Jarmond is a finalist for the UCLA job. Disappointing.
Should not be a surprise though. Just further confirmation that BC is a stepping stone job, not a destination job. Assuming things go well for Hafley, how long do you think he'll be at BC? Four years? Five years top.

BC needs to embrace that stepping stone label. Jarmond has made some very good hires in women's sports like hoops and volleyball (not sure if he hired lacrosse coach) and luring Hafley from Ohio State is promising. If Hafley does well here and then moves on, that's ok. The next guy will have a good situation to step into.

That’s a really bad formula for long term success. BC is now in a P5 conference with 30 million per year payout and growing. They have to retain their top coaches just like Minnesota with PJ Fleck, same boat. It’s impossible to hire one great coach after another.
Re: BC Eagles 2020-21 - in memory of Steve Gerrish
Absolutely not a bad formula. It can be done if you hire the right people. Xavier hoops come to mind. If you don't embrace BC being a stepping stone job get used to mediocrity forever. Might as well bring back Daz.

I've been saying this for years. Stop hoping that you're going to get a Tom Coughlin type and keep him at BC for 20 years. It's never going to happen. Be happy that you had him for 3, had some success, and then find the next one. Keep the next one for 3-5 years, and then when he leaves, find the next one after him.

On top of that, if you are able to become a consistent winning program using that philosophy you actually increase the chances of a good coach wanting to stick around long-term. Just keep improving the brand.

I don't foresee that happening because I think the potential of the program is ultimately capped by geography alone. Lack of a large pool of high end recruits in your their natural hinterlands, lack of proximity to the high end recruiting areas, and weather are all negative factors that nothing can be done to change. The nearest state to BC geographically that would be considered a rich recruiting ground for football is New Jersey and even that is not an adjacent state.
I also think the rise of Clemson to an elite level powerhouse has hurt. I think it makes it difficult for all ACC schools because the conference appears non-competitive to recruits, but it's even worse for schools like BC that are unfortunate enough to be in Clemson's division.

HAFLEY is recruiting almost every state. If you want to be successful you have to first believe you can be successful. HAFLEY gets it and he is having success. Cycling through coaches is a hit or miss proposition. It’s difficult to find very good football coaches. That’s the weakness in the “embrace the stepping stone “ approach. The answer is to retain your top coaches and build your program into a national brand. Think Jim Calhoun at UConn or Frank Beamer at VT. HAFLEY could do that at BC. BC is already well respected nationally. With the Fish Field House they finally can hold their own facility wise. 30 million in ACC revenue and growing really helps with coaches salaries and the recruiting budget all of which have grown substantially with the hiring of Hafley. The future is very bright for BC football.
Re: BC Eagles 2020-21 - in memory of Steve Gerrish
Ideally yes, BC gets to a point where they retain guys rather than them moving on to bigger things but that doesn't happen overnight. Hafley was definitely an inspiring hire. Now it's time to find another AD like Jarmond and eventually upgrade basketball facilities and hire a good coach.

Lost me at “BC is well respected nationally” - that is simply not accurate at all.

He COULD...but does he not jump at the first chance for a bigger job? I think if he succeeds, he is out of BC quickly.
Re: BC Eagles 2020-21 - in memory of Steve Gerrish
Hafley was/is pretty highly regarded. A much more inspiring hire than Steve Addazio was. Definitely a sign BC has stepped up the commitment to football--that and the practice facility. It's obviously not a premier job but it's a good job.
Now, the same commitment needs to be made to hoops. They are far behind there.
