I agree about the offense. I would like to see Zack Kaiser start putting the puck into the net.

I just hope everyone comes back healthy and they can avoid any Covid issues. BC and UConn had to postpone games in the past couple of weeks. More and more pro teams are being impacted. Cornell just closed down their campus.

      • Let's also hope we're allowed to continue to go to the home games in person.

Good stuff here. On the "grass isn't always greener" comment, not all these guys chose to leave for team purposes I'm guessing. Baxter was a grad student and maybe RPI had more of what he was looking for in regards to his future. List and Osik weren't going to play here anyway.

Years ago when the NCAA Hockey Rules Committee first started discussing changing overtime there were several threads created (see Rule's Committee Recommends 4 on 4 OT, RPI to adjust for OT losses and Rule Changes: Who got screwed and wants a fix? thread and the Women's Forum NCAA Committee Recommends Change To Overtime In 2016-17 thread). At the time I created a quick spreadsheet showing the number of regular season games; OT games; OT games won; and OT games lost. I have updated it with the past four seasons:

Season RS games OT games won tied % OT games % won % tied
                  1975-76 582 65 46 19 11.17% 70.77% 29.23% includes 2 multiple OT games counted as ties

                  Average 16103 2749 1240 1509 17.07% 45.11% 54.89%

As can be seen, in 2018-19 the number of OT games that ended in a win rose to almost 50%, but fell back in 2019-20. So far under the current 3x3 overtime rules the number of wins has vs ties has flipped and now over 60% of OT games end with a win. You can argue whether or not 3x3 is real hockey, or fun to watch or whatever, but to date it has done what it was intended to do.

I never saw a need to change from the old 10 minute overtimes, but that ship sailed decades ago. As for 3x3, I think it is terrible and not real hockey. If it is why not play all 60 minutes 3x3? Or at the very least, all postseason overtimes 3x3? If you can't support 3x3 play for either of these situations than you really don't have a very strong argument for changing the rules for regulation OT.

Edit: 1988-89 was the last season with 10 minute overtimes, except for CCHA league games which used 5 minute overtimes. The percentage of overtime games with a winner in those 10 minute OTs (60.87%) was nearly the same as the percentage of 5 minute 3x3 overtimes the past 2 seasons (61.54%).

As can be seen, 3x3 this season is at its lowest percentage of wins, but about the same as the win percentage for college games.

You're welcome. In fact I hadn't realized that the discussions here were that long ago. I also edited my post to explain the 1988-89 season records with and without CCHA games. I find it interesting that the 10 minute overtimes had about the same percentage of games won in OT as the 5 minute 3x3 overtime game do. So, in my opinion they should drop the 3x3 and go back to 10 minute 5x5 OTs.

In 2019-20 leagues had the option of a second 3x3 overtime period and four leagues used it (Atlantic Hockey, B1G, NCHC and WCHA). Here are the overtime results split out between those four leagues and the two (Hockey East, ECAC) that didn't use it:

2019-20 OT games won lost % won % tied
                        w 3x3 89 27 62 30.34% 69.66%
                        w/o 3x3 110 47 63 42.73% 57.27%

It appears that more of the teams with the 3x3 option played for the tie vs the win in the first overtime, whether for league points, pairwise or both, then those teams without the option. Once they got the second overtime they then played for the win:

                        5x5 3x3 won tied % to 3x3 % won % tied
                        2019-20 89 62 31 31 69.66% 50.00% 50.00%

                            • A nice win by the Hawks. As usual they made it interesting with those 3rd period penalties. Hopefully Lucas Condotta and Brian Chambers will be back soon. Lucas took what looked like a knee on knee hit in the first UVM game.

                              • St Lawrence posts their highlights on YouTube but does not show anything else. So frustrating to see schools do that.
Lowell always shows all the goals in their highlights of the game.
