Final 38-14 but actually should have been an even wider spread. Early in the game our defense was making some uncharacteristic mistakes (ruffing the kicker, ruffing the passer, etc.). A game we should have won (we were about 20 point favorites) and did in convincing fashion. Not exactly a rough schedule so far but good preparation for what will come later as Union and Hobart and Ithaca are going to be very tough.

I'd like to give a shout-out to RPI's #94, Nate Sicard, who, as I saw it, was responsible for the play that completely changed the momentum of today's football game, though he was not given credit for it by either the WRPI broadcast crew or the person who prepared the official play-by-play.

With the score tied, 7-7, late in the first quarter, Wilkes, who had scored on their first possession and had just picked up a first down on their second possession, completed a short pass over the middle. The receiver started to turn upfield, but an RPI tackler stripped him of the ball, which rolled to an area where three other RPI players converged on it.

The WRPI announcers gave credit for the initial hit to #96, Sam Leito. The official play-by-play gave credit to #42, Diego Fernandez, for both forcing the fumble and recovering it.

Fernandez may well have been the guy who recovered the ball, but the way I saw it, #94, Sicard, was the one who forced the fumble.

After the fumble recovery, Jake Kazanowsky immediately completed a 41-yard TD pass to put RPI in the lead, and Wilkes never came close to regaining momentum after that.

Saw the play in person standing on the concourse in direct line and less than a 100 feet from it. Play happened so damned fast that even with that vantage point I had absolutely no idea exactly who did what until reading it here. These guys are quite a few feet further away and way, way, way higher. They also don't have the spotters Nestler & Danielson or Fowler & Herbstreet have.

Keep in mind that a miss here and a miss there by either the present day broadcast teams or the solo efforts is still a whole lot better and welcomed than the work product that came out that same booth little more than a half decade ago.

Exactly the way i saw it and it was the turning point in the game. RPI should have been the far better team on the field but played the first 15 minutes as if they were trying to make as many defensive mistakes as they could think of. Admittedly, this was not the most astute officiating corps i have ever seen and they were making some very unusual calls and even some unorthodox placements of the ball, but still, we seemed to be handing this one to the opponent. After the play you correctly described, this game changed character. I liked that coach put everyone in but the water boy for the last 6 minutes of the game giving some much needed game time experience to the other quarterbacks and running backs. The kicking game was far better than the previous week with more consistent and longer punts and I think we might actually be able to convert a few longer field goals this season 9albeit not in the Andrew Frank range).
