UMass Lowell 2022-2023: Valley Steamroller Edition

Admittedly a small sample size, but through 2 games, Lowell has had 9 power plays for a total of 16:02 of power play time. During those 16+ minutes, they have only attempted 13 shots. All 13 were on net, and 1 went in, but only attempting 0.8 shots per minute of power play time just isn't going to cut it. That number should be at least 3-4 times higher. Get more shots toward the net on the power play, and good things should start to happen. That and getting the puck on net when the goalie is down and out of position.

In years past, they seemed to like to work the rotation and hit the wings, or try a cross ice, backdoor pass to either a wing or the point man crashing in. That's been open a couple of times, especially with Brushett being the open player, but they haven't pulled the trigger on the pass. They just need to move the puck quicker in the offensive zone. It's a lot of hold and then pass when they're under pressure. Doesn't work well against aggressive PKs.

MSU 4-3, the game winner was on a penalty shot. I watched the game online; I was a bit surprised they called a penalty shot. I figured it would be a hooking call as there was little to no separation. Tough luck on the play as the Lowell defenseman broke his stick. The Hawks did a nice job getting back into the game after a tough 1st period. A big game tomorrow night.

They really struggled in their own zone during that portion of the first period. MSU looked quicker and faster and did a good job getting shots on net with traffic. Lowell also took 5 penalties in the first period and got destroyed in the faceoff circle 10-21.

Listened to Bob on the stream, sounded like quite a game. Welch finally had a good outing, especially in the 3rd with all the penalties. Would be interesting to see the tape. Berglund and Chambers seem to be providing some quality leadership.

I was going to laugh about the MSU penalty train because often, especially the last couple of years, we'd be on the penalty train... but then we went on the penalty train. Thankfully we survived and I didn't see the video but man... a little less penalties guys?

After a 3 and 2 start (I was hoping for at least 4 and 1) for the Hawks, they begin league play with a single game at NU. The next 3 games (@NU, BU, @BU) should be a real good early season test for the team. Both teams are loaded with talent and skill. The Hawks will need to step up their game and limit their mistakes and penalties. One game at a time. NESN will broadcast the Saturday night game at NU at 7:00 pm.
