  • Back in Ogdensburg…

Well, we employed the defensive strategy in the third period (and part of the second) and it was successful for us tonight. I still hate it.

Manderville, DiPaolo and Verboon scored for us. Obviously they heeded the calls for more balanced scoring.

And if Emil Zetterquist is a better goalie than Carter Gylander, as has been suggested on here, then his reward is that he gets to watch Carter’s Colgate team play at Lake Placid on ESPN+ from the comfort of his own place… for the second straight year.

Finally, I predicted two one-goal games up here. I just didn’t expect not to be heading back to Saint Lawrence tomorrow for a third game. I look forward to traveling to Lake Placid next weekend. Go ‘Gate!

Not sure I can make the early game on Friday but haven't ruled it out yet. I really need to get back up there.

          • Congratulations on your win this weekend. Would’ve loved for my Saints to have made it back to Lake Placid, but I’ll be rooting for you guys none the less.

Does anyone know what section each team has for their fans allotment of tickets? We got our tickets already, but just curious who’s fan section we’ll be closest to.

One guy has a frog in his throat, annoying. The other squeals every time when the Saints score. Also annoying.

Still think Gylander is worrisome, but the offense bails him out. He is also nerve racking when he plays behind the net. Q outshot ‘Gate 41-19 in November; Placid will be a tall order. Colgate already took care of Q in January. Once against the No. 1 team should be enough! :-/

              • What are the game times Friday? We beat 'em once; let's do it again. It's not impossible.

                • Yes, those announcers were absolutely awful. There will be some home bias with the local calls but this was just embarrassing on their part. I am glad we swept in 2 so I don’t have to hear those two clowns again.

Best of luck to the men this weekend and congrats on making it to Placid. Quinnipiac is obviously a great team but it helps knowing we have beat them this year.

                    • I’m kind of surprised at the comments about the announcers. I didn’t think they were that bad. Sure they rooted for the Saints but they also praised Colgate’s defense and shot blocking. And the play by play guy said after Saturdays game that he thought the better team won the series.

Before the SLU series I thought that if we got by them that we would definitely lose to Qpac. But the way we won game 1 coming back from 3 goals down on the road makes me think we can pull off the upset this Friday. But it will take the best game we’ve played all year to do it. And Gylander needs to outplay Perets. But it’s a hockey game - anything’s possible.

                      • The best role is that of the underdog. I think Colgate will be full of energy. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain. There is always a Nice contingent of support up there in LP for Colgate. The problem is that history has not been kind to the Raiders here or in AC, and that is not reassuring. Will never forget our OT win over the Bobcats with the Spink twins. But nothing, I mean nothing, tops our playoff series as the 12th seed vs. RPI & Union. A miracle on ice.

Agree that the announcers were complimentary. They certainly praised the top line more than once.

                        • Absolutely right, Bill - we play our best as the underdog. In terms of the announcers - let's face it, we have the very best announcer in the ECAC and possibly all of collegiate hockey in John McGraw, so anything short of him is disappointing.

                          • Not to beat a dead horse, but... with regard to Carter Gylander, I am less concerned about him playing now as I am about him NOT playing. Remember Mitch Benson and his injury (in practice)? How do we know who else we have now (in terms of strength) and how will they fare in actual competition? Just when I think that I am the last person on earth who would rotate goalies during the regular season, I read this today about coach Brent Larson and his advancing Saint Cloud State Huskies... 'After losing Game 2, Larson and his staff decided to switch goaltenders. Dominic Basse and Jaxon Castor split time all season, with nearly identical stats. But Basse got the nod in the first two games. In Game 3, Larson went with Castor, who was fresher. "To play Dom three games in three nights ... I wasn't sure," Larson said to the Times. "He could have played great, or he could have been fatigued. We just decided to go with the fresh goalie and ... the rotation hasn't hurt us too bad this year, so we felt confident in doing it."

'Any team can beat any other team on any given day, which is why we play the game.' I get that. But I still don't think that we will get by Quinnipiac on Friday. Of the 62 D-1 men's ice hockey programs in the country, they are PairWise Ranked (PWR) #2 for a reason, behind Minnesota. They have proven to be that good over the course of the entire season (and I personally believe that it is mainly because of their transfers and graduate students). Yes, we split with Quinnipiac this season, just as we did with Harvard and Cornell (in a shoot-out). But we were also swept by Niagara, split with Maine and lost to, and tied, Vermont, all of whom are playing golf today (with a PWR lower than ourselves). We just honestly aren't in Quinnipiac's league this season. This isn’t #4 at Lake Placid going up against #1. Nor is it #5 in the ECAC Hockey regular season meeting #1. This is #28 in the nation taking on #2 in the nation. David versus Goliath kind of stuff.

Penultimate thought tonight and this blows my mind... from College Hockey News... "(Northeastern's Devon) Levi and (Quinnipiac's Yaniv) Perets both hail from Dollard des Ormeaux, Quebec, while (Michigan Tech's Blake) Pietila is from Howell, Mich." Stop and think about that fact for a moment... two of the three best goalies in NCAA Division-One men's ice hockey in America this one season (2022-23) are both from the same town in Quebec, Canada. And we aren't even talking 'Montreal' nor 'Quebec City.' Crazy!!

Finally, I am headed to Ogdensburg on Thursday, and Lake Placid on Friday (with Clarkson Doug). If anyone hears of another Colgate pre-game reception in Lake Placid this year, please let me know on here. Last year, Clarkson Doug and I sat at a table at the reception with a former Colgate player that played outdoors, pre-Starr Rink. Doug also chatted with Pierre McGuire, which pleased the 44-year Clarkson season-ticketholder to no end. Thanks.

                            • Iowa - I admit if Qpac brings their A game on Friday they’ll beat us. They’ve won 12 straight and are on a mission to win a national championship. But I’m holding out hope. And it’s a plus for us that we didn’t have to play a game 3 vs SLU.
