We have a 2 point lead over Minnesota who is hosting Wisconsin for a pair. I'm nervous about this. I just do not see any way Minnesota does not sweep Wisconsin and taking the 6 points. The leprechaun always seems to play over their heads against us. Considering they swept us in Yost back in November I have a bad feeling.
Not only do we get home ice, we also get a weekend break. So we really need to take this one.

    • A weekend break would be awesome.

Agreed we likely need to win out, which is a tough ask for playing at South Bend. The Badgers did take 2 points from the Gophs with an OT win when they met earlier @MN, so there could be help there, but we shouldn't count on it.

      • So much for our Olympians being missed. They played pretty poorly all night. It's as if they forgot how college hockey is played, especially a well coached team like that. Given the break aways we let happen, that game could have been a whole lot worse.

Hmmm, the Gophers didn't have that problem. Olympian Ben Meyers with the hap trick leading the way to a 5-0 shutout over Wisconsin. Should the Gophers win tomorrow evening they will clinch the BIG Conference trophy no matter how Michigan fares in their rematch with the Irish.

          • Well, we had our chance. And generally blew it.

            • Lousy weekend of hockey. We weren't able to watch the games, but maybe I'm glad we didn't. Listened to some of the radio broadcast, but it's hard to tell with homer broadcasters what's really going on.

Stinks that we finish 2nd. Get to host Sparty this weekend, then should we win and Notre Lame win....we get a rematch at Yost the following week.

              • And we get to move on. Three games to get the team back to what should be normal. Seems a little long.

But my favorite part of the game last night was Beecher getting a goal (2) with the goalie in the net. It's been a while since he scored a non empty net goal.

                • I don't understand how Portillo gets a shut out and 2 assists and isn't named 1st star of the game

                  • Notre Dame got past Wisconsin in 3 games and will be in Ann Arbor on Saturday. 6:30 start....don't be late

Penn State knocked out Ohio State in 3, likely ending their season as the *eyes drop to 15 in the pairwise, leaving the B1G with 3 teams that should make the tourney (UM x2 and ND) with PSU having to win out.

Here's hoping our Wolverines fare better this weekend than they did in South Bend. Scoring early is always critical against a Jeff Jackson coached defense.

                    • Well, it would be nice to actually beat all of our opponents once. ND has me concerned.

But playing this past weekend seems to have helped the play. So we will see.

Indeed, though I would have been ok with PSU doing the honor against to goofs this weekend so we could have had another game in Yost.

                          • Someone needs to explain that penalty.

Here's what I can can find:
Contact to the head. Any time a player makes direct contact with the head or neck of an opponent it is a major penalty and game misconduct at a minimum. The responsibility lies with the player making the hit to avoid contact with the head and neck area of an opposing player.
That wasn't minor, that was a major.

edit- the NCAA rule book does have "incidental contact to the head"- but the original contact has to start someplace other than the head. In that situation, it sure looked like the head was hit first.

                            • Another major called as a minor. What did Mel do to the officiating committee???

That was a textbook checking from behind- not once did the face turn away from the boards on that hit. Never, not even close, nada. Checking from behind.

That was called on us for a major so many times this season, that it was becoming sick how it was so casually called. But on us, we've now had contact to the head and checking from behind both result in minors. What bs.

                              • Finally, they get a call right. That would be a hard one to justify to the B1G comish to not call for a major.
