Good god, at least ESPN acknowledges the Stanley Cup.
Spectators and media in America may not care much, but I can assure you that the hockey world of NHL brass (GMs, Scouts, player development people) and the serious hockey media outlets (TSN, The Hockey News, etc.) and the whole country of Canada cares very much about this tournament. Huge leaps in draft status and contract offers for players are among the benefits of playing well here. There is no better place for a young hockey player to establish himself in the hockey world than the WJCs. This is the place a where a player can measure where he stands among the players in the world at this age group.

Good moves here. Keeping Kristo on the third line spreads the offensive depth of the USA lineup, and playing Campbell against the Canadians is probably the right move - he's been a little sharper than Lee and he knows more of the Canadian shooters.

Zucker (DU recruit) has moved up from being the extra forward to one of the top two lines.

4-0 Sweden after 2. If the Czechs beat Russia it leaves 3 teams at 2-2 I believe. Not sure who gets dropped there.

I believe the tiebreakers are H2H and then GD.

For a centralized list of all the games and where to watch them: http://www.myp2pforum.eu/nhl-icehock...mpionship.html

Since Finland/Czech/Russia all beat each other, I'd assume even if the Czechs beat the Russians they will be in the relegation round due to goal differential and the whooping they received from Sweden.

The Czechs will have to beat the Russians by four goals. If that happens, the Czechs would move on and the Russians would be relegated. This assumes that Finland doesn't give up six goals in the third to lose 10-0 to Sweden.

This is beginning to now change. Since the early 90's, millions of impressionable Canadian youths have been watching their country battle it out for supremacy on the word stage. TSN averages more viewers for this tourney than any others. I believe that over 3.5 million Canadians watched last year’s final. Winning a gold medal for your country is very much in vogue now in Canada and I suspect more so than even winning a Stanley Cup.

As for U.S players, at one time college hockey was everything but that time is now gone. Take a look at the composition of this year's U.S. WJC squad. Ten players on it have ties to the CHL and not the NCAA. Many many more are NTDP graduates whose sole purpose is to make the NHL and win medals for their country along the way. The NCAA is merely a way station on to bigger things. Sure the college boys would love to win a NCAA title but you can't tell me that it would mean more than a gold medal in the most prestigious armature hockey event in the world today.
Actually, if a player wins a NCAA championship at a team like MN, and then has a career ending injury, he will always be able to turn his fame into a really good paying job in MPLS, selling bonds, real estate, insurance etc, and make a very comfortable living way beyond what he could otherwise expect. If the same thing happens to a player who's claim to fame is the WJC, when he is out of hockey, he has nothing, except he may be able to get a job making coffee at the Saskatoon Tim Horton's.

The reason for the talent in the west? Because MN didn't rely on Canada.

Only if he's from Minnesoooota. Face it Hap, Minny aint the center of the hockey world....never was and I'd argue that it's not even the center of hockey in the U.S. anymore.

These kids aren't playing so they could sell insurance or bonds for some little fly by night company in MPLS, they are playing to win and advance their hockey career and their is no finer amature tournament than the one we are watching here.

                              Sweden beat Finland 7-1.
Sweden and Canada look to headed to a Gold medal rematch. Both very dominant.

The Swiss are leading Slovakia 1-0 in the 2nd period.

Interesting, with a solid win the Czechs might be able to overturn the GD tie breaker, although I'll admit it still unlikely.

After 2, the Slovaks are still behind 1-0.
