True, this doesn't have to be this difficult. The host school just needs to be responsible to secure a site. Heck, even Marquette (NMU) has two venues in town.

So some teams will then get a second bye? That doesn't make sense to me. With 16 teams there shouldn't be any byes.

+1. Gonna be worse today. Choosing a team to root for is like choosing between Cholera and The Plague. Go UMass.

Manchester's ice was good for about 5 minutes each period. Had we had a system where one rink may have to play 4 games the ice would be useless by the end of the third game. Whatever you'd be watching, it would be hard to call it ice hockey.

4 games in one day at one site? Asking for trouble there. Especially if you are concerned with ice quality.

I think it would be better to get the season complete before the men's bb tourney starts the weekend before selection Sunday. Then they don't get totally overrun by bb. I don't mind hockey in Sept and they don't need to take 3-4 weeks off for the Christmas break.

Format change....the first round is home sites, play best of 3 or a 2 game total goal series like the good old days. The final 8 playdown the following weekend at one site, quarters are Friday, semi's Saturday and final Monday night. You could have the final 8 at the same site every year, like they do for baseball, that makes it really easy for scheduling and planning. And why not have the women's FF at the same site at the same time? They could do semi's Saturday and the final Sunday.

The ice quality was also an issue at the women's ff last weekend. It was especially bad for the MN Cornell game.

A very legitimate concern, particularly if the format calls for a best 2 of 3 series. But my format calls for a 1 game, single elimination format for the campus site games.

This weekend, games are being played on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. There is no reason that we couldn't continue to use all three of those days. In other words, the each host team would need to have its rink available Friday OR Saturday OR Sunday.

I guess there could still be an issue at multi-purpose buildings like Mankato. But note that during the B1G playoffs at Ohio State, we hosted a high school tournament for several days, but still had the hockey rink ready to go for a single elimination game on Sunday of the same weekend.

Holding 1 date open doesn't strike me as an extreme hardship. But if some still go ahead and book other events, one option would be to have a Plan B in place for hosting at a nearby facility. Not every school would be able to do that, of course. But many, if not most, have some options.

Last, but not least, note that Women's D-1 Hockey had their first round games at campus sites a couple of weeks ago, and no one experienced any difficulties. The fact that UW & MN have facilities dedicated to Women's Hockey simplified the task, of course. But fitting in one more game isn't really as challenging as it's being made to sound.

That's really what it comes down to. If another format would net them more cash they would do it. If you want change either the coaches need to change their tine or you root for this format to completely bomb out (UND stops bidding, etc.)

What? Every year people complain about the regional format (including me). Every year people make suggestions but all of them have logistical problems. The NCAA makes $600,000 in pure profit (plus 80% of anything the venue makes) from the four regionals. If any of the ideas had merit and the NCAA could increase its profit margin they would be implemented. Instead we have friends and family crowds.

There is no good system. This is the one that makes the NCAA the most money.
