Since as UNH fans, we're now officially in the NCAA offseason, and the NHL trade deadline is looming tomorrow, it's not a bad time to revisit the current situation with old pal James van Riemsdyk, who'll be turning 33 in just over a month. On the good side, he's been injury free this season, and is the 3rd leading goal scorer with an abysmal Flyers team that's circling the drain, and is likely on the precipice of a major rebuild in the coming seasons. JvR is wrapping up Year 4 of a 5 year deal with Philly, and his -27 plus/minus is only "exceeded" by fellow has-been Keith Yandle, at a truly stunning -35.
This hasn't happened overnight for JvR. The two links that follow are from the same Flyers' website a year or so apart, in which his contract was deemed the club's worst (prior to 2020/2021 season), and more recently describes JvR has possibly being a target for cellar-dwellers to meet next year's salary "floor", and if not, being a prime candidate for a Flyers' buyout:

Which Flyers Players Should Be Moved Before the 2022 Trade Deadline (thehockeywriters.com)
If not for that contract, I could see JvR as an interesting possibility for a contending team that's either looking for a power play specialist on their second unit, with possible 3rd or 4th line depth otherwise. I guess I wouldn't be shocked if JvR was headed back to Toronto as a depth guy for the PP etc. given his best NHL days were there (before they started winning at least in the regular season anyway). Hard to believe he's going to be 33 - time flies, eh? Thoughts??
