      Week 18

The Sharks took care of business against Stonehill this weekend, scoring 18 goals in the process. Now they welcome in the Nanooks this coming weekend who just swept Arizona State. UAF at LIU will be the lone independent games this week.

      Team of the week

      Alaska Nanooks

Friday night was a game in which the visiting team outshot and for the most part out skated the home team. The difference was some amazing saves by Matt Radomsky along with multiple open chances missed by ASU. The Nanooks took a 2-0 lead early in the third and held on for the 2-1 win. On Saturday, the Sun Devils scored less than 3 minutes into the game only to see their lead disappear after 2 quick goals by Alaska. After a mostly quiet second period, Arizona State had a chance to tie things up on a late power play. But freshman Braden Birnie went coast to coast and scored a shorthanded goal which would eventually be the game winner. Josh Doan would again make it a one goal game early in the third off a turnover. That is as close as they would get as the Nanooks would add two more goals before things became a little more physical at the end.

      Forward of the week

      Adam Goodsir of LIU
      3 goals 4 assists

      Defenseman of the week

      Arvils Bergmanis of Alaska
      1 goal 1 assist 6 blocks

      Goalie of the week

      Matt Radomsky of Alaska

Here's hoping Alaska takes care of business for the rest of the year and gets a little help to get an at large bid. They deserve it considering what they have been through.

            Week 19
We are getting close to the season end with all but one remaining game to be played amongst the independents. Lindenwood played at home for the first time since October 15 and Alaska made the long trip to Long Island. The Sharks will return the favor and head to Fairbanks for two more games.

            Team of the week

            Lindenwood Lions

After sixteen straight games on the road, the Lions welcomed in the Stonehill Skyhawks. Lindenwood started off slow, with Stonehill leading 1-0 after 1. The home team tied it up just under eight minutes into the second and added two more goals late in the period to take the 3-1 lead on their way to a 5-2 final. On Saturday Lindenwood wasted no time, with Adam Conquest scoring just twenty six seconds into the game. They would finish the period up 4-0 and add four more in the second. Leading 8-2 going into the third period, the Lions would not let Stonehill out score them for even a period, hitting double digits and winning 10-3.

            Forward of the week

            Anthony Vincent of LIU
            3 goals

            Defenseman of the week

              Week 20

The home teams were able to win all four games on the weekend. Though both had to make comebacks on Saturday to get the sweeps. Arizona State crushed Lindenwood on Friday, scoring the first five goals of the game we route to a 8-2 victory. The Lions played a much stronger game on Saturday, though every time they took a lead, the Sun Devils would answer back in under 200 seconds. With the teams tied, Christopher Grando would give ASU their first lead of the game at the 3:22 of the third period. They would add an empty net goal late to get the 5-3 victory and the sweep. Up in Alaska the Nanooks hosted LIU after a split last weekend in New York. I’m game one the Sharks struck first, early in the second period and held the lead for the majority of the middle frame. The Nooks then got two goals in the final five minutes of the second to go ahead. UAF carried the momentum into the final period, with Chase Dubois scoring just 42 seconds in to take a 3-1 lead. LIU would score with the extra attacker with 65 seconds left but it was too little too late. Long Island would come out strong on Saturday, leading 2-0 at the end of the first. They added a powerplay goal four minutes into the second to go up 3-0 in a quiet Carlson Center. A Jonny Sorenson powerplay goal brought the crowd to life and exactly eight minutes later, the Nooks scored their fourth straight to go up 4-3. They would add two more in the third period, including an 180 foot crease clearing shot to the empty net for their sixth unanswered goal. Alaska travels to Arizona State this weekend for the rematch between the two schools while UAA heads east to play LIU three times.

Yes, how could I forget. The last non independent game for any of the independent teams. Sure would be nice if Anchorage could pull it off!

Lindenwood and Arizona State both traveled to Alaska to play the Nanooks and Seawolves respectively. The Sun Devils took game one in Anchorage by a score of 5-0 and looked to get the four game season sweep on Saturday. The Seawolves though wouldn’t lay down that easy. UAA took a first period lead and either led or were tied for the rest of the game en route to a 4-3 victory. Up in Fairbanks the Lions led 1-0 after the first period on Friday. The next five periods on the weekend the Nanooks outscored Lindenwood 12-0. The Nanooks sit idle and wait for the NCAA tournament selection show while Lindenwood heads south to Anchorage and LIU travels to Arizona State for the final weekend of the season for those four teams.

It’s been an exciting season for sure! Hoping for some favorable results this weekend. The last time I saw the Nooks lose in person was in October against Tech and that includes three road games.

                                Week 23

Four teams officially finished their seasons this weekend and Alaska is still hoping for an at large bid to the tournament. LIU traveled to Tempe and had a 3-2 lead heading into the third before ASU scored 4 unanswered to take Friday’s game 6-3. The following night each team had at least 35 shots on goal yet ended regulation tied at 1. Josh Doan scored the game winner in overtime for the Sun Devils in his apparent last collegiate goal. In Anchorage, the Seawolves welcomed the Lions to town and proceeded to compete in a game that ended with 7 goals on each side and UAA winning the shootout. Saturday was another back and forth affair, with 5 of 7 goals coming in the second period. Tied at three, the teams would head to extra time for the second straight night, this time with the Seawolves ending the season with a 4-3 overtime victory.
