Pretty goal to win it but at least we came back from a 3-1 deficit and made it interesting. You hit OT and.anything could happen.

I'm glad like I have said on a few occasions that the frosh got some great experience...scoring 25 of our 75 RS goals..

I don't think a Wednesday night with BC on break and bad weather outside is a good barometer. These HE tournament games never draw well.

Well I am highly doubtful that there will be a coaching change in the near future...if at all. And personally seeing that team and how that loss affected them reminds me that they hold a bigger place in the big scheme .of things than any coach....

I dunno...just different tonight. Souza is the last thing this fan is thinking about prob because I do not have.much power in that.

On another note it was pointed out on Twitter that Tyler Wards hattie was the first hattie in a HE qtr final game since Kevin Goumas had one against NU. In 2014. Threw my hat on that too.

A sad end to the, hopefully, end of an error. Per the NESN announcer, UNH was 0-16 when losing after 2 periods. How is that for in-game adjustments and rallying the troops? As a wise coach once said, "you are what your record says you are."

We can all feel sad and sorry for the players at the end of a season. We are all human and want good outcomes. The lack of optimism for what has been happening on the ice takes nothing away from all of the hard work, sacrifice and toil these players give throughout a season. I always tip my cap to these young men who juggle so much to chase a dream and an education.

Agreed, also as someone noted Jerry York called a timeout in the OT period and shortly after BC potted the game winner. Using his timeout to coach his team, maybe he spotted a weakness. The lack of in game adjustment has spilled over from Umile (at least towards the end, I wasn't around for the "good times"). The Souza era has mostly felt like trying to find a bigger and bigger hammer to hit the oversized square peg that is the style he wants to play. When your roster turns over every four years you are going to get variations in player types and skillsets. This is especially true if you are UNH and don't get the pick of the litter. A good coach is going to find the second tier guys and build a system of play around them.

Hard to adjust in-game when in your 10 years of recruiting you have:
* not recruited a single player who averaged a point a game during his career;
* only recruited 7 players who averaged half a point a game during his career;
* not recruited a single player who made the HE All-Rookie team
* recruited only one player to make second team HE
* recruited only two players to make third team HE

Sometimes its the Jimmies and Joes, not the Xs and Os

Great post ...was hard to see Mike Robison cope with the loss and also the end of his UNH career...took him a minute to get off his knees. Quite the contrast with BC celebrating 10 feet away and our boys gathering around the net consoling him and one another. The handshake seemed heartfelt between quite a few of both teams...

Sigh..when is it going to be our turn...is it ever going to be?

At this point any road to recovery (being close to top 6 in HE) under Souza is incredibly hard.
You only get one chance to make an impression, and it was plain from his first year that his plan was not getting any traction. You can make a statement or splash, but Souza came out of the gate to "remake the team" asleep. There was no urgency of the sort you see with new coaches bringing in their guys. Instead, it took six months to get a local Austin Prep kid, MacAdams. After that, another two months before spotting Corson Green. Then Wyse, but also filling out the the roster with a "favor" to one of his cronies, Joe Sacco. (Like the "favor" to Bob Sweeney). Then another local Austin Prep kid Verrier. His first year and a half was the following:

Essentially, you see 1) heavily reliant upon a very small word of mouth (Austin Prep), and 2) No recruiting wins.
As to picking through the bargain bin, he chose three defensemen who never played at UNH (two of which could not even make DIII schools), a forward who could not make DIII. Not one had a significant competing offer (Crookshank was just starting to get Denver interested).

The next big date is August 1st, where sophomores can commit. UNH used to be a player in the Northeast market. Not under Souza, where he had little credibility when hired (only four years as an assistant with weak results) has completely lost any ability to get any of the top 10 Mass recruits. Shane Eiserman's brother, one of the top players in the country, is a pipe-dream. (In August, UNH could not even parlay Jackson Pierson's success into a commitment from his brother Cooper Pierson, a B level recruit). Souza's linemate John Sadowski's kid will commit in August, and without any info, would bet that its not UNH. UNH women's team player Emily Rickwood's brother is the second leading scorer in the BCHL, but he passed on UNH for Clarkson (Potsdam!). The top BCHL prospect and scorer is a 16 year old who grew up in NH while his dad was assistant coach for the women's team. He is going to U.Conn.

And that, in a shell, is why I'm dismayed. Where in the past recruiting used to have the prospect of an occasional exciting get, that is gone. I'm resigned to UNH never getting another good player. And without recruiting, you are doomed to failure or hoping that your eye for a bargain is better than the others (something your track record hasn't shown).

The team next year is...questionable. Although UNH only scored 76 goals, the top 3 scorers who had 30 of those goals (Ward/Pierson/Engars) leave. Of the freshmen, Devlin is a candidate to regress, based on his prior track record. Here's what I had a couple of weeks ago.

For reference, of what I thought might be the first line, neither Margel nor Blaisdell were dressed last night!! The team will need huge contributions from freshmen.
Relying upon a talented but freshman goalie will be tough.

This makes Souza a lame duck with a hard chance of earning an extension, especially with a new boss coming in. Just a thought. Austin Prep (see above) is moving to the Prep leagues. I wonder if they might be in the market for a high profile leader. It would offer a very nice chance to rehab a reputation for a future gig (see Tim Whitehead), or just be a nice gig at which he could mentor hockey players from Boston.

I'm no recruiting genius obviously but have heard Souza on more than one occasion say you can find a great player in your own backyard etc. Sure...there are great players in the area but they don't come here? Like you said 'Watcher we can't get legacy skaters ( Scott Morrows son comes to mind...we could use a player like him...)

But then we have had and will have a cpuple of international skaters and saw a great post about John Evans last nite from the WK Warriors Twitter feed....

Where the heck was Blaisdell and Margel last night...and one last thing. I couldn't see Jerry York coach from our seats but he is normally very involved with his players on the bench. I did however have a good look at our bench...not so much from our HC but did see it from Stewey fwiw dept
