  • ECAC Pick The Standings 2014-2015 Season

Hi there College Hockey Fans. It's that time again to put on your prognostication hats, get out those ouiga boards or like most of us just plain guess at how the ECAC Standings will end up next March. KnucklePuck CU is the defending champion in the contest while Old Time Hockey is the defending last place finisher. The contest is easy. Pick the ECAC Standings at the end of the 2014-15 season in order from 1-12 (no ties). Playoff seedings determine the position of the teams incase of a regular season tie. You accumulate points based on the difference squared of the position you pick for each team vs the teams actual finish. If you pick RPI first and they finish first you accumulate 0 points. If they finish 2nd, you accumulate 1 point, 3rd 4 points, 4th 9 points etc. LOWEST SCORE IS THE WINNER . You have until the puck drops on the first League Game (Union Vs RPI Oct 31 @7PM) to get your picks in.

    Tie breakers are:

Pick correctly the ECACHL Regular Season Champ.
Have the most teams in the correct order of finish.
Have the most top 6 teams in the correct order of finish.
    I will flip a coin .

You can change your picks at any time up till the drop of the puck of the first league game, however DO NOT EDIT THE ORIGINAL PICKS . Just put up a new post with your change.

OK, Here are my predictions (guesses) for the Cleary Cup, as of today on 09/14/2014, subject to change, without notice, until Oct 31 @7PM:

    1. Colgate - everyone returns - Finn earns and wins Ken Dryden Award
    2. Quinnipiac - great recruiting class and solid defense
    3. Cornell - misses Isles, needs more offense, ... always good
    4. Dartmouth - continues where they left off, returns all the producers ... new AHC helps

    5. Yale - returns mostly everyone and recruits have speed
    6. Union - younger, not as much depth - retreats for a year ... outstanding coaching staff
    7. Brown - lots of new talent ... if it can come together
    8. Harvard - better than last year ... more experience ... new AHC old HC Coach helps ... needs offense

    9. Clarkson - ?
    10. RPI - good defense but no offense, ... leadership?
    11. Princeton - rebuilding takes time but things improve
    12. St. Lawrence - lost too many key players

                  1. Rensselaer (Finished 7th)
The Engineers are a trendy pick for the top spot after turning a hot stretch run into a second-place finish. Goalie Jason Kasdorf and a solid group of skaters should have them in a good spot.

                  2. Yale (Finished 6th)
Another year, and another question about who will be in goal for the Bulldogs. All that the since-departed Jeff Malcolm did was answer that question with a national title last season.

                  3. Dartmouth (Finished 10th)
The Big Green looked like a good bet for a top-four spot until a late slump pushed them out of consideration. Lots of talent here. Health and consistency will be important.

                  4. Union Finished (Finished 1st)
It’s tough to pick against Union’s track record the last few years. The Dutchmen should be one of the league’s tougher opponents once again.

                  5. Cornell (Finished 4th)
It was a season to forget for the Big Red. Don’t bet on another sub-.500 year.

                  6. Quinnipiac (Finished 3rd)
The Bobcats might be a bit too low here, but the loss of four senior defensemen and goalie Eric Hartzell is a lot to overcome.

                  7. Brown (Finished 9th)
The Bears played well in the second half and had a nice playoff run despite numerous injuries throughout the year. If they find a goalie and get some support for Matt Lorito, look out.

                  8. St. Lawrence (Finished 8th)
Kyle Flanagan is gone, but Greg Carey and his nation-leading 28 goals are back. The Saints need some of their freshmen to step up quickly.

                  9. Colgate (Finished 2nd)
Last year’s impressive freshman class is joined by several other newcomers with the potential to make an impact. A home split with Ferris State wasn't a bad way to start the year.

                  10. Princeton (Finished 11th)
There’s talent up front, led by senior Andrew Calof, but the Tigers lost goalie Mike Condon and defenseman Michael Sdao and Eric Meland to graduation.

                  11. Harvard (Finished 12th)
The Crimson were ranked sixth in the coaches’ poll, so it should be interesting to see how the year plays out. One thing is for sure: It can’t get much worse than last season.

                  12. Clarkson (Finished 5th)
Coach Casey Jones thinks more depth and competition for playing time should lead to good things. The Golden Knights started the year off with a pair of wins at No. 20 Niagara, which was 15-0-2 at home last season.

That's what happens when your star goalie throws out his shoulder after game two.

Still wouldn't of made that big of a difference in my mind. Would've still been a middle tier team

If Kasdorf performed last year in place of Diebold the way he did his freshman year, we give up 20 fewer goals, improving our differential to +24 (104 G, 80 GA). This works out to about 5.5 more wins over our 37 games, which, depending on when they came, could have boosted us as high as second in the ECAC (or maybe instead getting us past the first round of the ECAC playoffs).

You can't just take his freshman numbers and plug it in and say 20 fewer goals which means 5.5 more wins. No non RPI fan would agree that RPI could've competed in the top 3 or 4. But yes could've made it out of the first round possibly

I'm not saying that he'd post the .935 number he had his freshman year. I'm saying that best case scenario, we post a .620 win percentage (based on pythagorean estimation) instead of the .486 we did.

I don't think Nate Owen is an RPI fan and he had us #1. 75 of the 79 posters here last season had us in the top 4, including 36 who had us in first. You yourself had us second. Your statement of "No non RPI fan would agree that RPI could've competed in the top 3 or 4." is completely biased by the gift of hindsight.

Yes it is hindsight. Everyone had you in the top 4. Most everyone also had Clarkson in the bottom 2. And certainly no one had Union winning it all. The fact of the matter is preseason rankings mean jack squat. Based on everyone watching RPI last season, we all know that even without the shoulder injury, you weren't a top 3 or 4 team. That's what I'm saying
