However, our coaching staff seems to excel at finding underrated and overlooked recruits before they blossom. Both of these players were at the Select 17s and both had very good performances there. I hope that means they are about to take that step forward in their development
I have no idea where these guys fit in the coaches' preference list and there's always risk in projecting player development, but if the staff views them highly enough to be recruited on day one of eligibility I'm satisfied. Every year D-I schools recruit 400-500 players. In recent years they have been 60+% American. IIRC correctly the Selects camp is supposed to represent the top 150 or so players (in someone's opinion) for a given birth year. That would seem to confirm these guys are in the top 1/2 or so of the talent pool. Now let's hope they develop and enroll as planned.

Absolutely true. The art of scouting/recruiting is nothing more than trying to figure where a kid is on his development curve. In my view our coaches have done a very nice job of hunting down some kids that may be flying under the radar. These two are 2025 commits, so plenty of time to develop and mature physically. Time will tell.

The years the men's recruits are listed as committed for are not necessarily accurate.
The dates on which some of the women are listed as committing on may be considerably after the actual dates.
I am assuming that Neutral Zone regards their Star ratings as public because they often tweet them with committals.

STRENGTHS according to Neutral Zone (NZ doesn't include them for women):

Chris Heisenberg is showing that Ryan Shaw's teammate defenseman Matt Hanscom has also committed to RPI for 2025.

Hanscom was at the Select17 Festival with his Shaw.

De-commits come in all shapes and sizes. Some just don't take seriously the concept of commitment - just using school A as a place holder until they can get an offer from School B. Others may have been jerked around by the school - either unintentionally because they forecast wrong when an opening would be available or intentionally because the school didn't like the player's development. We just don't know what happened with McDonald. He may have lost faith when we didn't play. On the other hand, and I'm just guessing, the fact that he's going to a different school in a year in which he could have undoubtedly enrolled at his original commitment (unlike Ardanaz and Evans who appear to have enrolled because they could avoid UNH pushing them out an extra year) is probably a good clue. In any case, I'm going to privately hope that Ardanaz, Strom and Smolinski turn out to be better players (which is possible as the sixth round is pretty close to the crap shoot level) and I'll apply my small vindictive streak to secretly root against McDonald if I go to a game this year with my NU-alum daughter or NU grad student nephew.
probably going to happen a lot more.
