  • Barr’s got some ?s to answer about Boija too if he’s well enough to back up ….. head scratcher

Maine Hockey: I want to believe
    43-21-4 (.662) in games I attended over 4 years as a student
    104-47-14 (.669) in that time
    3x FROZEN FOUR

11-20-2 in games I've attended since. (2-2-1 under Red)

    • I would have taken Boija at 30% than Ostman at 100%

      • Will we ever get a team that can skate the puck in the offensive zone instead of dump dump dump. Sure hope Barr can bring in players who can do that and adopt that sort of strategy.

        • I’m shocked the game plan didn’t work out. On paper, it was perfect:

          1. Skate into resistance
          2. Turn your back to play
          3. Flip the puck blindly (direction not important)
          4. Get outskated to the loose puck

          • We played right into their wheelhouse. Never gonna win a grind game like that.

            • There's plenty or improvement to be had by everyone associated with the program. An upgrade in talent and size is a must of Maine is to truly compete with the elite programs.

              • They wilted badly after the second goal. I don't know if they got discouraged, or scared, or frustrated or whatever the case, but it felt basically over at that point, and after the third goal any faint sliver of hope I had was dashed completely. They played pretty well early on, at least in my opinion, but obviously couldn't keep it up.

Ostman was bad, as we all saw. The second goal in particular was just brutal, and the first and third he could have had, maybe "should" have had, but he wasn't up to the task in what was likely his swan song in Orono, I would think. Kind of a bad look on Boija and/or Barr, whoever decided he couldn't go (but could still take warmups and be on the bench) made the wrong decision.

On the whole, obviously a good season, and the jump we were expecting. Maybe faded a bit at the end, but hopefully with another year of experience and age that won't happen again next year. If they have a good offseason, they should be in position to be an elite contender, if all the right moves get made.

                • I did not see Maine getting their *** handed to them. Other than the goal Maine barely generated another decent chance.

Cornell was very impressive. Certainly wish them the best going forward.

                  • Barr is a good coach and it's very fortunate he wasn't hired at RPI otherwise he may have actually turned that program around. I thought Maine played quite tenaciously in the 1st period and they did a good job interrupting Cornell's transition through the neutral zone for a while. The hit that resulted in the major was completely unnecessary and more a product of an overeager freshman in his first game on the NCAA stage rather than anything malicious. Regardless, Maine failed to score on the ensuing PP and things progressively turned from there as Cornell systematically wore down the Maine defense and Shane wasn't giving up anything. One can debate back and forth whether Boija should've played but the bigger issue for Maine is the defense, which presumably improves as Barr recruits better players to Orono.

                          • If someone had come to you in September and offered home ice in Hockey East, a trip to Boston and an NCAA tournament invite, who would have said no?

It's been a long time since there has been any hope around the program, or indeed the athletics department as a whole. Three NCAA tournament berths in 23-24, contract extensions for successful coaches and plans for extensive renovations in the coming years are all signs of a rejuvenated department with an exciting future.

                            • Didn’t have a good feeling after they failed to capitalize on the 5 minute major.

it’s been obvious all season they need more scoring depth
