Except in Wisconsin they actually sell that and call it Jager. Some of them oddly find it delicious.

With last night's loss at DU, combined with Mankato's sweep of UAA, Michigan Tech has clinched the WCHA autobid!

Would the captain please come forward to accept the empty cup of Top Ramen awarded to the WCHA basement champion.

...what? You threw the cup away after you were done? Pablo, you are why we can't have nice things.

Looks like the captain will have to go dumpster diving to claim his team's prize.

Also, you need to take the hot dog out of retirement - it could serve us very well in the BFB.

It's probably too late to suggest a venue but..

For the Western Regional, why not Sunmart Centennial Arena in Fargo, ND?

Yes, it's 85 miles from a major DI market and the town is somewhat hockey oriented, but.... the arena is so far out of the way that, even if it is heavily marketed, no one will find the arena unless they live next to it, have been there before, own a GPS, or actually want to take the time to MapQuest it.

The ice is just ok. There's only about 20-30 parking spots (unless the team busses wish to park, in which case there's about 10).

It's very well hidden in a commercial park off the beaten path.

There is only bleachers on one side of the rink and there's MAYBE 10 rows. The seats are in a bit better repair than others offered, but it makes up for it in having locker rooms that are indistinguishable from middle school gym locker rooms.

That place looks like one of those double wide trailers community colleges get and put up in their parking lots when they run out of classrooms.

                20. Princeton

Mercyhurst, Air Force, Canisius & Princeton are all eliminated from consideration as they have LP BELOW .425

Conference autobids (assuming standings remain unchanged): Conn, Clarkson, MTU, Niagara, West Mich & Providence.

                Tournament field becomes:

                1. Conn
                2. AIC
                3. Clarkson
                4. Holy Cross
                5. BGSU
                6. Bentley
                7. Army
                8. MTU
                9. Niagara
                10. Dartmouth
                11. Harvard
                12. Brown
                13. Ala-Hunts
                14. West Mich
                15. Rob Morris
                16. Providence

Starting with #1, place the top four seeds in the regional furthust from home:
                #1 Conn goes to Idaho
#2 AIC goes to UP Michigan
                #3 Clarkson goes to Mass
#4 Holy Cross goes to upstate NY

Keep seeding intact thru the #2 seeds:
#5 BGSU goes to Holy Cross' bracket
#6 Bentley goes to Clarkson's bracket
#7 Army goes to AIC's bracket
#8 MTU goes to Conn's bracket

                #3 seeds matched up appropriately:
#9 Niagara goes to Conn's bracket to play #8 MTU
#10 Dartmouth goes to AIC's bracket to play #7 Army
#11 Harvard goes to Clarkson's bracket to play #6 Bentley
#12 Brown goes to Holy Cross' bracket to play #5 BG

Round uot the field with the #4 seeds:
#13 Ala-Hunts goes to upstate NY to play #4 Holy Cross
#14 West Michigan goes to Mass to play #3 Clarkson
#15 Robert Morris goes to upstate NY to play #2 AIC
#16 Providence goes to Idaho to play #1 Conn

No first round matchups between conference mates, good!

Attendance problems? The committee is concerned that people may attend the Mass regional as it's so close to Harvard and Bentley. That problem is easily solved by swapping the 2 & 3 seeds from that region with those originally sent to Idaho.

Here's the brackets as we see them today:

                Moscow ID
                U Conn
                Bentley
                Harvard
                Providence

                Laurium MI
                AIC
                Army
                Dartmouth
                Robt Morris

                Saugus MA
                Clarkson
                MTU
                Niagara
                West Michigan

                Massena NY
                Holy Cross
                Bowling Green
                Brown
                Alab-Huntsville

It's hard for me to choose anything other than the #1 seeds to make the Futile Four.

AIC and UConn, to me, are givens.

I could see UAH, WMU, and Brown putting in a weak showing to try to shore up the final two spots.

Holy Cross' biggest enemy is that they've shown in the past the tendency to louse things by winning at the wrong time.

Bentley has the toughest track of all of those I feel could go to the Futile Four.

Harvard won't make it. They'll pretty much be a won and done. So will Princeton.

The hamsters that power our computer are recovered from their recent illness, so we can crunch the numbers for this week's version of: BF Bracketology

                    Here's a look at last week's brackets:

                    Moscow ID
                    1. UConn
                    2. Bentley
                    3. Harvard
                    4. Providence

                    Laurium MI
                    1. AIC
                    2. Army
                    3. Dartmouth
                    4. Robt Morris

                    Saugus MA
                    1. Clarkson
                    2. MTU
                    3. Niagara
                    4. West Michigan

                    Massena NY
                    1. Holy Cross
                    2. Bowling Green
                    3. Brown
                    4. Alab-Huntsville

According to Freddies Arbitrary Ranking of Team that Suck (FARTS), here are the TWITs (Teams With Inadequate Talent):
                    1. AIC (AH autobid)
                    2. UConn
                    3. Bentley
                    4. Holy Cross
                    5. Clarkson (ECAC autobid)
                    6. Army
                    7. Mercyhurst
                    8. Bowling Green
                    9. Harvard
                    10. Brown
                    11. Michigan Tech (WCHA autobid)
                    12. Canisius
                    13. Air Force
                    14. Dartmouth
                    15. Robert Morris
                    16. Sacred Heart
                    17. Niagara (CHA autobid)
                    18. Alabama-Huntsville
                    19. Providence (HEA autobid)
                    20. Princeton
                    21. Western Michigan (CCHA autobid)
                    22. Alaska-Anchorage

By rule, we eliminate anybody with a LP (losing percentage) below .575, regardless of their WOS (weakness of schedule). This eliminates: Mercyhurst, Canisius, Air Force, Sacred Heart and Princeton.

Here is the projected tournament field, as of now (last weeks ranking):
                    1. AIC (2)
                    2. UConn (1)
                    3. Bentley (6)
                    4. Holy Cross (4)
                    5. Clarkson (3)
                    6. Army (7)
                    7. Bowling Green (5)
                    8. Harvard (11)
                    9. Brown (12)
                    10. Michigan Tech (8)
                    11. Dartmouth (10)
                    12. Robert Morris (15)
                    13. Niagara (9)
                    14. Alabama-Huntsville (13)
                    15. Providence (16)
                    16. Western Michigan (14)
                    ****BUBBLE*******
                    17. Alaska-Anchorage (NR)

                    Conference breakdown: Atlantic 5, ECAC 4, CHA 3, CCHA 2, HEA 1, WCHA 1

First we assign the #1 seeds to the region that forces them to travel furthest:
#1 AIC goes to Moscow ID
#2 UConn goes to Laurium MI
#3 Bentley goes to Massena NY
#4 Holy Cross goes to Saugus MA

Next we assign the #2 seeds so that if both high seeds advance to the regional final, the pairings would be 5v4, 6v3, 7v2 and 8v1, therefore:
                    #5 Clarkson goes to Saugus
                    #6 Army goes to Massena
                    #7 BG goes to Laurium
                    #8 Harvard goes to Moscow

Now we assign the #3 seeds so that first round matchups will be 9v8, 10v7, 11v6 and 12v5, except that we want to avoid intra-conference matchups in the opening round:
#9 Brown SHOULD go to Moscow, but that would match them up against ECAC mate Harvard, so we'll send them to play #7 BG in Laurium instead.
#10 Michigan Tech then ends up facing #8 Harvard in Moscow.
#11 Dartmouth plays #6 Army in Massena
#12 Robert Morris plays #5 Clarkson in Saugus

Fill in the #4 seeds, and we should be all set to go:
#13 Niagara goes to Saugus, and will meet #4 Holy Cross
#14 Ala-Hunts goes to Massena, and will get #3 Bentley
#15 Providence goes to Laurium and will face #2 UConn
#16 West Michigan heads off to Moscow against #1 AIC.

Here's the way the brackets look now:
                    Moscow ID
                    1. AIC
                    2. Harvard
                    3. Mich Tech
                    4. West Mich

                    Laurium MI
                    1. UConn
                    2. BGSU
                    3. Brown
                    4. Providence

                    Massena NY
                    1. Bentley
                    2. Army
                    3. Dartmouth
                    4. Ala-Hunts

                    Saugus MA
                    1. Holy Cross
                    2. Clarkson
                    3. Robt Morris
                    4. Niagara

Oh oh, we've got problems! Entirely too many eastern teams in those eastern brackets. I'm afraid this is a case where bracket integrity will have to be sacrificed in order to keep the gate down. I'd like to get Holy Cross out of Saugus, but all the other #1 seeds are also very nearby. Clarkson, RMU & Niagara all eastern schools, but lengthy bus rides to Saugus, perhaps we should leave them alone. But wait, we can swap RMU & Niagara with WMU and MTU and make everbody travel further! Then we swap BG with Army to cut down attendance in Massena, I think we're all set.
                    our brackets:

                    Moscow ID
                    1. AIC
                    2. Harvard
                    3. Niagara
                    4. Rob't Morris

                    Laurium MI
                    1. UConn
                    2. Army
                    3. Brown
                    4. Providence

                    Massena NY
                    1. Bentley
                    2. Bowling Green

I'm hoping for an AIC-Bentley final.

what a great way to kill 45 minutes waiting to file my unemployment claim!

I will make it a point not to go up to Saugus for the regional (sigh, if only the original Hockeytown in Melrose MA were still around. RIP).

Question: Does the proximity of strip joints (no, not "Gentlemen's Clubs") work for or against a site? I say it is a positive as it brings fans to the area, yet keeps them from the rink(the Holy Cross fans will be conflicted). The "Golden Banana" has re-opened after many years in nearby Peabody, and the "Squire" in Revere has the potential for gunfire.

Generally speaking, the committee has always tried to steer clear from sites that have much in the way of culture or entertainment, especially those areas that attract people on vacation. This year alone, bids were rejected from Atlantic City, Lake Placid, Myrtle Beach and Breckenridge.

Our reluctance to locate in these types of areas is two-fold:
                          1. People who are considering following their team to the tournament site may see the presence of other worthwhile activities in the area as actual incentive to make the trip.
                          2. Those who chose to vacation in the area without even knowing about our event might stumble upon it by accident.

From your description, it appears unlikely that either of these establishments do much to enhance the appeal of Saugus as a vacation spot, so #2 doesn't look to be any problem.

We are, however, concerned about issue #1. Do you suppose it is likely that someone researching a possible visit to the area might see some advertising from either of these establishments? Do they have web sites? If so, can you provide links?

Of course, if these are truly sleazy dives, featuring nasty, skanky hoes with stretch marks, needle tracks and open sores we could see them as potential partners in some cross-marketing. Perhaps they could provide intermission entertainment at the rink.

Please feel free to forward any further information you may have, and we will take it under consideration.

I know the sites are all set, but as a late-comer to this awesome thread I am throwing out a few Alaska candidates for possible future futile fours.

The Polar Ice Arena in North Pole -- http://hometeamsonline.com/photos/ho...2__smaller.jpg

(It probably is too nice of a venue inside, but it certainly is in the middle of nowhere, sitting on the frozen tundra a few miles north and east of North Pole)

The Dimond Center Ice Chalet -- http://www.dimondicechalet.com/home.htm

In 1991 the rink manager died while trying to fix a freon link and many more went to the hospital. In the mall near the rink last week a person was shot and killed. So there could be multiple dangers for teams to face. The mall itself is going through hard times and an area where gangs and drug deals are reported to occur often.

Well, see first we have a mall which implies that most people can get their business done... further that there are no bars on the stores so that means they can probably do it in relative security. Also, this is likely something the whole town would come out for. I can't imagine this is in line with the goals of the tournament as rinks were selected based on their ability to be the ideal home for a rat colony. On the other hand, towns like these usually have a thriving oxycontin network and the administrators of the Futile Four may have more than a passing interest in such activities.

Awarding automatic bids to the last place teams from each conference, and eliminating teams with losing percentages below .560, gives us the field:

                                1. AIC (AH auto)
                                2. UConn

                                16. West Mich (CCHA auto)
                                17. Providence (HEA auto)

                                19. Notre Dame

Starting with the top overall seed, place the #1 seeds in the regional that forces them to travel the furthest:
#1 AIC goes west to Moscow ID
#2 UConn heads to Laurium MI
#3 Bentley is placed in Messena NY
#4 Holy Cross to Saugus MA
***Congrats to Atlantic Hockey for a clean sweep of the top seeds!

Now place the #2 seeds so that if both the top seeds advance to the regional finals, the regional final would be 1v8, 2v7, 3v6 and 4v5
#5 Army goes to the Holy Cross regional at Saugus
#6 Clarkson goes to the Bentley regional at Messena
#7 Bowling Green goes to the UConn bracket in Laurium
#8 Mich Tech goes to the AIC bracket in Moscow

Next, place the #3 seeds to get first round matchups of 8v9, 7v10, 6v11 and 5v12, but avoiding (if possible) intra-conference matchups.
#9 Brown would play #8 Mich Tech in Moscow
#10 Harvard would play #7 BG in Laurium
#11 Dartmouth would play #6 Clarkson in Messena
#12 Alabama-Huntsville would play #5 Army in Saugus

Finish the bracket by assigning #4 seeds as 1v16, 2v15, 3v14 and 4v13:
#13 Niagara heads to Saugus to play #4 Holy Cross
#14 Robert Morris is off to Messena to play #3 Bentley
#15 Western Michigan goes up to Laurium to play #2 UConn
#16 Providence travels west to Moscow against #1 AIC

                                So, here's the brackets:

                                Moscow ID
                                1. AIC
                                2. MichTech
                                3. Brown
                                4. Providence

                                Laurium MI
                                1. UConn
                                2. Bowling Green
                                3. Harvard
                                4. WestMichigan

                                Messena NY
                                1. Bentley
                                2. Clarkson
                                3. Dartmouth
                                4. Robert Morris

                                Saugus MA
                                1. HolyCross
                                2. Army
                                3. Alab-Hunts
                                4. Niagara

Again, we see the potential for attendance, ecpecially in the eastern brackets. Let's swap #2 seeds between Laurium & Messena, sending Clarkson and BG in opposite directions. Altho the trip from Kzoo to Laurium is long, we don't think its long enough, plus we dont like the idea of having both RI schools in the same bracket (they might be able to save expenses by traveling together) so we'll swap Western Michigan and Providence. The only eastern team we can swap out of Saugus is Army, so well swap them with Michigan Tech.

That leave us with these brackets:

                                Moscow ID
                                1. AIC
                                2. Army
                                3. Brown
                                4. Western Michigan

                                Laurium MI
                                1. UConn
                                2. Clarkson
                                3. Harvard
                                4. Providence

                                Messena NY
                                1. Bentley

                                Saugus MA
