Hard to develop if your not playing or seeing limited playing time. Also hard to win if you have to use players who are not ready to play.
Why do you think he'll see limited playing time? One thing we have found is that they can have the opportunity to play right away. Coach Appert doesn't give deference to the juniors and seniors. As much as he believes they are the ones that help you to win games, everyone's requirements to earn ice time are equal, and of course that can go either way for any player.

Not RPI history. I think that we got Brutlag and Polacek, among others, similarly, and I don't think that any of regret that.

Ralph, your trying to compare apples to oranges, or even a cucumber

Most forwards develop earlier than a defenseman or goalie. Coaches can also do a lot to hide a young, developing forward with his pairings, both forward and defenseman. Comparing how a forward made the transition (high school to college) to a defenseman is like comparing a fruit to a veg.

Brutlag was also a very different defensemen than Reno as he was a much better skater, quicker and more skilled. He was more ready to adjust to the speed/quickness of the college game.

Every player is different from every other. What about Jeff Foss then? There have been many cases where we have gotten true freshmen whom I think other schools wanted but not as true freshmen.

I watched several of Reno's games this year and watched Brut for four years in Troy. Reno is every bit the skater that Brutlag was. Reno showed poise and decision making beyond his years. He was a finalist for Mr. Hockey for crissakes, add that into the very sound D system that Coach Vines has the boys running -- which to a man LOVE IT -- I think he'll be just fine.

Yes, ever player is different in some form or another. But Brutlag ability to skate is what allowed him to make high school to college transition a lot easier.

Now Foss was/is similar type player to Reno and certainly a better comparison than Brutalg. I remember watching some of his high school games and he seem to be a little more offensive than Reno. He also had the advantage of some time in the USHL (grant it, very little as an after), but certainly more than Reno.

Seriously Ralph, unless RPI see's Reno as a top 4 defensemen next year (maybe even a 5), he and RPI would be much better off playing a year of juniors. And if he is that far up on the depth chart, well, this may say something about the quality/depth of the d-core next year.

Very, very few colleges will bring in "true freshman" defensemen directly from high school and have them play higher than a 7-8 guy. Once in a while you'll see a highly skilled/offensive power play type guy (who's role is somewhat limited) being used more as a specialist. Forwards are different story

We'll see what happens to him. I don't expect him to start out as a top-4 defenseman, but I expect him to be such, perhaps even top 2, by his soph year. Yes, he could benefit from a year in juniors, but I expect him to contribute his first year just the same.

They are different kinds of players. I agree with thetruthhurts on that. Reno indeed has a lot of poise, but he isn't as good a skater as Brutlag.

some changes (or reversals) coming to NCAA approved recruiting regulations...... http://www.collegehockeynews.com/new...s_previous.php ....... I find the last 2 paragraphs interesting. Clik on Heisenbergs site (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...jMi1PS2c&gid=1 and check out the amount of commits 2015 & 16 particularly with Yale. Just pointing out a correlation from the story.
Brandon Pirri: Turk would give it to Jagr. That's awesome! Jagr's untouchable. And he would give it to Jagr.

Interesting indeed...hence the inherent weakness in the system where some schools/leagues use LOI and some not. Funny that milk toast Ivy League coaches struggle with the definition of "gentleman".
