"We will play a style that is a puck-possession game, an up-tempo style ... It will rely on speed and toughness. I’m sure these players can
make that adjustment very easily. We’re going to make the Tsongas a tough place to get points for other teams." -UML Coach Norm Bazin

edit: In the end Joey Diamond was not worth what he brought in terms of an "edge". He's going to have to produce on the score sheet for every dumb move he makes. On the other hand, if he's a world class mouth that could help out.Last edited by Patman; 04-14-2022, 07:33 PM.BS UML '04, PhD UConn '09

The USHL phase II draft was today and Jak Vaarwerk was taken #1 overall by Des Moines.
Here is the list of recruits drafted today:
Rd 1 #1 Des Moines Jak Vaarwerk
Rd 3 #39 Youngstown Daniil Dolzhenko
Rd 12 #181 Sioux City Jaiden Moriello
First, this is great news about Jak. He finished as the 2nd highest scoring '03 in the NAHL, and he's having a great playoff run so far (5 GP 4-4-8).
Since he was taken #1, I'm thinking he'll be playing for Des Moines next season even though the Jamestown press release said he was coming to Lowell in 2022-23.
Danill was also drafted fairly high. All of Lowell's recruits will likely be on a USHL team except for Jaiden who is expected to play in the BCHL.
The pipeline might not be huge, but I would say recruiting has improved. I like that Norm has been seeking out USHL caliber players over CCHL/AJHL/etc.

Vaarwerk will definitely not be part of this year's incoming class. The Lowell Sun article that covers this news said all three drafted players are expected for 2023-2024 season.Monty

I was curious so decided to look up how the first pick in the USHL Phase 2 Draft has done the past few years (skipping 2021 since the player isn't in the NCAAs yet). While we have had players taken in the First Phase, I believe this is the highest pick Lowell has ever committed.
2020 Owen Gallatin, D (Minn Duluth). Just finished his freshman year with a 2-15-17 in 42 games played.
2019 Sean Farrell, F (Harvard). Also just finished his freshman year with a 10-18-28 in 24 games played.
2018 Trevor Janicke, F (Notre Dame). Finished his junior season with a 15-9-24 in 40 games. His NCAA career shows 106 games played, 27-20-47.
2017 Graham Slaggert, F (Notre Dame). His collegiate career just ended with 27-42-69 in 143 games. He finished the season in the AHL after the Irish season ended this past season.
2016 Matt Hellickson, D (Notre Dame). His collegiate career shows a 13-39-52 in 146 games. He played in the AHL last year, but finished the season in the ECHL.
Some pretty reputable programs getting the #1 pick, so hopefully a good sign. Of course, the 2015 first pick went to Vermont ... so who knows?Monty

In this article in the Post-Journal, some pretty good comments about Vaarwerk by his coach.
“He made it look really easy. He’s a heck of a hockey player. I would say Jak Vaarwerk is the best hockey player I’ve coached in my eight years in the NAHL,” Coombs said. “He’s the best hockey player the NAHL has seen in my eight years. He’s an awesome kid and a great teammate. I love him to death. He’s a treat to coach.”“Hopefully I’ll watch Jak grow into hopefully cashing a paycheck,” Coombs added. “I think the ability is there and he has the passion to match.”Monty

Sioux City and UMass Lowell recruit Owen Fowler win the United States Hockey League's Clark Cup with an overtime win over Madison.
Dillan Bentley and the New Mexico Wolves were eliminated by the New Jersey Titans (2 games to 1) in double overtime tonight. The Titans scored late in the 3rd period to send the game into overtime and then got the game winner on the PP in the second overtime. It was the second night in a row that the Wolves lost in overtime. Dillan was held scoreless in the 3-game series.
