Re: WCHA 2019-20 season: We Can Do Better Than Two Bids and a First Round Exit
I want to reiterate how disgusted and disappointed I am that the cowardly 7 are ditching the other 3 teams. I get the issues, and I think that we should have found a way to deal with them other than pulling the plug on them. I think it will result in at least one or maybe two dropping D1 hockey and i'm very unhappy about it. I think the 7 should have sucked it up and found a way to help those other schools get better and so what if it costs more. I blame BG in particular.
So looking at the past three seasons (since the WCHA went to a 3 point-per-win system) the fourth place team finished the regular season with the following point totals:
I'm eliminating the current bottom 4 from contention for home ice in the first round (Lake State is 9 points out of 4th with two extra games played).
Five of the top 6 teams have 12 conference games remaining, so that's 36 points available (Alaska has only 10/30 available). Let's assume that with 42 already, Minnesota State will be one of the teams at home in the first round. The other five teams currently have these point totals:
What's the magic number going to be to get at least that #4 spot? What will it take to get the even more coveted 2nd spot (and home ice for the second round)?
Really going to be interesting. The conference has sorta split, with 6 teams I'd call pretty decent to really good, and 4 that are struggling. Tech and BGSU have the most favorable schedule in that regard, with 6 games against the "strugglers," but Tech and BGSU also have a little ground to make up to catch BSU or NMU. The good news for the others is that they have a lot of games against their fellow contenders. I'll go with 48 as the cutoff, but still not feeling real sure about who the 4 home teams will be.
I do think it will be closer to the high point of 50 than the low because of the bottom. I stated on Chasing MacNaughton that I thought BSU wouldn't host a playoff so its going to need to be 48 or higher for that to happen most likely. If MTU doesn't show up this weekend, my prediction is likely wrong already.
what's the magic number going to be to get at least that #4 spot? What will it take to get the even more coveted 2nd spot (and home ice for the second round)?

it's a tall order to ask NMU to beat Cornell at Ithaca. They are big, strong, fast and skilled.
I think they are equal to any team in the country.

Seems to me, even two teams is somewhat optimistic at this point. On the plus side, NMU's SOS should go up with games against Cornell, MSU and Tech left.
Question for anyone smarter than me: how much is that loss to UAH hurting NMU's PWR right now?
