Next year is looking increasingly tough. Colin Graf, Dylan Anhorn, and Gabriel Seger all entered the transfer portal. They were three of the team's top four scorers this past season.

Graf went to QU, Anhorn to SCSU and TBD on Seger.

And the top scorer, Brandon Estes, entered the portal because Union has no grad program. He later turned pro.

A good hire to me. Checks a lot of boxes of what should have been sought. He's been an assistant/associate head coach at Clarkson for several years and also has been a head coach in juniors, including some time as Vecchione's coach. Pretty much everyone reacting on Twitter has nothing but good things to say about him. Union, by all accounts, did well here.

The building is almost 50 years old and not in the greatest condition. At this point, it's not worth sinking a lot of money into. They need to start fresh with a new facility.

I wonder how other schools that are renters in newer rinks view that experience. I would think Union would still need to hold most practices at Messa/Achilles. It would be interesting to hear the perspectives of Siena and UAlbany hoop fans on how on-campus versus civic center has worked for each program.

Union College is continuing to negotiate a long-term lease for the site, said Harris, and officials are trying to negotiate an agreement "that’s fair and fits within our budget." https://www.timesunion.com/news/arti...r-17074751.php

Hopefully that plan comes to completion. Sounds like a good opportunity for you guys.
Certainly exciting news to have a big chunk of taxpayer seed money to fund a new rink I do question the somewhat nebulous "$40-50 million" price tag...which doesn't seem to be based on any hard numbers, especially given skyrocketing inflation and building material costs. Two regional rinks for comparison: SHU is underway on a 4,400 seat arena that is reported to have had a $70 mil price tag when the contracts were signed and Colgate's 1965 rink - which more closely compares to the proposed new Union rink - holds 2,200 and was built 6 years ago for $38 million. I'd bet a Morrette's steak sandwich that the price tag in today's money will be north of $70 mil.

aka would have been Union’s best returning forward.. and Anhorn is now in the transfer portal (aka U’s best retuning defenseman).. lucky that Murphy already transferred once so at least may have a goalie next season.

Whoever becomes coach better be a fantastic recruiter, because the cupboard is bare. This new transfer policy is only making the rich richer & the poor poorer. Obvious why Dumais wants to stay at Qpac. Might as well rename the Cleary Cup the Pecknold Legacy Trophy.

If accurate, definitely a good group of candidates. DeMichael is a fabulous recruiter and coached under Carvel at SLU so he knows the ECAC. Marcou has experience at Harvard & Brown, so knows the league too, though not from the scholarship end. Beal not only knows Union but has been under Leaman in a scholarship program, which are 3 stars in his favor. Todd has built programs from scratch at the DIII level and has experience recruiting with scholarships at DI. And Christiansen has coached at pro level, which some people consider a plus. Article says interviewing 5 and including Ronan would be 6, so not sure if this list is accurate, but my feeling is admin may want a “clean slate” and DeMichael & Beal could be front runners if interested.

According to a new story by Ken Schott, you can cross Tapp and Dumais off the list to replace Bennett. Some names floated in the article are Ronan, Alex Todd, Joel Beal, Doug Christiansen, UMass associate head coach Jared DeMichael and Harvard assistant coach James Marcou.

To me, the best fit out of that group would be Beal. He knows Union, and has been biding his time behind a Division I bench for 10 years now. I also am intrigued by Marcou and DeMichael as other younger coaches on the way up - if Union can find another up and comer like Leaman was in 2003, that would be a home run.

Christiansen has zero experience running a team at the collegiate level - to me, he would be the worst fit of that group. Union needs someone with Division I coaching experience who knows how to recruit, has experience with scholarships and transfers, and is the kind of personality to energize a fanbase and donors to help get a new rink built.

Todd's mostly been a Division III guy outside a few years as an assistant at Omaha in the middle of the last decade. Something tells me if Ronan was going to be the guy, he would have been formally hired by now.
