    #60 - 1998-1999 Maine Black Bears vs. #69 - 1977-1978 Denver Pioneers
    February 27, 2013
    Joe Louis Arena

    Game Update Post

    Starting Goalies:
    Denver Goalie - Ernie Glanville
    Maine Goalie - Alfie Michaud

Both teams are on the ice for warmups. Denver is sporting their dark Boone outline jerseys, while Maine is wearing their classic white. It's an electric atmosphere at the Joe, as the puck is set to drop in approximately 30 minutes.

Introductions are underway, and the 1990-1991 Northern Michigan Wildcats are now in attendance. NMU will square off against the winner of this matchup.

Today's national anthem will be sung by rising star Lou Bega...

That was amazing. Now let's count the starting skaters...1, 2, 3 4 5...yep, they're all there. Puck set to drop shortly...

    1st Period:
    - Puck has dropped and we're underway. Maine going from Right to Left...
    - Doug Berry Scores!! Mark Davidson lets a soft shot go from the top of the near circle, and Michaud stops it, but leaves a juicy rebound, and Berry taps it in. 1-0 DU
    - That was just 19 seconds into the first...not a good start for the Black Bears.
    - Maine comes back with some pressure, but Glanville up to the task. 17:00 left in the 1st. 1-0 DU
    - Denver will head to the powerplay. Berry comes flying into the zone, and Robert Ek slashes Berry's stick out of his hands. 15:05 left in the 1st.
    - Maine with a great PK, and keeps this one within a goal. Under 13:00 Left in the 1st.
    - Dan Kerluke Scores!! Peter Metcalf springs Kerluke up the boards for a breakaway. Kerluke comes in and goes 5 hole for the goal. 1-1
    - A lot of back and forth in the neutral zone right now. Just under 9:00 left in the 1st.
    - Maine to go to the powerplay. Steve Kariya had the puck near the blue line up against the near boards, and he is drilled by Gary Nedelak...this could be a 5...
    - Yep. 5 minute major for checking from behind and a game misconduct. Coach Johnston wants an explanation...
    - Kariya appears to be okay, but he's getting looked at by the team doctor. Maine's 5:00 powerplay now underway...Just under 8:00 left in the 1st.
    - Peter Metcalf hits the post!! Maine with a ton of possession, and they move the puck to Metcalf at the point who rips one off the crossbar and out of play
    - Steve Kariya Scores!! Off the bench and on the powerplay, Kariya takes a feed from Cory Larose at the end line, comes out to the bottom of the far circle, and roofs it over Glanville. Maine up 2-1 with 4:30 left in the 1st. 1:49 left on the major.
    - Denver kills the rest of the penalty. Maine still putting on pressure though late in the first.
    - That's the end of the 1st. Maine up 2-1.
    - Shots on Goal: Maine - 12, Denver - 9

    2nd Period
    - Puck has dropped for the 2nd period. Maine with a 2-1 advantage.
    - Denver with strong puck possession in the Maine zone to start the second, but nothing to show for it. 18:00 left in the 2nd.
    - Maine's Kariya with a great chance on a 3x2, taking a drop pass from Larose, but Kariya fires it high over Glanville. Under 17 to play in the 2nd.
    - And Maine will head back to the powerplay, as Vince Magnan gets called for Roughing. 16:19 left in the 2nd. 2-1 Maine
    - Denver with a strong PK. Maine had very little possession in the offensive zone, and Denver kills off the penalty
    - Now Maine back to the powerplay again, this time thanks to Paul Messier's Interference penalty in the neutral zone. Just over 12:00 left in the 2nd
    - Once again, Denver kills it off. With Just over 10:00 left in the 2nd, we're still at 2-1 Maine.
    - Oh my...another penalty on Denver. This time, Vince Magnan gets called for Holding. Coach Johnston is livid. Maine back to the powerplay...
    - Denver with another tremendous penalty kill. That group is keeping the Pioneers in the game. Just over 6 minutes left in the 2nd. 2-1 Maine.
    - Denver with the momentum after the successive PKs. Doug Berry nearly tied this up at 2 with a wrister from the near circle, but it goes just wide.
    - Perry Schnarr scores!! Moments after Berry's shot went wide, Schnarr picked the puck up along the far boards, and ripped a slapper that found its way past Michaud. 2-2 game!
    - Maine was generating a lot of pressuring following the DU goal, but Barrett Heisten takes a penalty after the whistle, and now DU will be on the powerplay. Just under 2:00 left in the 2nd.
    - Denver unable to mount any significant scoring chances despite a ton of time in the offensive zone. The Period ends with 3 seconds of powerplay still on the clock. 2-2 after 2
    - Shots on Goal in the 2nd: Maine - 13 (25 Total), Denver - 8 (17 Total)

    3rd Period:
    - Puck has dropped, and the third period is underway...
    - Kariya with a great opportunity early, as he comes in straight up the middle, and lets a wrister in the slot, but Glanville makes a great glove save. 19:00 left in the 3rd.
    - Jim Leger Scores!! Denver gets caught pinching in, and a bouncing puck leads to a Leger breakaway. Leger shelves one over Glanville, and Maine regains the lead. 3-2 Maine.
    - Denver is cycling the puck very well, but they haven't been able to capitalize that with scoring chances as of yet. We're under 13:00 left to play in the 3rd.
    - Doug Berry hits the post!! Denver works the puck below the end line, and a beautiful backhand pass to the crease finds Berry's stick, who slides the puck past Michaud, but off the far post. 12:00 left in the 3rd.
    - Craig Roehl Scores!! Denver continues their pressure, and Roehl lets a long wrister go from the top of the near circles. It deflects off a Maine defender and past Michaud, and we're back to a tie game. 3-3!
    - What a save by Glanville! Heisten lets a slapper fly that appears to be going in top shelf, but Glanville fully extends and gets a glove on it. What a beauty. 8:00 left in the 3rd.
    - Denver to the powerplay after Brendan Walsh took an ill-advised roughing penalty in the offensive zone as Maine was mounting pressure. 6:44 left in the 3rd.
    - Denver once again with a lot of pressure with the man advantage, but nothing to show for it yet...about a minute left in the powerplay
    - Steve Kariya Scores!! Kariya pokes the puck past the pinching defensemen, leaving just the puck and Kariya on a break. Kariya races down the far boards, then makes a beautiful forehand to backhand back to the forehand move that sends Glanville sailing across the crease, and Kariya slides the puck home into the empty net for a shorthanded goal. Maine up 4-3 with just over 5:00 left to play, and 15 seconds of DU Powerplay left.
    - Denver powerplay over, but the Pioneers still mounting pressure in the offensive zone.
    - Michaud Robs Mark Falcone!! Denver continued to cycle the puck, and Falcone broke free in the corner, wrapped around the circle to the slot, and ripped a wrister aimed for the top shelf, but Michaud gets his blocker over just in time to deflect the puck out of play. 2:10 left in the 3rd. 4-3 Maine.
    - The Pioneers pull Glanville. Just under 90 seconds left on the clock, and Denver is dominating possession. Maine trying to hold on...
    - Michaud holds on to a long wrister from the blue line, and Denver calls their timeout. 1:05 left in the 3rd. 4-3 Maine
    - Icing on Maine with :57 left, as Maine wins the draw, and launches it down the ice. It goes just wide of the gaping Denver net.
    - Maine calls their timeout.
    - Denver draws a penalty!! With just :49 left, following the DU draw, Doug Berry is hauled down in front of the Maine net by Barrett Heisten, who gets called for Interference. Denver skating 6x4!
    - Doug Berry Hits the Post!! With the clock ticking down, Bob Pazelli launches a slap shot that Michaud saves, but the rebound goes right to Berry in the slot who fires a wrister off the crossbar and into the crowd. :11 left in the 3rd
    - That's the Game!! Maine holds on to win 4-3. Denver with a great opportunity at the buzzer, but Berry's slapshot from just outside the far circle clips Michaud's glove and over the net, and the Black Bears are moving on to the Round of 64!
