      From Tuesday's Sun:

      Drop the puck

It’s hard to believe, but the UMass Lowell hockey team opens the 2022-23 season in 11 days when the River Hawks will host St. Lawrence at the Tsongas Center. It’s the earliest the team has played a regular- season game in program history.

Last Saturday, at the Tsongas, the team held the first of three intra- squad scrimmages. The White team skated past the Blue team, 2-1. AIC transfer Jake Stella scored both of the White goals. Freshman Dylan Bentley tallied the Blue goal.

Twelve new players were on the ice, three transfers and nine freshmen. The lone player missing was senior Brian Chambers. The Weymouth native is still recovering from an ankle injury sustained in an NCAA Tournament loss to Denver, which went on to capture the national championship.

The River Hawks are still rounding into shape and head coach Norm Bazin isn’t even close to establishing his lineup. But the team should again be formidable. And tough to play against. The roster features 11 players who stand 6- foot-2 or taller and seven who weigh 200 or more pounds.

Personally speaking, I'll be coming right from Gillette so no pregame for me.

I didn't have my full attention to the game between ongoing stuff, the end of the UConn-Fresno State game, testing out a Roku device. My brain has been out of hockey for a little while so I've forgotten a bit about what type of game to expect.

Grigals (?) had a solid solid performance in net tonight and seems to be a solid replacement for Savory.

Defense was iffy tonight in the way of allowing odd-man rushes. Thankfully it was the first game or else those would be punished more frequently. On the other hand, its the first game those are more likely to happen. Offense looked good in the first and I kinda lost the plot/focus later on and that's my fault so I don't know how to judge the rest of the game. I feel like there's a lot of work to be done on the offensive end to get their polish but then again that's how things have been the last couple of seasons.

More to learn against Miami next week. Personally those games will be important because I play in a broomball league with a lot of Miami guys. I did think about coming home for those games but I'm dealing with some personal stuff so that's ruled out.

Thankfully everything else is hyped up in the program because I feel like these message boards are dead. Still playing with the idea that we need a discord channel or something (remembering the yahoo mailing list from long long ago) but I also know that invites drama. Maybe I have to accept I'm miles and miles away and I made that choice even if I never fully onboarded the secondary effects.

Game highlights: (144) Ice Hockey | UMass Lowell vs St. Lawrence (10/01/2022) - YouTube

Grigals locked solid and made some huge saves to earn the shutout. St Lawrence worked hard and could have easily scored 2 or 3 goals. A typical first game with lots of energy, multiple mistakes and miss passes. I would have liked to have seen more offensive pressure in the second part of the game. Overall, a good first win which is the important thing.

                  A good crowd too, 5,580.

Thought the team looked good after a very shaky early part to the 1st. Couldve scored 7 on St Lawrence and the passing looked much better in comparison to what we saw last year. Pp needs to just shoot at times instead of setting up the best play.
