Thanks for posting that.

Just curious how you decided who is on the ice together. John Carter and George Servinis both played the same wing and would rarely be on the ice together except on power plays when Carter was on the point.

In the first goal, RPI had just finished a powerplay I believe. That being said, the simulator doesn't really factor in line combinations when it spits out the data. For example, I'll get something along the lines of:

Play 90: Shot on Goal
Result - Goal - Rensselaer (4)
Scorer - Servinis
Assists - Carter, Oates
On Ice - Hammond, Friday, Puppa

I then have to take that and put it in the form of a narrative. For example if I have the following:

Play 19: Shot Attempt
Result - Wide - Rensselaer (2)
Shooter - Sadeghpour
On Ice - Mansi, Butryn, Robinson, Prendergast, Puppa
On Ice - Gryp, Dolloff, Thornton, Brown, Jordan, Brady

I could turn that into - Sadeghpour hits the post! Just past the midway point in the first period, Robinson makes a tremendous play along his own blueline, crushing Gryp as he tried to enter the Engineer zone. Prendergast gathered the puck behind his own net and found Butryn along the near boards who skated the puck into the Terrier zone. Butryn then found Sadeghpour flying along the far boards and hit him with a beautiful tape to tape pass. Sadeghpour lifted a wrister that beat Brady glove side, but rang off the post and flew wide.

Or, I could just ignore it and go to the next data point that I have.

Hopefully that makes a bit more sense.

Thanks, FS23. The simulator gives more info than I had thought. I guess it would be hard to find out what line combos were used especially for older teams, although which wing players were usually on is often known.

It's an early start in Denver today, as the puck is set to drop at Noon (Eastern). Looks like we have a Hockey East crew working the game as well.

The crowd has piled into the Pepsi Center, and they nearly blew the lid off this place when Patsy Cline and Roy Orbison came out to sing the National Anthem. It was a beautiful performance, but now we're ready for some hockey. Puck is about to drop, and I'll be back after the first period to give an update.

FIRST PERIOD:
Plenty of up and down action as these two squads are fighting for supremacy in the Mile High City. Denver struck first about midway through on a powerplay goal by Jerry Walker, his sixth of this tournament. The lead was short lived as Harvard came back with a goal by C.J. Young to knot the proceedings at 1-1. That is where we are after 20 minutes of play. Harvard outshooting Denver 11-10 in the first.

SECOND PERIOD:
What a dominating performance by the Pioneers. Denver jumped out early in the second with a Marshall Johnston goal just over a minute in. The Pioneers continued their strong play, and about midway through the game Marty Howe lit the lamp for DU to give them a 3-1 lead. They wouldn't stop there as Bill Masterton converted an opportunity late in the second period, and after forty minutes of play, Denver is up 4-1. DU outshot Harvard 14-7 in the period, and are now outshooting the Crimson 24-18 through two periods of play. I'll be back after the third to give the full recap!

THIRD PERIOD:
What a finish! Harvard stormed back with two quick goals early and tried desperately for the equalizer. Would they get it? Click on the link below to find out...

Also playing today:
#51 1998-1999 North Dakota vs. #19 1995-1996 Michigan
- The Sioux and Wolverines are knotted up at 1 each midway through the second period. Both sides are flying up and down the ice looking for the go ahead goal!
- Michigan took a brief lead early in the third, but North Dakota rallied to tie the game at 2 apiece. That is where the score stood at the end of regulation, so we're headed to OT!
- North Dakota nearly advances early in the second period of OT, but Marty Turco absolutely robs Jay Panzer, who was in on a clean break. What a game!
- Michigan's Brendan Morrison ends this one early in the third extra session to send the Wolverines on to the Sweet 16.

Yeah...that '86 squad probably should have won it all as well, especially considering they were up in the 3rd.

Of course, the '89 squad would have lost to Minnesota had Skarda's shot gone in instead of hitting the pipe.

But, as the saying goes, if ifs and butts were candy and nuts...we'd all have diabetes.

I have no complaints about the interval between games and rounds. The players are much older now, they can use the rest.

Of course, the '89 squad would have lost to Minnesota had Skarda's shot gone in instead of hitting the pipe.

Considering that '89 final was played in St Paul - it makes Harvard's victory even more impressive.
