  • From what I was always told the "last minute to play in the period" call stems from the old school scoreboard clocks which basically were shaped just like large timers and as they got closer to the end became more difficult to read. The announcement was a way of giving everyone in the building a "heads up" on the last minute and the tradidtion continues.

If anyone is old enough to remember the old Chicago Stadium, home to the Blackhawks, they had the last one which I believe was replaced after the Stanley Cup finals in 1971.

    • agree Marmot...was thinking same thing: 4 points really important, anything more a bonus...time to defend "our house"...hope our butterflies are not sufficiently busy improving the world and can amble down to the Class of '65 and support their fellow student-athletes...

The Colgate athletics department is promoting free mac and cheese to the first 200 students tonight. We shall see if it helps attendance.

          • Is the mac and cheese pre-made or in a box?

              • Huge win. Gutted out a dodgy third period and the early ejection of McGuire. Very happy right now. Gotta pick up the other three points tomorrow.

                • Was also nice to [finally!] see a large crowd.

                  • It was nice to see a good crowd!! IMHO, Daniel Panetta and Simon LaBelle are providing a lot of intensity and are so fun to watch. Congrats, guys, on a good win! Go 'gate!

                    • Back home in Owego, successfully dodging a buck and then, separately, a doe on the way home…

it was a magical evening on many different fronts for me… went to Seven Oaks Clubhouse for Friday fish fry with Endicott Larry and bumped into 1992-2023 Colgate coach Don Vaughan, who is enjoying retirement. Joining Endicott Larry and myself for dinner were Clarkson Doug and Hamilton Russ. Afterwards, I went to Chalk Talk and chatted with 2023-24 Colgate coach Mike Harder. Then I went to my seat, near 1972-75 Colgate coach R. Braden Houston, who is the same age as Clarkson Doug and who also grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Lastly, sitting next to me was Clarkson grad Tim C., with whom I worked at GE in Utica, N.Y., 1980-85.

As for the game, it was all Colgate. We gave Clarkson opportunities to come back, but as soon as they did, we shut them down again. Colgate coaches are finally getting our players to block shots. We are also winning the small battles, many against the boards. For whatever reason, Clarkson appeared lackadaisical at times; not its usual self. They apparently rotate goalies evenly; I originally thought that they were saving Austin Roden for Cornell. But they apparently were saving their Pep Band for Cornell, as it was AWOL tonight, though the school on the whole travels well. I spoke briefly with golfer extraordinaire Charlie on the way out and he aptly stated that we play to the level of our opponents, either up or down. Tonight was up.
P.S. - Brett Chorske continues to impress me. CC’s loss was our gain.
P.P.S. - Carter Gylander deserves every accolade that he receives. He didn’t face a ton of shots tonight, but those he did were anticipated extremely well.
P.P.P.S. - All the scores are final tonight and Clarkson and Colgate are now tied at PWR#34.

                      • taking care of business on home ice...the Mac & Cheese must've worked since the crowd was decent...Gylander very solid and across the board contributions a key...the Ryan McGuire 5-minute major? To his credit the Clarkson player got right up...never saw any reply...I get the players must be protected in that 6 foot space between the ice and the boards, but certainly some of these calls so far this season (both for and against us) seem a little too tight...3 more points tonight would be great; SLU always plays us tight...

                        • Watching on tv I thought it was a pretty evenly played game with goaltending the difference. Leading 2-0 early in the third, when Clarkson scored making it 2-1, I thought here we go again, going to blow another third period lead and lose the game. Quelle surprise, we answered back making it 3-1 and I relaxed a bit. Clarkson was still coming at us and scored again making it 3-2. But guess what, we answered back again making it 4-2 with three minutes left. This is not what we have done so far this year, answering back Twice in the third. This was one of our best performances of the year to me by far !
On Clarkson's challenged second goal, Gylander was definitely hit by a Clarkson skater going thru the crease and he immediately complained. After seeing the replay 2-3 times my opinion was he was definitely interfered with and the goal should have been waived off. A quality win over a quality team, now get ready for tonight and get the sweep.

Three stars of the game, Gylander, Labelle and Pierson Brandon honorable mention to Robbie Newton who scored his first goal, and it was a snipe !

                          • Totally agree that goaltending was the difference. Gylander can be maddeningly inconsistent, but last night he was very, very good, particularly in the 3rd period when we were on our heels a bit.

Overall, I like the new style of play under Coach Harder. It is markedly more enjoyable to watch than Vaughan’s system (too early to say if it is better or worse, but it is definitely more entertaining). Hopefully, the fast paced scheme will draw in recruits; you think it would be more fun to play. Last night’s game is one to show them: high tempo, good atmosphere. Very curious to see how he does in recruiting. Some of the ones in the past few months seem promising.

                            • Great win last night. A full 60 minute effort, in my opinion.

First period, we kill a 5-minute major penalty, with an exclamation point. Second period, we score twice to take a 2-0 lead. And while Clarkson roared back in the 3rd period, we took full advantage of having a full 2 minutes of 5x3, scoring just 15 seconds in. Then we scored our 4th goal before Clarkson could pull the goalie.

And we also took advantage of no Clarkson pep band! They’re never friendly.

                              • Marmot...incoming class at this point (and we're pretty late fishing for 2024 recruits) looks pretty good IMO...maybe a B+...although, and someone did mention this a while back, I see only two defensemen on tap for 2024 (here again, we may move a 2025 kid to 2024 or will reach into the transfer pool)...the Harder approach? would agree, and you can tell the aggressive play by the "D" by the number of goals and assists racked up by our blue liners...there is a downside (see Harvard game), but the more aggressive play may just help a little in recruiting...
