  • Very interesting commit tweeted by NBC5's Marshall Kramsky earlier - Kazakhstan U20 international Andrei Buyalsky, currently at Dubuque in the USHL.

What's interesting...a) he might be the first Kazakh born and trained player to play D1 college (that bit's unconfirmed but I'm pretty sure that's the case), and b) he's played in the Kazakh league and the VHL (tier 2 Russia), which raises my eyebrow some. I assume the coaching staff did their homework re: eligibility, but it's very curious.

6'3, 2000-born, seems to be a bit more of a playmaker type.

    • Very interesting...they're scouring all corners of the hockey playing earth it seems. I saw this article: https://www.dubuquefightingsaints.co...e/show/1145117

It says he just showed up to their team in mid-December and already has 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists) in 12 games and has spurred his junior team to a 7-3 record in their last 10 games. He has a Youtube channel of his highlights looks like the speedy playmaker type for sure but those kind of guys are needed https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClh...-DddEXg/videos

One thing I have also noticed from the Chris Heisenberg list is that size seems to be a priority too. Only 2 guys under 6-feet tall...now we all know size isn't everyhing because the greatest player in program history was 5-foot-nothing but I would say the Cats of recent years had a lot of 5-10 types who were pretty redundant so if you are adding size and skill that is a good start to build a foundation.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's about damn time that we started working the international market. I think we already have more recruits from outside North America under Woodcroft than we did under Sneddon (and that's even if you give Sneddon Whim Stalberg, who is here under Woodcroft but was brought in by Sneddon; I'm not sure who brought in Vitolins because I'd genuinely never seen him associated with UVM until he was announced). And VT is a small market without a huge base to pull from so you have to try and make it up somewhere.

Also helps that Woodcroft has connections via his work for the Swedish NT, and Wiedler was Lang's right-hand man at AIC and if you look at how their rosters were built, they went all over too - the team that beat St. Cloud in the NCAAs had players from *nine* different countries.

Interesting that he's draft eligible even at age 20 though I guess I don't really know the full rules for how someone is or is not draft eligible. Maybe if he keeps up his hot start he gets picked this summer but it's cool to see he was kind of an unknown even though he played in the WJC a few years back but has gotten eyes on him since arriving. Hopefully he and the others translate when they are Cats next fall.

Just hoping for some good showings vs BU this weekend because I imagine the long layoff there might be some game rust.

                • BU is really good, we're rebuilding and are coming off a month off. 1-0 defeat is not a bad result, IMO

I agree. Not a bad effort against a team like BU.

                    • Also, if anyone cares about my constant women's team updates, they put together a pretty comprehensive 4-0 ***-kicking on the road against BU tonight. Jessie McPherson has 3 shutouts in her first 4 college starts

                          • A very disappointing game after such a good game Friday. Carriere should have been brought in as Harmon let some in that should have been stopped. Players were not hustling to the puck and they don't take enough shots. That being said, BU is a very good team, but we played even with them Friday so we can compete.

On the announcer side, I really want her to succeed. I know basketball is her thing, but if your are going to do play by play of hockey you have to know more about the sport. Knowing the difference in a goalie blocking a shot versus covering it, knowing the difference in offside and icing, etc. You need to be paying attention to the officials to know what the call is. And don't apologize so much. I really want her to succeed so I hope she watches and listens to other announcers and watches more hockey from that perspective.

Damian is the best color guy that is used, Jerry is good, but Damian is the best. Of course having a father-in-law that was an great NHL announcer probably helps.

I just want to see the CATS improve and hopefully win a few games.

                            • Carriere should have started. 29 saves on 30 shots last night, YTD says...0.93(?) GAA, .971(!!!) save percentage. I know he’s had limited action, but he should be the starter until he proves he shouldn’t be the starter. Cats were tired tonight; to be expected. I still like the direction of the team.

We were very fortunate/spoiled to have Michael Lehr as the play-by-play announcer. He left some very big shoes to fill.
