  • LSSU Lakers 2021 off-season thread

Let's hope this off-season thread lasts only into early October and not into mid November like it did last year.

Lakers will be losing quite a bit. Next season will be pretty tough to match this past season's success.

It will be interesting to see how many of the seniors sign pro contracts, or underclassmen for that matter although I hope we don't lose any of those to the pros.

Nice to see Mankato get the monkey off their back and advance to the Frozen Four.

The Lakers have a new recruit for next season. Timo Bakos, a center from Germany who played in the USHL in the 2019-20 season, then back in Germany this past season. Originally committed to UNH.

Pete Veillette has entered the transfer portal. He's getting his degree from LSSU this Spring and this will give him the opportunity to go somewhere else as a grad transfer and work on a Masters.

UMass wins the NCAA championship. This is the 5th time the Lakers lost to the eventual champion in the NCAA tournament. Also lost to RPI (1985), Harvard (1989), Maine (1993) and Boston University (1995).

Calder ended up finishing 5th in the NCAA in goal scoring which marks the 3rd year in a row a Laker finished in the top 5 in the NCAA in total goals. Cuglietta had the most 2 years ago and Humitz finished 4th a year ago.

I know it's for the best for him and his future and totally understandable, but it's going to be tough to see him in another uniform. He was such a big part of Laker Hockey's resurgence. I wish him well.

I definitely undersold UMass. They have something great going on there for sure. That's a really interesting stat. It means that 8 times of the 11 the Lakers have been in the tournament, they have either won it all or faced the team that won it all.

With your other stat, Whitten has a lot to sell to players now. Come to Lake State, be top 5 in scoring, get a chance to win conference titles, and play in the NCAA tourney. For a lot of the time, he was selling hope and banners from long ago. Now he's got some nice recent accomplishments, and hopefully the Lakers can continue to make their climb back into being a more regular contender.

Lakers also have the 11th most wins in college hockey the past three years which was mentioned on the last Laker Hockey Show.

Any idea what the non-conference schedule will look like next year? Assuming we are close to normal by the time the season starts.

Too early to tell. I think the coaches convention is in early May this year, and is a virtual one. They usually come up with some non-conference scheduling agreements there. There may also be some agreements already in place that haven't been publicized yet. It could be that they will try and go with the same non-conference schedule that was supposed to occur this past season, but that may not work for some schools in some instances. We'll see.

I think Timo Bakos is a replacement for Pete.

Some updates from the transfer portal. Will Riedell is now going to Ohio State instead of Vermont. Lukas Kaelble and Alex Ambrosio have entered the portal. All are grad transfer situations.
