I guess Cornell 1970 was just Dan Lodboa - their only All American. That Dryden kid didn't even get an honorable mention!

The following games have finished up...

#31 - 1996-1997 North Dakota Fighting Sioux vs. #95 - 1965-1966 Clarkson Golden Knights

North Dakota and Clarkson squared off in the East Regional Round of 64 matchup, and the game was back and forth the whole way through. Clarkson jumped out to an early lead just 19 seconds into the opening frame when Fred Silver lit the lamp. North Dakota responded with two quick goals towards the end of the period, and the Sioux led 2-1 after twenty minutes. Clarkson jumped back early in the second, tying the game. The Golden Knights then took the lead with just seconds left in the middle frame to take a 3-2 lead after two periods of play. However, it would be North Dakota that would dominate the third, led by Jason Blake, who scored twice and tallied an assist in the final stanza, and the Sioux advanced to the Round of 32 with a 5-3 victory.


#15 - 1966-1967 Cornell Big Red vs. #50 - 1982-1983 Minnesota Golden Gophers

Ned Harkness' Big Red squared off against Brad Buetow's Golden Gophers in this Round of 64 matchup, and it was a thriller. The opening period saw both teams flying up and down the ice trying to get the first tally, but Ken Dryden and Frank Pietrangelo proved impenetrable in the first twenty minutes of action. It looked as though the second period might be a replay of the first, but Jeff Larson finally solved the stalemate, scoring with just under three minutes to go to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead. The Gophers added to that lead early in the third when Scott Bjugstad's slapper from the near circle deflected off a Big Red defender in front and Dryden had no chance. While Cornell made a valiant comeback attempt, and drew within a goal with just over two minutes to play, Minnesota sealed the deal with an empty netter with just seconds remaining. The Golden Gophers advance to the Round of 32 with a 3-1 victory.


#7 - 1976-1977 Wisconsin Badgers vs. #71 - 1988-1989 Minnesota Golden Gophers

Longtime rivals Wisconsin and Minnesota squared off with a spot in the East Regional Round of 32 on the line. The Gophers got the scoring underway when Larry Olimb scored just four minutes after the opening puck drop. Wisconsin answered quickly, as John Taft's slapshot ripped into the net on a Badger powerplay, and the game was all square. The see-saw action continued when the Gopher scored with just over a minute to play in the opening frame, and after twenty minutes, Minnesota led 2-1. The back and forth continued in the second, as the teams traded goals, and heading into the third, Minnesota held a slip 4-3 advantage. It looked like the Gophers might run away with it when Tom Chorske scored midway through the period to give Minnesota a 5-3 advantage, but the Badgers rallied in the final minutes, scoring twice with an extra attacker, including Mark Johnson's buzzer beater with just 3 seconds to go to knot the score at 5 apiece. The first overtime proved fruitless, but Wisconsin finally prevailed in the second overtime, scoring the game winner just two minutes into the extra frame. With the goal, the Badgers advance to the Round of 32 with a 6-5 double OT victory over Minnesota.


#10 - 1997-1998 Michigan State Spartans vs. #74 - 2009-2010 Miami RedHawks

Two former CCHA foes squared off in this Round of 64 contest. The Spartans struck first on Mike York's bomb from the point that fooled Cody Reichard, and Michigan State took a 1-0 lead midway through the first frame. MSU added to the lead early in the second with a goal from Shawn Horcoff, and as time dwindled down in the middle frame, the Spartans led 2-0. The RedHawks finally got on the board late in the second when Tommy Wingels found just enough room between Chad Alban's pads to pull Miami within a goal. It would be as close as Miami would get, as the Spartans scored twice more in the final frame, winning the game 4-1 to advance to the Round of 32.


#23 - 1979-1980 North Dakota Fighting Sioux vs. #42 - 2005-2006 Wisconsin Badgers

An epic rivalry was renewed in this Round of 64 matchup, as the Sioux and Badgers fought to see who would advance in this tournament. The first period was a goaltending exhibition, as Brian Elliott and Bob Iwabuchi held strong, and after twenty minutes of play, the score remained 0-0. That changed early in the second when Joe Pavelski scored for the Badgers to give Wisconsin a 1-0 lead. The Sioux stormed back, and midway through the game Cary Eades scored to square the score at 1 apiece. The Sioux then took the lead with just moments left in the period on Doug Smail's beautiful wrister from the slot that beat Elliott. Through two periods, North Dakota held a 2-1 advantage. That lead would disappear quickly in the third following a major penalty on the Sioux, and Wisconsin scored twice on the ensuing powerplay to take a 3-2 advantage. North Dakota tried desperately to get the score knotted, but when the puck slid into their empty net with just 27 seconds to play, it would be Wisconsin that would celebrate in this one, winning 4-2 to advance to the Round of 32.


#19 - 1995-1996 Michigan Wolverines vs. #46 - 1996-1997 Michigan Wolverines

Arguably the most intriguing matchup in the Round of 64, almost two identical Michigan squads met to see which would advance to the Round of 32. The '97 Wolverines struck quickly, scoring twice in the matter of 39 seconds early in the first to take a 2-0 lead. The '96 Wolverines bounced back strong though, and got back within a goal towards the end of the period. '96 Michigan then tied things up early in the second on Brendan Morrison's beautiful wraparound that beat Marty Turco. However, it would be '97 Morrison that beat '96 Turco moments later, and the '97 Wolverines regained the one goal advantage. That would be the score after forty minutes, as the '97 Wolverines led 3-2. The '97 Wolverines scored again early in the third to take a two goal lead, but the '96 Wolverines showed the heart of a champion midway through the period, scoring three goals in quick succession to stun the '97 Wolverines, who now trailed 5-4. But with '97 Turco pulled, the '97 Wolverines managed to sneak a puck by '96 Turco, thanks to '97 John Madden's quick hands on a rebound. The goal meant overtime, but it would not take long. Just over a minute into the extra frame, '96 Brendan Morrison lit the lamp on a beautiful wrist shot from the bottom of the near circle. The '96 Wolverines advanced to the Round of 32 with a 6-5 OT victory, which led some of the '97 Wolverines left to lament that sometimes the best team just doesn't win.


#6 - 2008-2009 Boston University Terriers vs. #59 - 1987-1988 Maine Black Bears

The Hockey East Rivals met in the West Regional Round of 64 matchup, and it would be BU that would dominate. Colin Wilson scored three times, and added an assist, as the Terriers stormed the Black Bears in the first period, taking a commanding 3-1 lead after twenty minutes. BU added to that in the second with two more goals, and while Maine made it interesting with two third period goals, the Terrier faithful never really had to worry, as Jack Parker's squad cruised into the Round of 32 with a 5-3 victory.

Three games are in the process of being simulated, and I will have their results and brief recaps later today...

And the final games of the Round of 64...

#27 - 2007-2008 Michigan Wolverines vs. #38 - 2002-2003 Colorado College Tigers

The Wolverines and the Tigers squared off in a tremendous match for a spot in the West Regional's Round of 32. Kevin Porter got things started with a beautiful goal midway through the first period to put Michigan up 1-0. However, the lead would not last long as the Tigers stormed in front with two goals within 87 seconds to take a 2-1 lead after the first. CC continued their strong play early in the second, and Peter Sejna scored a beauty to put the Tigers up 3-1. Red Berenson then made a goaltending change, swapping Bryan Hogan in for Billy Sauer. The move energized the Wolverines, and Michigan pulled back within a goal with just moments left in the second. Michigan's momentum continued early in the third, and by the midway point of the third, the Wolverines scored two more times to take a 4-3 lead. With the clock winding down, the Tigers made a ferocious push, and Joe Cullen's blast from the point with just over two minutes to play knotted the game at 4. The game went into overtime, and each side pushed for the game winner, but through twenty extra minutes, the game still was tied at 4. Finally, 9 minutes into the second extra frame, Colin Stuart lit the lamp to give the Tigers a 5-4 double OT victory, and secure CC a spot in the Round of 32.


#11 - 1977-1978 Boston University Terriers vs. #75 - 1978-1979 Minnesota Golden Gophers

Two squads littered with members of the Miracle on Ice team took to the ice to see who would advance to the Round of 32. Jim Craig made several great saves to keep the Gophers off the board, but Bill Baker's howitzer from the point finally proved too much for Craig to handle, and Minnesota jumped out to a 1-0 advantage. The Terriers came right back with a Dave Silk goal, and after twenty minutes of play, BU and Minnesota were all square at 1. The second period proved pivotal, as the Terriers continued where they left off in the first, and Minnesota had no answer. BU scored three goals within a four minutes span midway through the second frame to take control of the game 4-1. Minnesota managed a goal with just over 6 minutes to play in the third, but it would be too little, too late. The BU Terriers won 4-2 to advance to the Round of 32.


#22 - 1955-1956 Michigan Wolverines vs. #86 - 1974-1975 Michigan Tech Huskies

Two Michigan schools and former WCHA rivals met in the final Round of 64 matchup. Mike Zuke got the party started with a quick goal to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Tech Goalie Jim Warden stopped the rest of the shots he saw in the first, and after twenty minutes, Michigan Tech led 1-0. The lead did not last long in the second, as the Wolverines scored twice in quick succession to grab a 2-1 lead. As the battle raged on, Michigan Tech found a second goal by Zuke to knot the score at 2, which was the score after forty minutes of hockey. The third period was full of intense action, and it looked like the game just might head into overtime. However, the Wolverines' Wally Maxwell scored on a wrister from the slot with just over four minutes to go to give Michigan a 3-2 lead. However, Michigan Tech responded with a beautiful goal from Dana Decker tie things up at 3 apiece. Once again, overtime loomed, but with just 42 seconds to play, Michigan's Mike Buchanan scored on a blast from the point, and the Wolverines held on to beat Tech 4-3 to advance to the round of 32.
