Do you remember the crowd at the Championship game? We had the UMD fans rooting for us, we had the BC fans rooting for us because most of them hated Providence, and there were a lot of Michigan State fans there because they thought the Spartans were going to be there. I'll never forget when Swarm came out on the ice waiving the MSU flag, we had their fans also. Never heard Let's Go Red said so loud in my life!
All very true. When the Bee came out the MSU fans really went crazy. We had so much support from the crowd that the noise was constant. We seemed like we were the overwhelming favorite but i was very nervous. A year before i saw what a goalie can do to shut us down (Jon Casey) and felt that Providence had the guy in net who was just so hot that he could do it also. I did not feel comfortable until George was off sides-I thought that sealed it. Not because he scored, but because it just seemed everything was with us and going right.

I thought i would never feel anything like that again. I must say though that in 1995 up in Lake Placid when Mike Tamburro played phenomenal goal to beat Colgate and we went on to face Princeton in the ECAC final-I got a bit of that feeling back again.

Edit: Have to add though that the Princeton fans up at LP that year (and there were a few) were not at all like the UMD fans of 1985. Some of them tried to get the staff at the rink to escort me out of the place because i insisted on squeezing off my air horn after each of the 5 RPI goals.

First of all, I knew once we got a 2 goal lead against Providence, we weren't going to give it up. Even though he gave up 5 goals against UMD,
Daren Puppa always played at his best when he knew it was going to be a low scoring game.

And as far as 1995 went, I didn't go to the Colgate game but drove up that morning to the title game. I remember quite a number of Princeton fans and how quiet they became in the third period when we pulled away. Didn't know about the air horn incident, but it doesn't surprise me at all. What do you expect from Ivy League fans?

During the season Colgate handled us rather easily. I did not expect to get by them to the finals. In fact we were surprised to even get to LP-we finished I believe 6th in the standings and we had to scramble to get up there for the first game. And yes-the princeton fans that were there (and there were more than i usually see at Baker Rink for some home games) were not pleasant.

I think you're right about Colgate. I think that's why I didn't go on Friday. If you remember we were the home team on Saturday because even though we were the 6th seed, Princeton was the 7th seed. Bet that was the last time that 2 teams seeded that low ended up playing for the championship.

Fridgen had the team practice faceoffs during the week and it worked since we won the majority of the face offs. Tamburro was hot!

Jenny and i wandered into the rink early that day while RPI was practicing. We had been across the street downstairs at a little bar called Cheers. I never saw the team more relaxed. I do not know why they were, or what Fridge had done to prepare them. They just had a calmness like this was no big deal. Tamburro came over and talked with us by the boards-it was like just another day in the park. And that was a very good Colgate team.

2 upsets led to that of course. Princeton was as big a surprise as we were. Who knew that would be our last ECAC championship up to now.

A classic RPI game, some moments of brilliance, other long periods of looking quite mediocre. QU had many chances to win this game, hitting the pipes two or three times. RPI with a few rare breakaway chances that weren't well taken. Merriam played very well, would be surprised to see Diebold in net tomorrow. Bokenfohr looked awful in the 1st, must have thought it was still golf season with the amount of time it took him to move the puck. He picked up a knock in the 3rd and still looked a little gimpy in the hand-shake line, will be interested to see if he plays tomorrow. A tie was a fair result for both teams.

That tape was transferred by a friend to mine to two DVDs but is missing the winning goal. The beginning of the last overtime is there. My (former) friend claims that it wasn't on the tape either.
Ralph, I'm sure you are correct that the Duluth game was not broadcast on ESPN the day of the game.

I'm not sure exactly what time the game was broadcast the next day, but I knew that I wasn't going to be able to watch it, because my wife and I had tickets, which we had gotten months in advance, to a Flyers game at the Spectrum at 1 PM Saturday afternoon and ESPN's taped broadcast of Friday night's game was going to be in progress at that time.

As it happened, Friday night's game ended just in time for the Philadelphia Inquirer to squeeze a brief recap of Friday night's game into its Saturday morning edition. I recall that the box score indicated, erroneously, that the winning goal had been scored by Mark Jooris. Carter's winning shot went in off a UM-D defenseman's stick, but apparently at the time the Inquirer's article went to press, there was still confusion as to exactly whose stick the puck had gone off of.

Packing up the car for a road trip to PU! Hope the men make it worth the trip and that this Hobey Baker barn is as nice as everyone talks about it.

Nice is not a word i would use to describe it-historic, quaint, different, small, cramped, frigid, loud-now those are words i would use. Just one of those places any long time fan of college hockey needs to get to at least once. There is no question we would always rather be at HFH than any other rink-there is no place like home.

Dr. D is right - I've been to Hobey Baker once, my freshman year (2010-2011) with the band, and the nice thing was that the arena was chock full of RPI fans, and combined with the band being there even Coach told us after that it felt like a home game. That's always the best thing to hear as a band member traveling with the team. It certainly is cold there, though. We also didn't have great seats to actually see a lot of the rink, we were up on that balcony with the Princeton band.

I guess we watched different games then. I saw an RPI team which for **** near all of the game had an outstanding forecheck, rolled 3 lines that were hard to play against, blocked a ton of shots (Q announcers said this repeatedly) and a goaltender, as you noted, who made all of the saves he should have and a few that he flat out stole. The number of shorty and odd man bids we generated in and of itself was impressive and a change for the better for RPI, lest we forget, we're usually on the other end of those scenarios. You also failed to mention that RPI also hit at least 2 pipes, including Bubela late in the 3rd which could've won it. All of this done against a red-hot team.

Knocking a freshman D skating in what, his 5th career D1 game against a top team? Weak. Perspective... try some.
