It's weird. You go to school and learn about some of the heavy hitters: The Black Death, the 1918 Influenza outbreak, etc, but you never think you're going to be living through the same sort of thing.

Even then, with the Black Death, it was largely a sanitary thing, and with the 1918 Spanish Flu, maybe if they had the tech today, some 17+million people wouldn't have died. But here we are in 2020 facing the same sort of pandemic.

Hopefully the state's plants and other facilities around the country and start cranking out testing kits, ventilators, protection gear for the frontline workers, etc sooner rather than later, along with flattening the curve. They've already started human tests on possible vaccines, but it can take a year until any conclusive data can come out of it.

I think we're going to be in for a long year, year and a half easy. Though one study from the UK showed that if we shelter for a month or two at a time, flatten the curve, things can kind of go back to normal for a few months before having to button down the hatches again. That's probably the best scenario we're going to see, unless some major breakthrough happens.

But since this is a Lakers thread, not the Covid-19 thread, without getting into who should be coming in next year, what does is the expectation for the team next year, assuming there is a season?

It’s a long time ago now, but I remember when people would talk about the Lakers having success in Olympics years. Since they moved the Games to 2021, it will awaken the anchor and the Lakers will be back!

Certainly it has become kind of a nightmare, but for a bit of perspective here is a chart from the CDC showing annual illnesses/deaths from the flu in the US over the past 9 years. The past couple of years don't have finalized counts, only the CDC's best estimates.

I'm cautiously optimistic. We have 4 forwards coming back who scored over 20 points this season. Goal tending should be solid. If Bengstsson and/or Gervais are really good skaters (ala Nordqvist), our D corps should be deeper/better. The team finished this season playing very good hockey for the most part.

The second half the of the season was decent and a lot more enjoyable to watch then the first half of the season was.

except that it's not the flu. And the data we have on Covid cases is garbage due to the lack of testing kits, or lack of hospitals doing their job and testing everyone they need to.

Good thing we didn't have a pandemic during the Lakers glory years when Anzalone and Jackson was here. Imagine if this hit during the middle of the 1987-88 championship year and the rest of the season got canceled.

No it's not the flu; it's more contagious than the flu. But the number of cases and deaths being reported still far lag those of the flu. I'm not saying it isn't serious; it is, but when almost all we hear from the media are the Covid numbers with no context, I don't think much of the job they are doing. For the record, I'm in the age group for which Covid is most serious, but I'm not going to live in fear of it. The medical consensus still seems to be that most people that get Covid will recover from it at home. The fact that the number of Covid cases being reported is lower than the number that actually exists also means that the death rated from Covid is being over reported. I think the medical community has acknowledged that; it's just not sure yet what an accurate figure for the death rate is.

Anyone who down plays the danger of this virus is either out of touch with reality or you did have the virus and it cooked your brain. How many in here want to take an all paid vacation to northern Italy ? The government in 1918 tried to down play the dangers of the Spanish flu and that virus ended up killing millions .

How about we blame the virus on missing the NCAAs from 1997-2020?

The victory bell would probably be worth ringing when this pandemic is over and life is back to normal.

Team awards announced. Not surprisingly (like Cuglietta last year), Humitz was named MVP. Also Max finished 4th in the NCAA his 22 goals.

I came across this short video on Twitter today. It shows Clayton Beddoes OT goal in the 94 semifinal against Harvard. Beddoes has always been one of my all time favorite Lakers.

I'm assuming there will be no off-season Laker Hockey Talk shows until the pandemic is over.
