  • I think it has been noted somewhere that in the three title game losses of the 90's ('91, '94, and '97) BU gave up five goals in the second period each time.

Maybe, but they didn’t win The Beanpot, which is another historical element to remember

        • Not as big of a deal now that it seems like Pandolfo is happy with the job, but it seems Wisconsin is willing to pay more for the head coach position than BU is.

it costs far more to live in/near Boston than it does in/near Madison (one website has Boston costing 42% more). Also, it was widely noted that Coach Hastings is a Midwestern guy, so Boston was outside his preferred area, while Madison is in it.

Geography did not play a role.

After 39 games Coach Pandolfo is tied with Coach Parker with 29 wins, one behind Coach Cleverly and is third in winning percentage behind Coaches Cleverly (30-7-2, 0.795) and Parker (29-9-1, 0.756). No matter what happens at the Frozen Four he will remain third as both Coaches Cleverly and Parker won their 40th and 41st games. When looking at all DI head coaches, Coach Pandolfo is the second first year head coach to win the league regular season title, tournament title and reach the Frozen Four (Coach Bennett, Union, 2011-12).

What does BU pay? What does Wisconsin pay?

                    • Anyone think that there will be anyone cheering for us other than BU fans? I’m not thinking so. Michigan and Minnesota will be cheering for each other because that’s what those midwest teams normally do. They even cheer on their biggest rivals. I don’t think local Lightning fans will be cheering for any team with Boston across their jerseys. Quinnipiac? Not sure about them. Most frozen fours I’ve been to have the majority cheering against us - even in Boston much to my disappointment!

I actually disagree. Remember that we are the underdog and that can go a long way in terms of fan support. In 1997, in our upset win against Michigan, the crowd sounded pretty fired up as we built up a 3-1 lead, and I suspect we had all the Sioux fans cheering for us. I get your point about Boston vs. the Midwest, but again, people like to see an upset, especially if it means their path to a championship might get easier. Also, there are a lot of transplants from the Northeast in that area (I just learned today that a group I knew while at BU has rented a suite for the tournament - some of them live down there, others are traveling).

                        • I guess it is possible if people see us as the underdog, we might get some support. I sure hope so, but I’m not optimistic. Michigan fans certainly should not want to face Minnesota again I would think. I don’t like facing conference foes in the NCAA tournament, especially the championship. I like the inter-conference matchups.

I’m one of those transplants (although I’ve lived here for 30 years!) who have kept the old allegiances from my younger days.

I agree with you...most people (except BU fans) will be cheering against us. If DC was any example...and even in BOSTON in 2015 there were more people cheering for Providence.

I was certainly cheering for Providence in 2015. This year though, even as a BC fan, I will be rooting for BU. For the good of the league and the good of Eastern hockey.
