It never ceases to amaze me the PR spin that somehow manages to attach itself to Luce Canaan ...

Very happy about that. Field hockey has been pretty damned good since the days of Noriko (sp?) Kariya, which has been a while.

The Warden's only girl was a a good player; she went to the NYS Sectionals a few times. That fed my interest in the sport.

Once I got interested in the game, we went to see Maine on the road. There were plenty of good seats available every time :-), but it was fun to see Maine excel at something. The women won for us every time.

We'll tune in to the NCAA's, for sure.

            GOOOOOO BLUE!!!!

              • Real quick: field hockey v. Miami is at 2 tomorrow (Wednesday) and is a free stream via Sidearm from goblackbears.com. First time in a while (since football/womens' hoops) that Maine has had a dog in the National hunt.

                Goooooo BLUE!

Game is at Miami in Oxford OH, Miami won 11 games, Maine won 15. Maine ranked higher than Miami. Wonder why game is at Miami.
                  Might have a fighting chance?

                  • If someone had told us 20 or so years ago that a UMaine in-season thread would be focusing on Women's Field Hockey, and a similar in-season UNH thread would be focusing on Men's Soccer, I think we would have found that a little hard to believe ...

Because the folks at the NC$$ don't want to schlep all the way to eastern Maine. Plus, Alexa tells me the temperature in Orono is 41 and in Miami it's 65.

I think the real answer is that the winner will be bussing from Ohio to Michigan for Saturday's game instead of flying.

Then play the game on a neutral field at Michigan rather than having Miami host it but designate Maine as the higher seed on paper (which is what the NC$$ has done)

There are some entire D-3 sports that would like to subscribe to your newsletter. But honestly, I think the math is:

                                At Miami:

Maine wins: MAINE 2 flights, 1 drive
Maine loses: MAINE 2 flights, MIAMI 2 drives (to MI and back)

                                At Maine:

Maine wins: MIAMI 2 flights, MAINE 2 flights
Miami wins: MIAMI 2 flights, 2 drives (to MI and back)

                                At Michigan:

Maine wins: MAINE 2 flights, MIAMI 2 drives
Miami wins: MAINE 2 flights, MIAMI 2 drives

There was a chance the NCAA could save on one way bus fare if Maine won at Miami. That's worth messing with bracket integrity if you are the NCAA and have to pay millions in administrative salaries.
