MLive did a FOIA request and got the 2015 NCAA budget report from MSU, posted here http://media.mlive.com/news_impact/other/MSU%202015.pdf for your perusal. The payoff is at the end when they total up revenue vs expenses per sport.

In 2015, MSU made $2,102,029 in ice hockey.
In 2015, MSU spent $3,265,391 on ice hockey.

That's an operating deficit of $1,163,362 for that calendar year.

In comparison, you can also look at all the budget numbers for UM from 2015, posted here http://media.mlive.com/news_impact/o...worksheets.pdf for your perusal. It's a little harder to fish through it to find the grand total numbers, but here they are.

In 2015, UM made $2,975,157 in ice hockey.
In 2015, UM spent $3,195,977 on ice hockey.

That's an operating deficit of $220,820 for that calendar year.

You can see all the categories broken down in tables, from conference dues to coaching salaries to guarantee money paid. A very interesting comparison, and I'd like to see how some other schools compare in the ledgers.

MLive has released the numbers for WMU that they received in another FOIA request, posted here http://media.mlive.com/news_impact/other/WMU_2015.pdf for your perusal. The form is identical to the one used by MSU.

In 2015, WMU made $920,743 in ice hockey.
In 2015, WMU spent $2,264,817 on ice hockey.

That's an operating deficit of $1,344,074 for that calendar year.

Interesting. I'm still looking through Michigan's report. However, I don't see where any money from the BigTen Network is allocated to Ice Hockey & I'm not sure what category that would fall into - (Note that 100% of "Conference Distribution revenue went to Football and Basketball - is that really fair accounting?)

Program/Concession/Parking Revenue is incredibly low, averaging just over $9K/game. That's less than $5/person if 2,000 attendance per game. Does that seem reasonable?
Also, I don't see any Advertising/Royalties from Program sales? Does Michigan not sell programs at the games?

These are possible areas where they are playing a game with internal allocations to make Football & basketball look better on the revenue side. On the other hand, Hockey is the only sport getting "institutional support" at $1.5M a clip. Not sure what that is.


I've long suspected that Athletic Departments can play games with the sports if they want to. For instance, If they want to make football look better, the could choose to allocate "general" athletic contributions to the athletic department by the # of athletes (football has more so gets more revenue); but, then allocate shared costs of the athletic department by the number of sports (the expenses are evenly distributed and football takes a smaller share).

Will look at expenses later.

OK, On to Expenses, Michigan Hockey has more than 6 times the Marketing & PR costs than Football or Basketball???? I call BS.
