  • Here is Todd Burgess's highlight tape. Hands down the most fun I had making so far and that is because Todd was so excited when I asked him his choice of music. As many know Todd will be using his final year of eligibility to pursue his dreams of a National Championship at Minnesota State-Mankato. While it will be bittersweet no longer seeing him in an Engineer sweater, Todd definitely enjoyed his time in Troy. You can see it with the passion he has after pretty much any goal that he scores. Definitely the most fun I've had making a highlight tape. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMxdpAWD84w&t=5s
Please let me know in the comments what you all think of the video and how I can make it better.

      Mahshie - Ashbrook - Lacka
      Herrman - Jerry - Digrande

      Kjellberg - Hallbauer
      Babichuk - Ferner
      Johnson - Sertti
      Klee

      Savory
      Marshall
      Calvaruso

First thing to note is that we do not have as much at RW as LW. There is not a RW on the roster that I would want playing on the top line right now. I put Sellar there, but he never played on his off-side at Dartmouth. Second thing to note is putting Dubinsky at LW. He played both LW and C in juniors, and he was our worst center in the faceoff dot last year at .461. Part of the reason to move him there was due to Beaton's arrival. Beaton is a natural center who will thrive. I think moving Beaton to the wing would be a misuse of his talents. I expect Lacka to take a step forward, and I have him with Ashbrook and Mahshie. Mahshie played well with Ashbrook and Gornall at the beginning of the season, and he's a good player who unfortunately had to miss the majority of the season with his injury. Lacka struggled this year, but he has obvious natural talent and had a good freshman season. His best games this season were when he was playing with a center who could really skate north and south (Dubinsky, Ashbrook). Putting him with Ashbrook would be a good move in my opinion. I think Gagnon might be a little high, but I think he fits better on that line than Lacka does. Two players not on here who I could see cracking the lineup frequently and making an impact are Bowman and Schreifels. Bowman had a great end to his freshman season but like Lacka, he had trouble cracking the lineup this season. He could definitely end up in the lineup. Schreifels has obvious offensive talent and can put the puck in the net, but there is a logjam on the LW as I said earlier. I think Mahshie is probably better suited right now, but Schreifels could easily end up there and play a lot.

For our defense, the 1st and 2nd pairings are essentially interchangeable at the top. You could definitely put the Babichuk - Ferner pairing over Kjellberg - Hallbauer. I chose those pairings because I think Kjellberg fits much better with Hallbauer than Babichuk does. Sertti is D1 ready and is great both ways. He also played on his off-side in juniors, which is why I have him with Johnson. Overall, our d-core and defense as a whole will be the strength of this team.
Interesting analysis. I think Smith really values defense in his centers and Dubinsky is very strong in that regard so I doubt he will be moved to wing. Although I think all of our centers play a two-way game (with the caveat that I've never seen Beaton play), if the weakness is on the right side I see it as more likely one of our right handed centers moves there so Sellar can play on his natural side. As you noted Bowman is another option and I like his shot, but he almost seemed to be in the dog house last season so it will be interesting to see if he can earn more ice time. My other option is Hallbauer, who was strong offensively but a bit of a defensive liability as a freshman before really stepping up his d-game last season (possibly to the detriment of his offensive production), so I think that will only happen if no one distinguishes himself among the forwards.

I agree with rpi82 that Dubinsky will probably remain a center. Of the returning forwards, you have left off Lee and Bowman. Of the frosh -- Brackett, Schreifels, and McIsaac. We could see one more of the frosh at the expense of Herrman or DiGrande, but I can't argue with your choices. As to defensemen, we pick the same seven. My only questions are about what role will Helsen have. He sat our a year, and we really don't know how good he us.

        • Unless you guys know something i don't there's still a player we haven't discussed (well, two if you count Brett Miller). Dylan Davies is a 2001 so, if we are bringing him in, that tells me Smith really likes his talent and doesn't want to lose him. Admittedly he had an odd season last year - not scoring a point until about 30 games in. That's hard to do as even a player without offensive skills will pick up an occasional point on the secondary assist or just by having something bounce right to get a goal or primary assist. Sometimes younger players are told to play a simpler, defensive minded game and I suspect that was the case with Davies. He'll also be relatively young in college but I imagine Smith will want to get him some periodic ice time to develop his skills and confidence in anticipation of having a defensive stalwart in his upper class years. It will be interesting to see how coach handles so much depth on the back line. That's something I haven't said in a long time.

Davies is a really interesting player. He's a big-bodied, mobile defender with size and reach. He definitely is more of a stay-at-home defenseman and won't do much offensively. But so is Mason Klee and he still had like 12 points in the USHL whereas Davies had 2 points the entire season. It's also tough to know how his offense will translate. Klee only had 4 points this year and is clearly a defensive defenseman. But Kjellberg had 5 points the entire season in the USHL in nearly 60 games, then he came here and more than doubles that despite playing less than half the number of games. I’m not worried about Davies at all. He’s athletic, strong, really smart and aware defensively, and he has good vision and passing when breaking out of the d-zone. I’m not expecting him to produce at all offensively, but that’s fine. That's not really his skill set, and we have a lot of really good defensemen who will limit his ice time anyways.

I agree that Dubinsky is very strong defensively and that Smith values that in his centers. With regards to Beaton, he was outstanding defensively in the games I watched of his. He's a super well-rounded player who will be strong both ways. i really want him to stay at center for this reason, but I also like our current 4 centers. I'm curious to see what Smith decides to do there. As for Hallbauer, I don't think there's any chance at all he moves to forward. Smith has said a couple times that he is expecting him and Ferner to step up their games on the ride side of the defense.

I agree that no being able to embed tweets is very poor. It just doesn't look right when I post the tweet link and its contents as the post before yours.

                      Good for Mat Harris.
