In watching the replay there is no doubt that he was simply swiping at the rebound of a shot he had no idea went in. He poked McGovern square in the pad - hardly the cheap shot of the century - and that's all that anyone here said. Just clarification on further review. I don't think anyone had any issue with a penalty being assessed or Michel stepping up to defend his goalie? And no one had any issue with your in the moment, but mistaken, take. But those who didn't see the play deserved to hear about what actually occurred...

As for Michel's first penalty on Kelleher - his forearm extended straight through TK's face. Clearly unlucky, and due only to their size differential, but also clearly a penalty...

And finally, since I like to deal in facts and not anecdotal evidence - let's look at the numbers....

Maine currently averages 18.65 penalty minutes, while UNH averages merely 11 minutes per game. Now, let's remove the two ten-minute Maine penalties this weekend as they are nothing more than supplemental discipline. That leaves us with the following average penalty minutes in this weekends series...

    Maine - 17.5
    UNH - 11
Exactly. There is a reason that we are called the SMTs.

UNH also attempted to fund raise for the football scoreboard and were not as successful, at least in the timetable that they envisioned. But then, like a comet streaking toward earth, this unrestricted donation falls out of the sky and, voila, all of sudden this research librarian morphs into a rabid follower of Wildcat football and we use his money for a scoreboard. And why? Because they couldn't find anybody else.

I will remind you Chuck that when the Whit first opened they used the same scoreboards that they used at Snively. It was only after the tax cheat Kozlowski came up with the Tyco money that we got the half *** scoreboard which was the standard for, what, 15 years. These days it seems any semblance of Yankee frugality is gone at UNH. Parents and students pay and major gifts go to frivolous projects.

        Btw, now 'bout those Wildcats?
So, just because the fundraiser for the 'Tron was more successful than the fundraiser for the football scoreboard, that means spunking 25% of Mr. Morin's total donation (and *maybe* close to 30% of his unallocated donation) on the football scoreboard was "beyond the pale"? Perhaps one of the reasons the Hockey fundraiser was successful was that the cost was less than the Football fundraiser needed to raise? Not sure, but that's my fair guess. But it still sounds to me NOT that this was SO outlandish ... but rather that some of us expected Football to wait 15-20 years like Hockey did. Y'know ... just because?

I'm fully aware of the history of bringing along the Snively scoreboards to The Whitt, and the adequate-if-outdated "Tyco" scoreboard that served us until the arrival of the 'Tron. And there's arguably been nearly as much mythology created to support the so-called "need" for the 'Tron, including "the younger fans will be drawn to a more modern facility", and of course the reliable "it will help the program with its recruiting efforts". It almost sounds like we're comparing cover stories, and yeah, Football's was a Class A whopper, no doubt ... but the Hockey justifications are/were pretty lame too. At least so far, there's no evidence of a post-'Tron uptick in attendance of ANY kind, and until this week, recruiting looks like it had flat-lined. Again - maybe just to me - it sounds like we're jealous Football wasn't made to wait.

Can't we just be happy for Football and say, hey, it's great that UNH's fundraising efforts have allowed them to bring two high-visibility, long-awaited projects (i.e. arena improvement AND the major stadium upgrade from what used to be an embarrassing sub-HS craphole) to completion? With 75% of Morin's gift spent on things not connected with the Athletics department, it's not like they got stiffed on this. And there hasn't been any shortage of other upgrades on or around campus to suggest the University's academic mission has been forgotten.

Like our esteemed AD might be tempted to say these days ... "Don't worry ... be happy"!!

"This is an incredible game-changer for our program and our fans. The new video board will improve the already tremendous atmosphere inside the Whittemore Center and help us to recruit top-notch student athletes in our ultimate QUEST to win the National Championship." DU, May 2015

Capitalization mine. So, there you have it, the QUEST is a national championship, not 600 wins.

Aaahhh ... but the QUEST changed when a month or so later, Coach Umile signed the 3 year "extension" to his lifetime contract which brought along his hand-picked successor. Lest ye forget ...

I provided the link to the Courant article that broke the story, only because it's one of my all-time favorites - starting with the oh-so-precious comments from Luce Canaan where he pontificates about a personal coaching shrub - oops, scrub that - "tree", all the while bigging up his own role in the decision to ensure Souza didn't get shafted by the guy who Luce claims to have the "utmost respect for", and who cares for Souza "like a son". So reminiscent of the earnest, empty kind of vacuous content Walshy would crank out on a weekly basis before his untimely passing. At least with Walshy, you almost got the sense he wasn't serious, and was just messing with you. In Luce's case, you get the sense he's not only a true believer, but has practiced a speech on the topic of the day a half-dozen times in front of the mirror before he gives it to the outside world.

Should come as no surprise but TyK racks up another Hockey East Player of the Week Award; his second this season!

Honorable Mentions this week: Danny Tirone, Liam Blackburn
***Did not know we had not won there (Alfond) since 2012!!!

TyK and Vecchione at the top of the table in scoring stats. Just saying.

Maybe the Jumbotron was part of the Grand Bargain?

Some stats for upcoming UNH at Dartmouth game:

                                Stat: UNH; Dartmouth
                                Record: 8-6-2; 3-5-2

                                Buffalo (not NY): 3-5-2, 0.898 SV%, 2.9493 GAA, 44th
