  • So someone correct me if I’m wrong but here are the two scenarios 3 points over the weekend clinches 5th. 3 points more than Cornell clinches 4th after that we finish somewhere between 5-8

    • Starting Will Friend tonight as goaltender tells you all you need to know about Colgate coach Don Vaughan.

      • Do you disagree with it Iowa? He was a senior (based upon the students who I have encountered in sec 11 a good kid). I would have hated to lose the game because of it but if that is the type of kid he is he it is great that Vaughn started him. In a game he knew was important to put kids ahead of the team shows he cares about those invoked in the team. Kudos coach Vaughn

        • Frankly, a tough situation and, yes, it does show that DV is a class act...I think for most of us (and that includes yours truly) DV has been a great representative and asset to our alma mater...these are not easy issues sometimes...and I wonder why several normally dressed D-men did not suit up last night...COVID a possibility, but after watching some of the Clarkson goals on Friday night he may have simply wanted to make a very strong statement re: responsible play in our own zone...well got the needed win and, I believe, we're clinched no worse than 6th place (5th place looks very doable, although home ice is perhaps out of reach)...

          • well, Princeton has 3 games left so it is not impossible that they could jump ahead of us; doubtful, but possible...

I took it as a class act by DV, from him I wouldn't expect anything else, let Will play some. Next weekend's games are even more important, he probably wouldn't have a chance to play. Kudos !

They would have to beat us, then Cornell, then Harvard on Sunday night. Tough task.

                • Red, since you asked… I wouldn’t have done it, but I have respect for him for doing it (as I also value loyalty). He took a calculated risk, knowing he would either be a hero or a zero depending on the final outcome. After 29 seasons, he knew one goal could have won the game for Saint Lawrence, but it appears that he had total confidence in his entire team.

In the bigger picture, I truly appreciate Colgate’s emphasis on academics and athletics (which was very apparent on Senior Night). And I expect excellence in both academics and athletics.
Thus, I expect Colgate to make it to the 4-team ECAC tourney in Lake Placid at least once every three years. I expect Colgate to be invited to the 16-team NCAA tournament once every four or five years at a minimum. And I expect Colgate to make it to the NCAA Frozen Four once every fifteen years or so. If they don’t meet those expectations, then somebody else is eating our lunch (in my opinion). And I don’t like other people eating my lunch.

As a side note, I heard that Jerry Quill was in the Sullivan Suite last night. And I heard that a line mate of Don Vaughan’s from his playing days at SLU was also in the Suite. If that was true, then clearly it was an important night for our coach and his friends. I am thrilled with the outcome.

                  • Gate went to the NCAA's every five years for awhile, 1981, 1985, 1990, 1995 and 2000. We "might" have gone in 2005, my memory's failing me . Last appearance was 2014, lost to Ferris St. in Cinncinnati 1-0. I think we beat Ferris twice that year one game a 4-0 shutout.

                    • Thanks, Shabby. That brought back a memory as I was at that Cincinnati Regional in 2014, having driven down from my home in Knoxville, Iowa. And, just looking at that season in review, we lost (7-4) and won (1-0) against Ferris State at home, then beat them again at the Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis (3-0) before going down to them 1-0 in Cinci. I was also at Cinci for the Frozen Four in 1996 when a rink maintenance worker ruined the ice by hitting the coolant pipe before the first semifinal game.

                        Colgate's NCAA appearances were in 1981, 1990, 2000, 2005, and 2014.

We made it to the ECAC Championship Weekend in 1995, 1999 (back then it was a "final five"), 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015 - 11 times in a 21 season timespan - but haven't been back since. The graduating class of 2019 was the first time since 1994 that a graduating class never made it to that weekend.

                          • Many "ifs" this weekend ! We need to pick up three points on Cornell to finish fourth for a bye. We need Q-Pac to beat Cornell(doable), Princeton to beat Cornell(who knows which Cornell team shows up), otherwise we need to beat Princeton and Q-Pac(a tougher out). This assumes we beat Princeton.
If any of the scenarios above happen, and we pick up three points somehow on Cornell, we own the tiebreaker with Cornell.
If none of the scenarios work out for us, good chance we finish fifth, play Yale or Dartmouth at home, win that initial series, then we play Cornell,# four vs # five us, in Ithaca.
If, we finish fourth and get the bye, and Cornell finishes fifth and Cornell wins against Yale or Dartmouth, we play Cornell best of three in Hamilton, that is what I want !
Of course if we don't beat Princeton friday night all of the above are "moot" points.

                            • The last six teams are separated by four points, I guess we could wind up playing any one of them, not just Yale or Dartmouth if we finish fifth. There are fourty four scenarios.

                              • We can't finish lower than 7th. Earning 3 points this weekend guarantees we finish no lower than 5th. And to finish 4th, we need to gain 3 points on Cornell over 2 games.

Sadly, it looks like there's a widespread rain/snow storm happening in the Northeast on Friday morning. That's too bad - Hobey Baker Rink is the one ECAC rink I've never visited and I really wanted to make the trip down there on Friday! Guess I'll watch on ESPN+ instead.
