So maybe all the players on the winningest team in a decade this past season were Souza’s recruits when he was Associate Coach and now that Souza is Head Coach his assistants have dropped the ball, er puck?

The assistants are recruiters also. McCloskey is an example of a asst coach who could recruit better talent and had a nice pipeline in the BCHL. If a 15-10 record is the best you've had in ten years then you might wanna try a different approach.

That was my point about the assistants not doing their recruiting job the past six years since MS7 became head coach. My sense is that head coaches do not recruit, other than maybe meeting the potential recruits on campus.

From your lips to God's ear, my friend. Unfortunately, AD Rich f/k/a SB couldn't withstand the MS7 "charm offensive" of the last 12 plus months, so "same old, same old" seems to be the prevailing wisdom in Durham for at least another couple of seasons. Credit where credit is due, MS7 did pull out his best season when all the chips were on the table, but when "best" doesn't include Boston OR an NCAA bid, it's not good enough.

Posting his best record last season should at least have given him an improved platform for recruiting - traditional and/or portal - but so far I'm not seeing that. Since his extension, the best you can say is MS7 & crew have been treading water, reacting to the unexpected departure of the entire goalie team, which reeks of PPP in and of itself. As they say, failing to prepare is preparing to fail. All at a time when MS7 should be able to sell a story of "most improved team in the best conference in D-1 hockey". And even if this next season exceeds the last one ... what's it all going to add up to, what's it gonna mean, if two years from now, he hasn't capitalized on a two year jump, and the program ends up back in the lowest HEA quadrant yet again?!?

Maybe I'm being harsh here, but if this next recruiting season doesn't see some major victories, I'm not sure anything of note will have happened to justify staying put in the mediocre middle, which is what it's starting to look like ...

But I thought that we were 20-15-1 last season? Maybe the different approach pertains to recruiting our goalies from the portal?

My bad last year was 20-15-1 still not flattering for a ten year period. The Grout kid coming in is a highly regarded goalie in his age group so kudos for that pick. Jayden Connors is also a nice prospect at defense. Overall though UNH is not a destination for most young skilled talented players.

I think you could be on to something. However in taking a closer look, our good friend Mr. Hellsten, did not fare very well against our top four HE teams. I believe he was 2 and 9. Surprising given how most of us viewed him. Still a great pick up who contributed to the first good year in a while.

                • What is the status of the proposed renovations to the Whittemore? Sousa said the commitment to the renovations has already been helpful to recruiting. I don't think any dirt has been moved yet. Is it fully funded? Can somebody provide info?

I think that we were 4-8 against the top four HEA teams, with Muz beating BU and Hellsten beating UMass and Maine twice, with Hellsten taking the eight losses (so, 3-8-0). Does anyone think that Muz might have converted any of those eight losses to wins? I don’t.

I still think that the coming season will go as Jared da Whale goes.

The smile reminds me somewhat of the Yoken’s neon blue whale sign in front of their restaurants on Rte 1 in Portsmouth and Danvers.

But more research suggests that this brown whale with white trim is known as “Fudgie the Whale,” an ice cream cake made by Carvel, an ice cream company founded in Hartsdale, New York, by Tom Carvel in 1929. Maybe this ice cream cake should be sold at the Whitt this season?

Glad you did the extra research, Snives. And to answer your question, I would voice a resounding YES!!

Many thanks for your fine roster summary, C-H-C. I did not realize that DiMatteo (3.75) was ranked higher than Whale (3.25j by Neutral Zone.
