Re: Mtu @ uah 11/28-11/29 *** the inaugural wcha big southern classic turkey tussle

During the second period I was shooting down near the visiting team's entrance. Every few minutes a would hear loud cheering (not coming from the rink). I wandered back under the seating area to see what the noise was all about and found about 20 people with a TV tuned to the Alabama v Auburn football game. So as it turns out, even the people at the hockey game were not watching the game.

The guy who does the rink (or is it ring??) announcing sounds just like one of the old WWF announcers. Sorry, I don't recall his name but if you were at the game I'm sure you can help me out (Jim Ross maybe?). Tough task to fill that arena with sound with no students present (for either team as far as I could tell). He does his best to generate excitement and entertainment, but as soon as the music / announcement stopped, it got stone quiet. II could hear Mel coaching from across the rink.

Also props to the company that has the mobile cupcake truck (SugarBelle?). They sponsored all the icing calls, very clever.

The hardest part of the trip was the drive since I flew into/out of Nashville. Staying at the Embassy Suites was awesome as it's connected to the rink. Visited the US Space and Rocket Center Saturday afternoon. Might not be a great stop in February, as most of it was outdoors, but it was in the 50s this weekend so quite nice to be outside. Despite being used before my time, the Saturn V display certainly appealed to this engineer. I honestly didn't put 2 and 2 together and realize who the VBC was named for until I got to the Space Center. I guess I'll have to watch October Sky again.

UAH will certainly benefit from being a WCHA member. Last season was a low point for sure, but being a conference member is going to help them draw talent and they already look like a much stronger team than last season. They are going to have a legit shot to make the playoffs this season and they are not a sure win for any team. Both games could have gone the other way with another lucky bounce or two for UAH. Tech did control the play for the majority of both games, but UAH just kept hanging around and both games had an empty net goal. Things were much more tense than the final scores might indicate.

Overall a great trip, that I was glad I made and of course nice to see Tech pick up four points. So I guess I'll just enjoy 1st* for the time being. Although they are in first in the WCHA on paper, in theory we are chasing Mankato because they have two games in hand and currently have the tiebreaker.

Ryan, you will have to come back so I can show you some things. The PA is actually done by two people. Straight-up PA is done by the guy in the scorer's box, who sounds a lot like the guy who did all the video stuff during intermissions. God bless Brian Massey for working his tail off this weekend with no one in the building.

Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.
