Anywho, a win tonight and we have the number 2 seed, which as you mentioned, is very important. I also personally would rather not play Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale, Colgate. If we are the number 2 seed we have a great shot to not have to face one of the above mentioned teams. It would be a huge advantage heading into the playoffs.
Thinking ahead, which is never a good idea. The team I don't want to play in LP is 1) Colgate and 2) Harvard and, probably 3) Yale. Those teams are the ones we would have the least speed advantage against. Don Vaughan called the Colgate win at SLU the fastest hockey game he has ever seen. Then again, we owe Colgate so bring 'em on.

I'm glad that Harvard alum's spawn lace 'em up in Canton. It's only fair considering the talent SLU alums have spread around the league in Nick and Tim Lappin, Spiro Goulakos and Brendan Gallagher for starters. Let's home Nick and Tim have monster nights tonight.
9/11/01 - Stewie & Pelch, you are missed by the SLU Family.

    • [QUOTE=critsports;6105715]I had always known that Gunnar Hughes father (George) played at Harvard..........guess that provides some of the impetus for his great results against them. /QUOTE]

The Hughes Brothers were the stars of the ECAC in the late 70's. Both of them played games at Appleton. In fact, I remember saying on air things like "next week the Skating Saints take on the Hughes Brothers at Harvard" Both George Jr.and Gunnar always favorite my tweets when I've mentioned the connection. And they have both publicly copped to playing a little bit harder against Harvard. George Jr. scored an OT winner at Harvard his senior year. Gunnar has absolutely shredded the Crimson this year. And, I also understand from sources that unlike a good many hockey scholarship parents at SLU, the Hughes' family has been very good about stepping up to help St. Lawrence.

You may get your wish. If you plow through this site, http://playoffstatus.com/ecachockey/ecacstandings.html you'll see that 1. Cornell is most likely to finish in 7th place. 2. SLU has a 90% lock on 2nd even before tonight. So if the seeds hold, Cornell is the team we'd be most likely to play.

I'd add Clarkson to your list of teams I'd like to avoid in round 2, just on the principal that if anything can happen, anything is more likely to happen in a Clarkson series.

And a Harvard side note. Right now (2:30 ET), SLU Squash is taking on Harvard in the semi-finals of the College Squash Association National Championships at Trinity.

SLU either actually recruited George Sr. or wanted to and lost out to Harvard. I remember a conversation with Leon Abbott about it and how much he would have meant to SLU if we could have gotten him to come here.

Last time we swept Harvard and Dartmouth? I'm thinking it must have been a while.

Wow, what a weekend that was! If someone would have told me we would be sitting alone in 2nd place, having clinched that spot, with 1 week to go in the regular season, I would have laughed so hard it would have ruptured a spleen ... This is one of my favorite teams ever at SLU. They play with so much passion and energy and they just get the job done, night in and night out! What a joy it has been to watch them all play ... Here's hoping they can continue on this ride and make some noise in the post season ... Way to go Saints!!!

Wondering if ECAC's handing of Cleary Cup to Qpac last night strikes anyone as either a bit premature, lazy or...disrespectful of certain team that could still lay claim to a share.
Guessing they didn't want to have to drive cup to boston/Hanover next weekend.

                            From the local paper here:

True, although it seems the ECAC can take away the trophy. At least temporarily. When the photos on the ice and in the Quinnipiac locker room were finished on Saturday, league commissioner Steve Hagwell packed up the Cup and drove it back to his office in Albany, New York.

That’s because St. Lawrence is still mathematically alive and can earn a share of the title with two wins coupled with two Bobcats losses next weekend. If that scenario occurs, the Saints would be named co-champions and presented with the Cup in another ceremony, despite the fact that Quinnipiac swept the regular season series.

According to league by-laws, tiebreakers are used only to determine the top seed in the league tournament, which Quinnipiac (20-8-4, 15-2-3) has clinched. On Thursday, Hagwell explained to Jack McDonald, Quinnipiac’s athletic director, that there was a chance the Bobcats would only have the Cup on loan for about an hour.

It’s a bizarre maneuver, one that makes more sense had the top two teams split the regular season. Alas, the league prefers two trophy presentations rather than none, even if it means awarding a Cup and immediately taking it back.
                            Quinnipiac Bobcats

What's weird is they don't have a better plan for it! If teams tie in points then it makes perfect sense to have co-winners because it is based on the season not just H2H which gives you the # 1 seed. I like it...this way everyone has something to play for....except the bottom four and they have pride.
