FWIW I've never used the term "us" in connection with a sports team unless I was part of that team. Player, coach, whatever ... can't even say I've used "us" for one of our kids' teams, unless I was coaching it. In my mind, there's a sanctity with being part of a team. Can't speak for 'Watcher, but as far as I'm concerned, it's OK to use "us" if you feel that strongly about it. So long as you don't mind being seen by some (i.e. me) as a yahoo homer, and I get to chide you mercilessly as such. :-D

You make it sound like using the word "them" designates an enemy. That I do find curious ... is this one of them fandangled pronoun thingies the lefties and kids ramble on about these days?!?

P.S. - just in case you ARE Blue Skies ... yes, it's your program, you get to use "us" ...

It was a great game and the Red Hawks did all they could do being out shot, out cornered (FH term) etc. nothing to be ashamed of. MI was runner up last year so they are hungry. OH...and guess who's FH team was runner up in D1 in 1986? Game was played at OD. Year before the lady laxers won the D1 title. Is this the year Durham gets a NC for a men's team... (smiley face)

Just saw your updated post. Having seen the ending live, I looks like FH is another sport that's been screwed up by video replay. Nothing ruins the spontaneity of sports by taking long breaks in play to watch video for marginal "infractions", no matter what the sport. I don't know the rules (other than the "it can't touch your foot" thing) so I'll just leave it at that. Tough ending.

FWIW dept...Dan's Red Hawks (#25) are leading (#3) Michigan 2-1 in FIELD hockey...will there be a huge upset today??? Of course ALL eyes are on Durham this weekend for the game of the century between the UNH Wildcats and UVM Catamounts. Ice hockey is also on tap for these two teams this weekend... (wink) UPDATE: Red Hawks continue to stave off the Wolverines heading into the 4th qtr still up 2-1. If the Red Hawks win it's a freaking massive upset in field hockey land!

Final update: Michigan finally breaks through to tie, and win, in the last 2 mins of the game. Controversial penalty corner at the end led to GWG for MI. (reviewed) Yep, good teams find a way to win but, it was oh so close for Dan's Red Hawks!

Ouch, so that's what it feels like to blow a 2-0 lead in an NCAA Field Hockey game! I already spoke with Fishman81 and he is adamant that Miami would have won had they played this game in Oxford!

Michigan in fact scored TWICE in the final 1:01 to come from behind and advance! That makes TWO one-goal losses to Michigan this season for Miami (the first coming in a pre-season exhibition). Miami is pretty good, #25 ranking aside. Undoubtedly, Maine would have been smoked.

I have not seen the replay of the final goal yet (scored with 0:02 on the clock), and I'm not sure I would know what I was reviewing even if I did see the replay. So, tell me Ref, what are your opinions on the goal? Did the NCAA screw Miami in the name of $$$ (seeing as how games are being played in Ann Arbor all the way through the NCAA Championship game)...?? Should I head over to the Maine thread to express my outrage?!

Okay - I've seen it and still have no idea? What was the controversy? That shot was ripped! I'm more confused about the call that drew the corner, can you explain? Seemed like innocuous defense and a soft call with two seconds left? And what is the referee implying when he rubs his arm to explain the call? Thanks.

Well, I played it back a few times; I honestly am not sure what the controversy was. Things happen pretty darn fast out there (esp at this level) and they (officials) are miked up. The GWG looked totally legit. I'd have to say the call that led to the corner? Have played it back a few times. Looks like the official is signalling "wrong side of stick" foul...which the Miami players didn't agree with as they showed him how she played it. (and I'd have to say, it looked like the defender played it legally but mind you I am not down there at that level soooo...) I should have kept the volume on so that I could hear the Miami coach as no one was really calling the game (and you could hear his commentary which led me to mute it) If you find out I'd love to know myself!! It was obviously reviewed so that call stands.

I guess when you have the right to review you might as well use it as the Red Hawk coaching staff did. And Chuck to my knowledge it's only in the level of this play (tournament) that reviews are used. (also in the Olympic games). Michigan is lucky today. Despite dominating most of the game (I did miss the first qtr because I forgot it was on) they found a way to win it.

Awesome huh! That's what I love about this game. Anyhoo, if you are interested in the end of it Dan, click here and watch the ensuing play which leads to the corner/ GWG. Once the ball finally gets into the striking circle the corner is called and that 'wrong side of stick' signal is given. You can verify that's the call because the Miami player comes over and shows the official what side was used kind of thing. Anyhoo, that is what I believe was the call. Wonder what could have happened if they went to OT? Didn't see enough of Miami's attack to know as I missed their two goals and they didn't get much circle time the rest of the game. But here's what's cool even in their loss; they gained another year of NCAA D1 credibility, and as you say, played very competitively against a ranked opponent (MI). I'll pay attention to the Red Hawks next season....

Us = Red Sox, them = Yankees, no? It does explain why I've yet to receive any of my World Series rings though.
