  • This article was posted over on the Covid thread in the Cafe. Very interesting read which I highly recommend regarding why hockey is likely the riskiest of all the sports to try and play if you aren't doing a true bubble like the NHL did.

    • Interesting info today... First, Mankato will be playing Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSoE) this coming Saturday and Sunday in Mankato. So, a top 5 DI team vs a middle of the pack DIII team. Will be interesting to say the least.

Next, heard a rumor today that many of the teams do not want to travel to Fairbanks to play. And, in response to that, NMU has offered to host UAF the second half of the season. Apparently UAF would stay at an extended stay type hotel and just do their studies online. Would play their home games and practice at Marquette. Have you heard anything about this davyd?

If they do this, they should stay in Marquette for the long haul and join the new CCHA as UAUP. Lol

          • Havent heard anything in Fairbanks either, but consider the fact that Forrest Karr was the AD at UAF at one time...

Sadly, that is actually a fact.

                • Let's say that Fairbanks offered to come to Marquette every year at Thanksgiving, and play, lets say 6 league games as home games there over the next 3 weeks, meaning there would only be half the teams going north each year. Would that be enough to get an invite to the CCHA?

That is very interesting they could also get UAH to do something similar. I still think they say no, but it would get some people thinking.

One trip to Alaska a year was not the problem. Multiple trips per year combined with the very public financials for those two teams, something needed to change. No amount of "we'll forgo asking you to come here" is going to lead to an invite to a league. Fixing the financial problems long term is the only way to an invite anywhere. Huntsville seems to be on the right track, although I would put Fairbanks ahead of them as the next to get an invite solely because the trip to Alaska opens up two more non-conference games.

                      • IMO, the three UA* teams should stay as indies with the NCAA requiring a conference- and team-rotation visiting AK and AL, amortizing the cost of travel...

sure, it does not create many rivalries since teams would take years to play them again but... well, at least it would be financially viable and do wonders for a better PWR.

a trip to AK is fun as hell... as a hockey player from the lower 48 knowing that in your four/five years at whatever school would include a trip there would be awesome! just like wearing sandals when going to huntsville. all three places can be destinations... polar bears in place, rockets on the other...

Looks like UAH is offering up $25,000 per series to offset some of the travel costs in their talks with the CCHA and Atlantic Hockey.

I believe a lot of their pledged funding relies on gaining conference membership. I'm thinking the CCHA is going to be a rough road to membership for them, being they would make an odd number of teams, and have eliminated their program twice in recent seasons. Even the promise of new funding is going to take some convincing they are in it to compete.

                              • The I-500 snowmobile race in Sault Ste. Marie got cancelled.

NMU and LSSU had moved one of their games away from that weekend to avoid hotel problems for Northern, and that was one of the games during their current pause. In all likelihood, that moves back to become a two game weekend series now.
