        #63 - 2004-2005 Boston College Eagles vs. #66 - 2006-2007 Notre Dame Fighting Irish
        February 23, 2013
        Madison Square Garden

        Game Update Post

        Boston College Goalie: Matti Kaltiainen
        Notre Dame Goalie: David Brown

National Anthem is about to begin, as most of the BC and Notre Dame contingent are packed inside Madison Square Garden. Singing our nation's anthem is the hit new artist - Howie Day

That was a great rendition of the national anthem, now the crowd gets ready for the Eagles and Irish to collide...

        1st Period:
        - Puck has dropped and we're underway. Notre Dame is in their traditional blue with gold helmets, and the Eagles are wearing white. BC going from left to right
        - Joe Rooney Scores!! On the Eagles' first shot of the game, Brown is screened, and Rooney's wrister from the top of the circle goes in, and it's 1-0 Boston College.
        - Brown forced to make a big save early, as Brian Boyle fires a wrister from the slot, but Brown gets his glove up in time to keep this 1-0. 17:00 left in the 1st.
        - Notre Dame looks slow early on here. BC has had nearly all the possession, and it has been almost exclusively in the Notre Dame zone.
        - Peter Harrold with a great look from the blue line, but Brown once again is able to make a stop through traffic. 13:30 left in the 1st.
        - Notre Dame with their first flurry, but Matti is up to the task, stoning Ryan Thang on a wraparound attempt. 12:00 left in the 1st.
        - Now the Eagles will head to the powerplay. Noah Babin gets called for slashing on Brian Boyle, as Boyle was coming into the Irish zone. 10:20 left in the 1st.
        - Boyle nearly makes the Irish pay, but Brown up to the task. Just under 10 left in the 1st period.
        - And now BC takes a penalty, as Peter Harrold gets called for tripping. 9:38 left in the 1st, and we'll have 1:18 of 4x4, followed by :42 of Irish Powerplay
        - Kevin Deeth hits the post!! Skating 4x4, Deeth made a great individual effort to get around Mike Brennan, beats Matti, but then hits the crossbar. 1-0 BC.
        - Babin gets out of the box, and the Irish had a short powerplay, but were unable to get much going in the offensive zone. Back to 5x5.
        - The Irish are flying right now, and have all the momentum, but unable to solve Matti. 6:30 left in the 1st.
        - Now Notre Dame will head back to the Powerplay, as Thang gets hauled down by Brennan, who gets called for holding. 5:30 left in the 1st.
        - Great penalty kill by the Eagles, and Brennan is out of the box. Still 1-0 Boston College with 3:30 left in the 1st.
        - Tension growing on the ice, as Peter Harrold and Tom Sawatske each draw Roughing minors after the whistle. We'll skate 4x4 for the next 2 minutes.
        - Erik Condra with a laser off the post!! Condra gets a beautiful feed from Wes O'Neill up the boards, makes a move to the slot, and fires one off the post.
        - We're under a minute left in the period, and the matching minors are over, both teams at full strength.
        - That's the end of 1, and the BC Eagles hold a 1-0 lead over Notre Dame
        - Both teams with 10 shots on goal in the period.

        2nd Period:
        - Puck has dropped for the 2nd period, and we're underway. BC up 1-0.
        - A lot of back and forth in the neutral zone right now...neither team wanting to give anything up. 16:00 let in the 2nd.
        - And the Irish will head back to the Powerplay. Stephen Gionta brings down Deeth as he tried to enter the Eagle zone, and Gionta will sit for 2 minutes.
        - The Irish are buzzing on the powerplay, but Matti is keeping them off the board. Several solid chances for Notre Dame.
        - Ryan Thang Scores!! Wes O'Neill makes a pass across to Deeth who fires it on Matti. The puck trickles behind him, and Thang jams it home and we're tied at 1.
        - Notre Dame is all over BC now. BC back on their heels, but Matti is coming up when he needs to in order to keep this all square at 1.
        - Thang hits the post!! That makes three iron shots for the Irish today. All Notre Dame right now. 12:00 Left in the 2nd.
        - Notre Dame draws another penalty, as Taylor Leahy gets 2 minutes for boarding. 9:23 left in the 2nd.
        - Beautiful PK by BC, as Notre Dame barely touched the puck in the offensive zone. Just over 7:00 left in the 2nd. 1-1
        - And we're back to the neutral zone! Neither team giving up much of anything right now. Under 5:00 left in the 2nd.
        - Yawn...neither team giving anything up. A few long shots from the blue line by each side, but both Brown and Matti were up to the task. Under 2 left in the 2nd.
        - That's the end of 2. Boston College and Notre Dame tied at 1.
        - Shots in that period favored Notre Dame 8-6. Irish have 18 SOG through 2 periods, Eagles have 16.

        3rd Period:
        - The Puck has dropped to start the third period.
        - More of the same defensive play from both sides. Neither team willing to give up anything. 16:00 left in the 3rd.
        - Both sides get into a skirmish following a BC icing, and we have matching minors on Andrew Alberts and Kyle Lawson for Roughing. We'll skate 4x4 for 2 minutes.
        - 4x4 seems to have opened this one up a bit. Notre Dame with a very nice chance from Condra, then BC with a nice chance from Boyle. Still 1-1 with 13:00 left in the 3rd
        - Patrick Eaves scores!! Peter Harrold springs a 2x1 with a pass up the ice to Ryan Shannon. Shannon makes the dish across to Eaves who buries it to give BC a 2-1 lead.
        - Matching minors are over, and the intensity on the ice has risen thanks to the goal. Both teams flying right now.
        - Ryan Thang nearly evens this one up, but Matti comes up with a huge save on Thang's wraparound attempt. 11:00 left in the 3rd.
        - Boyle hits the post!! Boyle drags his defender, then lets a soft backhander go from just below the circle. It fools Brown, but hits the post. Still 2-1.
        - Notre Dame's T.J. Jindra nearly ties it up, but his wrister from the dot goes just high to the gloveside. Under 10:00 left to play in the 3rd.
        - Brian Boyle Scores!! Ned Havern lets a slap shot go from the blue line, it deflects in front of Brown right to Boyle, who roofs it past the diving goalie. 3-1 Eagles.
        - Coach Jackson calls a timeout following Boyle's goal. It's 3-1 BC with 8:45 left in the 3rd.
        - Notre Dame has pulled their goalie after they get the puck into the Eagle zone...All Irish after that timeout...
        - Jason Paige hits the post!! The luck of the Irish...err, not so much. That's the fourth post for Notre Dame today. Under 7:00 left in the 3rd. Irish still with an empty net.
        - Notre Dame will head to the powerplay after Mike Brennan hauled down Ryan Thang in the crease. 6:01 to play in the third...Brown back in the net for the time being.
        - BC doing a great job on the PK, as the Irish have been unable to get past the blue line with the puck.
        - Chris Collins Scores!! Notre Dame finally manages to get the puck into the zone, and Josh Sciba lets a slap shot fly, but it's blocked and goes right to Collins who goes in on a breakaway. Collins goes forehand to backhand, deking Brown, and then Collins roofs it over the sprawled goaltender. 4-1 BC with just under 4:30 to play.
        - Notre Dame trying to mount a rally, but BC is denying them the zone. Under 2:30 left in the 3rd.
        - That's the Game! Boston College advance with a 4-1 victory over Notre Dame. Up next for BC will be the 1969-1970 Cornell Big Red in the Round of 64.
        - Both Teams with 9 shots on goal in the third. Notre Dame finished with 27 sog, while BC had 25.
        - Final Score: Boston College 4 - 1 Notre Dame

Just wasn't in the cards today. Could have gone either way though.

The next game will pit the 1977-1978 Denver Pioneers (#69) against the 1998-1999 Maine Black Bears (#60) in a Midwest Regional matchup to determine who gets to take on the 1990-1991 Northern Michigan Wildcats in the Round of 64. Puck Drop - TBD (not today)

Go ahead and pencil in Denver. The only Maine team that is winning is the 92-93 team, and they'll probably be out in the Sweet 16.

It should be a good match. You have the '99 National Champions against a team that could very well have won the National Championship had they been allowed to play in the NCAA Tournament.

That being said, I like Maine's chances when their '94-'95 squad takes on the '98-'99 Michigan State team. They also have a few other small favorites that could advance to the round of 64.

As for the '92-'93 team...They are the huge favorites in this thing, thanks in part to their significant advantage from the formula. That's not to say that they can't be beat, but Fake Vegas has them as a 2-1 favorite coming into this tournament.

                      Game Update Post

                      Starting Goalies:
                      Denver Goalie - Ernie Glanville
                      Maine Goalie - Alfie Michaud

Both teams are on the ice for warmups. Denver is sporting their dark Boone outline jerseys, while Maine is wearing their classic white. It's an electric atmosphere at the Joe, as the puck is set to drop in approximately 30 minutes.

Introductions are underway, and the 1990-1991 Northern Michigan Wildcats are now in attendance. NMU will square off against the winner of this matchup.

Today's national anthem will be sung by rising star Lou Bega...

That was amazing. Now let's count the starting skaters...1, 2, 3 4 5...yep, they're all there. Puck set to drop shortly...

                      1st Period:

                      - Doug Berry Scores!! Mark Davidson lets a soft shot go from the top of the near circle, and Michaud stops it, but leaves a juicy rebound, and Berry taps it in. 1-0 DU
                      - That was just 19 seconds into the first...not a good start for the Black Bears.
                      - Maine comes back with some pressure, but Glanville up to the task. 17:00 left in the 1st. 1-0 DU
                      - Denver will head to the powerplay. Berry comes flying into the zone, and Robert Ek slashes Berry's stick out of his hands. 15:05 left in the 1st.

                      - Maine to go to the powerplay. Steve Kariya had the puck near the blue line up against the near boards, and he is drilled by Gary Nedelak...this could be a 5...
                      - Yep. 5 minute major for checking from behind and a game misconduct. Coach Johnston wants an explanation...
                      - Kariya appears to be okay, but he's getting looked at by the team doctor. Maine's 5:00 powerplay now underway...Just under 8:00 left in the 1st.
                      - Peter Metcalf hits the post!! Maine with a ton of possession, and they move the puck to Metcalf at the point who rips one off the crossbar and out of play
                      - Steve Kariya Scores!! Off the bench and on the powerplay, Kariya takes a feed from Cory Larose at the end line, comes out to the bottom of the far circle, and roofs it over Glanville. Maine up 2-1 with 4:30 left in the 1st. 1:49 left on the major.
                      - Denver kills the rest of the penalty. Maine still putting on pressure though late in the first.

                      - Maine's Kariya with a great chance on a 3x2, taking a drop pass from Larose, but Kariya fires it high over Glanville. Under 17 to play in the 2nd.
                      - And Maine will head back to the powerplay, as Vince Magnan gets called for Roughing. 16:19 left in the 2nd. 2-1 Maine
                      - Denver with a strong PK. Maine had very little possession in the offensive zone, and Denver kills off the penalty
                      - Now Maine back to the powerplay again, this time thanks to Paul Messier's Interference penalty in the neutral zone. Just over 12:00 left in the 2nd
                      - Once again, Denver kills it off. With Just over 10:00 left in the 2nd, we're still at 2-1 Maine.
                      - Oh my...another penalty on Denver. This time, Vince Magnan gets called for Holding. Coach Johnston is livid. Maine back to the powerplay...
                      - Denver with another tremendous penalty kill. That group is keeping the Pioneers in the game. Just over 6 minutes left in the 2nd. 2-1 Maine.
                      - Denver with the momentum after the successive PKs. Doug Berry nearly tied this up at 2 with a wrister from the near circle, but it goes just wide.
                      - Perry Schnarr scores!! Moments after Berry's shot went wide, Schnarr picked the puck up along the far boards, and ripped a slapper that found its way past Michaud. 2-2 game!
                      - Maine was generating a lot of pressuring following the DU goal, but Barrett Heisten takes a penalty after the whistle, and now DU will be on the powerplay. Just under 2:00 left in the 2nd.
                      - Denver unable to mount any significant scoring chances despite a ton of time in the offensive zone. The Period ends with 3 seconds of powerplay still on the clock. 2-2 after 2

                      3rd Period:
                      - Puck has dropped, and the third period is underway...
                      - Kariya with a great opportunity early, as he comes in straight up the middle, and lets a wrister in the slot, but Glanville makes a great glove save. 19:00 left in the 3rd.
                      - Jim Leger Scores!! Denver gets caught pinching in, and a bouncing puck leads to a Leger breakaway. Leger shelves one over Glanville, and Maine regains the lead. 3-2 Maine.
                      - Denver is cycling the puck very well, but they haven't been able to capitalize that with scoring chances as of yet. We're under 13:00 left to play in the 3rd.
                      - Doug Berry hits the post!! Denver works the puck below the end line, and a beautiful backhand pass to the crease finds Berry's stick, who slides the puck past Michaud, but off the far post. 12:00 left in the 3rd.
                      - Craig Roehl Scores!! Denver continues their pressure, and Roehl lets a long wrister go from the top of the near circles. It deflects off a Maine defender and past Michaud, and we're back to a tie game. 3-3!
                      - What a save by Glanville! Heisten lets a slapper fly that appears to be going in top shelf, but Glanville fully extends and gets a glove on it. What a beauty. 8:00 left in the 3rd.
                      - Denver to the powerplay after Brendan Walsh took an ill-advised roughing penalty in the offensive zone as Maine was mounting pressure. 6:44 left in the 3rd.
                      - Denver once again with a lot of pressure with the man advantage, but nothing to show for it yet...about a minute left in the powerplay
                      - Steve Kariya Scores!! Kariya pokes the puck past the pinching defensemen, leaving just the puck and Kariya on a break. Kariya races down the far boards, then makes a beautiful forehand to backhand back to the forehand move that sends Glanville sailing across the crease, and Kariya slides the puck home into the empty net for a shorthanded goal. Maine up 4-3 with just over 5:00 left to play, and 15 seconds of DU Powerplay left.
                      - Denver powerplay over, but the Pioneers still mounting pressure in the offensive zone.
                      - Michaud Robs Mark Falcone!! Denver continued to cycle the puck, and Falcone broke free in the corner, wrapped around the circle to the slot, and ripped a wrister aimed for the top shelf, but Michaud gets his blocker over just in time to deflect the puck out of play. 2:10 left in the 3rd. 4-3 Maine.

I thought about adding another minor, but...I figured I better just leave what the sim says. It would be too tempting later on in the tournament.

The game reviews are excellent BTW. The only thing that's a little hard to believe are the number of posts that the players hit during each game.

So, what is the next game and when will it be played?
