THN column that mentions this rumor as well as Canisius' new rink.
The news of this partnership comes at a coincidental time, as Twitter was abuzz on the weekend with rumors of the University of Illinois joining the new Big Ten hockey conference in the future. As it turned out, the “big announcement” revolved around new uniforms for the school’s club team, but bringing Division I hockey back to Illinois is long overdue.Last edited by Ralph Baer; 08-01-2013, 07:04 AM.

Rhode island actually studied the feasibility of upgrading when Boss was built. They spent time, at least informally, going around to a number of AHA schools including UConn, Holy Cross and I think Bentley collecting information on costs, attendance scheduling and so forth. A friend's kid was a grad student there at the time and worked on the study. there is some thought that St Anselms will move up to take UConn's old spot in AHA when the Huskies go to Hockey East.

Here is an article from two days ago quoting Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas.
Not exactly the words of an athletic director about to announce a new varsity sport.
