Week 10
Another light week with only two teams in action this week in Division 1. Alaska Anchorage hosted Simon Fraser for two exhibition games in which they outscored them 10-0. Arizona State lost two at Denver including a controversial game winning goal on Friday. LIU was able to come back to earn the split with Brown.
Team of the week
Long Island Sharks
After losing to Brown on Saturday 5-1, the Sharks found themselves down 4-1 on Sunday nearing the end of the second period. Cade Mason scored his first of two powerplay goals in the game just before the second period ended. The Sharks would add another goal halfway through the third and would pull the goalie late in the third down by one. With 39 seconds left in regulation the Sharks tied it and sent it to overtime. Cade Mason scored the game winner on a power play that saw the Brown goalie sent to the locker room with a game misconduct.

Defenseman of the week

That being said, the Lions lead the country in penalties and you just can't do that playing good teams as it kills them every time.
Unfortunately on that goal call in Denver on that ASU weekend, it was hard to tell if they hit the puck with what was clearly a stick above the shoulders. If he didn't hit the puck it can't be a high stick call so they can't overturn that on a challenge, and can't call it a slash on review since they didn't call it on the ice. Either way they clearly botched the call on so many levels in my opinion.

Referee came back a day later, said he called it a no-goal cause of high sticking but "forgot" to signal it on the ice, thus not high sticking upon review. Didn't call slashing on ice so can't call that later either. There was a "no-signal" for a "no-goal live but goal upon the come-to-jesus review". That's why the challenge was challenged. Good luck when you play them.

Wow that's awful! Last thing we need against them is corrupt officiating!
AIC sent game tape to the NCAA on the call they challenged that was called a 5 minute major (but no game misconduct??) after the 15 minutes of looking at tape as they wanted the kid suspended. NCAA said they have no idea why a penalty was called and didn't even think it should be a minor. LOL.
Life of an independent I guess. Those leagues are afraid to lose to them even if its legit

I do think life as an independent is harder as they get different officials from different leagues with unique areas of emphasis/playing style they are use to calling. Complaining to other league head of officials would get brushed off. We all know the NCAA won't do anything no matter how egregious the call/no call is.

The NCAA rules allow the visiting team to bring their own refs, just has to be written into the contracts. I'm thinking its time for the "Independents" to get together, decide on a group of independent refs to use and bring those to the away games. Also use them on home ice if the opposing traveling team doesn't want to bring their own.
I don't know how the multi-conference tournaments work from a referee standpoint but maybe there is something to learn from those?

Week 12
A week of near upsets before Christmas. After being shutout on Friday night, Lindenwood battled back to tie Denver in the third period before losing on a goal in the closing minutes. On Sunday, LIU was down 3-0 to Northeastern before scoring 3 unanswered to send it to overtime where for the second time this season, the Huskies beat the Sharks in overtime. Up in Anchorage the Nanooks swept the Seawolves again to hold onto the governors cup for another year.
Team of the Week
Alaska Nanooks
Two more wins this week, this time not allowing a goal on the road at UAA. Friday night the Nanooks jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a goal on a delayed penalty and again on the ensuing powerplay. UAF added a goal a minute into the third and and empty goal late. Saturday night was a tight one to the end. Neither team could get much going until a late powerplay for the Nanooks. With sustained pressure, Chase Dubois found the back of the net just two seconds after the penalty to Anchorage had expired. The Nanooks held on to the 1-0 victory after a last minute push by the Seawolves.

Week 13
What a week for the independents. Lindenwood splits at Vermont, Alaska splits at Notre Dame, Arizona State splits at home versus Boston College and Alaska Anchorage sweeps at UMass- Lowell. The only team to not get a win was LIU who lost in OT on Friday and in another close game on Saturday. The difference maker this week was goaltending. Of the seven goalies who played this weekend, six had a save percentage of at least .921.
Team of the Week
Alaska Anchorage Seawolves
UAA rolled into Lowell Massachusetts with two NCAA wins this season. By Sunday that total had doubled. Friday Lowell was piling on the shots but by the start of the third period only had a 2-1 lead with 43 shots. With their first win when trailing after 2 periods, Anchorage scored 3 unanswered goals to take game one 4-2. Saturday was a much more even game in shots, but it was Anchorage who began the third period ahead 3-1. The Seawolves held on 3-2 for their first sweep of the season.
