Hockey. Can you imagine how many draft picks BC and BU will have with 26 scholarships.

When is NIL going to enter the picture? Ohio State has something like 20 million in NIL money for football alone.

Maine will opt in. As will 90+% of Division I. Look no further than the baseball program, in which a bunch of recruits posted that due to upcoming NCAA regulations they are no longer committed to UMaine. The only regulation that could be is a roster limit, which would not apply if Maine was not opting in.

I would venture so far to say that if Maine did not opt in it would be the only school in Hockey East, America East, or the CAA to do so. Moot point, though, Maine is opting in.
I agree, Interesting point on the baseball roster limit.

I am sure we will hear soon from the other poster where he says “where will they get the money?”. You also are on record for saying you would be surprised if Maine makes the NCAAs right after the first loss to Denver. Since that time Maine is 3-1-1 against teams in the bubble with a sweep on the road against Lowell. Not shabby and Maine sits tied for 2nd in HE and 6th in the pairwise. Your opinions are foolish. Not all of them, but very many of them.

    https://www.ncsasports.org/mens-hockey/scholarships

Even the sports illustrated, espns, etc… are report it like it is a done deal.

So these aren’t only small dorks with blogs reporting it.

26 scholarships will happen and Maine will give out 26 full time rides. For both men’s and women’s likely.

You don’t spend 170 million on athletic upgrades to get cheap and say well we can’t afford an extra 8 scholarships for each hockey team.

That’s like saying I bought a big house on the ocean and after renovations I’ll have spent $5 million on it… but I’ll be damned if I pay the $75k in taxes each year. I won’t spend a penny more than $50k. Then they put a lien on your house and eventually make you sell it to pay the taxes you owe. Doesn’t make a lot of sense.

People in here thinking Maine will still be competitive only giving out 18 when other schools give out 26 are delusional. As delusional as the guy that can afford $5 million dollar house but not paying the extra $25K out of principles.

I'm not sure who doesn't think Maine will be giving out 26 full scholarships. Everything I've read suggests that almost all of D-I will be opting in. Now, the "revenue sharing" piece that caps the transfer from schools to athletes at like $22M is absolutely not going to be universal, but the exceptions to the opt in are going to be the Ivies (don't need to, pretty much everyone attends for free anyways), and I read somewhere that the Northeast Conference (which includes hockey schools Mercyhurst and Stonehill) may not opt in.

I'm curious what it means for the multi-division schools. D-III schools aren't doing the opt-in for D-III sports, but what does that mean for (say) St. Lawrence?

Unless the House settlement blows up. Maine will be opting in.
