I despise the shootouts and although we just won two OT games, I long for the days of full 5 on 5 OT and the days when a tie was still a tie. The transfer rules will still have to play out for a few years but as of now, i do think it favors the top tier teams at the expense of those below. Speaking of changes, I am also not in favor of turning most games into 2 1/2 to 3 hour affairs with media time outs and breaks during the periods to scrape the ice. I am a traditionalist when it comes to sports and never felt there was much wrong with the hockey I grew up adoring.
Do you think they should bring back the Rover? (I know it was before your time.)

I never liked ties either. Happy that I don’t have to wear them anymore… ;-)

        • The alumni reception for Saturday is sold out (which is weird since it's free). I didn't sign up on time. Is anyone going to this? If so, can you report back here what Dr. Schmidt and Coach Smith say? I'd really appreciate it!

Well there are a few minor concerns such as the fire code and food service demands.... ha ha

I would suggest the non fans go attend non games. my experience has been that people are either fans of hockey (usually wild about it) or they have no desire to ever see a game. There does not seem to be much of a middle ground. I think it more important to please the group that has always been there.

When i was a kid they had 4 guys with shovels scrape the ice at MSG between periods and then one guy skate behind a water wagon and lay down some fresh ice. Seemed pretty good to me then and i would probably like the same now.

                      • Our local news is reporting that RPI will be without Watson this weekend for the Mayor‘s cup. No word yet on who will be in goal. Watson sat in section 8 for one period with someone ( maybe his dad?) last Saturday. He did not look insured, but sometimes it’s hard to tell.

We can blame Shirley for Watson not being insured, ;-)

Liberty could send their Emu over if need be.

                            • This game may mean something to others for in my mind I would treat it as a pre season warm up. Play anyone who has not gotten much ice time, try out new line combinations, attempt plays that you might otherwise only do in practice, etc. And hopefully not have someone sustain an injury that would impact the rest of the season and our chance to move up in the league standings.

                              • I could not decide if this belongs here, on the recruits thread, or even the alum thread. The commitment this week of Landen Hilditch, son of Todd, made me think about it.

As far as I can determine, the only legacy to play for the RPI men's team since I entered in 1964 was Ken Kearns, Garry's son, who played one game in 1980-81. Earlier, John Magadini, who played on the 1954 championship team was the son of A.J. Magadini, Captain in 1929-30. Did I miss someone? We have had, and currently have, players whose fathers played at other schools. There have also been, and currently are, players at other schools whose fathers played for RPI.

And yes, Kyley Toye on the women's team is the daughter of Cindy Acropolis Toye. Also, two of Rick Scammel's daughters played for the women's team, one when it still was a club team and one when it was D-III.
