  • Had my first opportunity to take in a practice this offseason. Barr wasn't on the ice, so Fortier/Michaud led the drills, big emphasis on PP/PK.

Based on what they worked on, I'd expect them to be very aggressive on the PK. Really liked seeing them practicing retreating diamond structures on the breakout for the PK. That should help them stand teams up in the neutral zone more often by forcing icings/offsides and create more turnovers. Good way to improve their 25th-ranked PK from last season (80.6%). PP breakout didn't look fresh (the pressure of that 1-3 PK was a struggle for them).

None of the goalie really stood out to me in good or bad ways. Will keep an eye out on them if I can make it to any other practices over the next couple weeks.

Forwards were getting mixed and matched a bunch, so imagine the final trios will change often. Noticed Nobes getting used mostly at forward so that's something interesting to keep an eye on as the season progresses. The D-pairings stayed pretty consistent so I'd imagine the top three units are relatively locked in. Some lines combos I saw together frequently:

    Nadeau-Breen-Scholle
    Freel-Scott-Russell
    Mitton-Pichette-Niemo
    Makar-Renwick-Fowler
    Scholle-Komarov-Nobes
    Freel-Scott-Calafiore
    Mitton-Pichette-Scholle
    Niemo-Breen-Nadeau
    Renwick-Scott-Russell

    Breazeale-Chabrier
    Holt-Djurasevic
    Lesakowski-Antonacci
    Arnott-Dalton
    Holt-Morse
    Dalton-Morse

    PP units:
    Mitton-Breen-Scholle
    Chabrier-Nadeau

    Niemo-Freel-Nobes
    Breazeale-Antonacci

    Renwick-Scott-Freel
    Lesakowski-Antonacci

    PK units:

    Breazeale-Chabrier

    Scott-Freel

    • Makar-Renwick-Fowler has a chance to be a wrecking ball line that gets under your skin

Djurasevic was an excellent find out of the portal he is going to be a game changer

I’m guessing Holt/Djuresevic must have been a pairing for a power play unit. You have Antonacci listed twice, and he is not really an offensive power play type. He’s strong fundamentally on defense but undersized. For his size though he is a defensive bulldog. But Holt/Djuresevic might be the 2nd power play pairing because they like to use one defensemen for the top unit which Charbrier did a lot of.

        • The rich get richer....Denver scoops up Mikey Berchild. Thought that Maine might have an outside shot....a lot of people thought he was bound for Minnesota. Gopher fans must be beside themselves....they have not done well keeping their best at home.

Thanks for this. How did the news guys look, especially Russell and the freshmen? Does Carney look like he might contribute this year?

At this point Maine would be better off not being on tv.

They could kick extra point to be down by field goal, instead they go for a two point play and did this odd formation that looked horrible. Failed. I haven’t been following yet this year, but I’m guessing coaching isn’t a strength.

Not every team can turn 1st and 10 from the 40 into a safety.

I guess there is a reason the coach has a 5-20 record.

                    • Unreal, Maine took so many penalties it backed them up to the end zone and was 1st and 34 yds to go. Next play is a sack in the end zone for the safety. I’m not sure they could have played any worse on that series. This isn’t a cliche. I’m legitimately trying to think of anything more they could have done worse. I suppose if he fumbled it on the sack and then Merrimack recovered it for a touchdown. But this was very close to being the worst you can play. It likely it the worst you can do without turning the ball over.

And they should have started from Merrimack’s 40 yard line, but a Maine blocker was called for a hold on the return. Which he held after the return man already was by him anyways.

                        • If they're doing things like turning 1st and 10 from the 40 into a safety against when playing Merrimack, they are going to get absolutely vaporized in Norman in November.

                          • Steven's should be on the hot seat. Even with that win football is a 3-4 win team. Luckily hockey doesn't stink anymore

They were going to be vaporized anyway haha they may be down 50 at half

I’m not sure what happened at half time but at least they turned that game around. Have to give credit for that at least.
